Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

You are a coward and a horrible friend. You've watched Emma treat others like shit for years. She will do it to you eventually. I wouldnt have a falling out with her but I would distance myself. Fade her out.

What gives Emma the right to kick anyone out of the WhatsApp group? The other mums have obviously noticed and are probably as afraid of Emma as you are. Which is why no one spoke up. You all sound like a bunch of teenage b*tches. I hate bully's.

bunnypenny · 14/07/2026 22:38

You sound like a twat. An utter utter twat. You should be ashamed of yourself, hiding behind “oh but I just don’t like confrontation tinkly laugh”.

you’re an awful friend and I would say you’re a terrible judge of character, but you know exactly what Emma (and her husband) are like, you are just too much of a dick to care.

shame on you OP.

GardenCovent · 14/07/2026 22:38

You and your DH sound very immature and a bit pathetic to be honest.
I can’t imagine being scared to confront a grown adult over awful behaviour.
You carry on being a bit of a drip and wait for Emma to turn on you and when it does happen I hope Anna is there watching on

Jesus I can’t believe people are being so harsh. I’ve tried to be supportive without actually taking a side. This isn’t primary school, I shouldn’t have to take a side. And it’s not easy. We all have stress in our lives and I don’t need any more. You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me.

But you have taken a side. You’re getting harsh responses because you’ve chosen the mean girls

ThatWhiteElephant · 14/07/2026 22:40

Emma and her dh sound delightful, I can’t think why you’d want to be friends with them tbh.

Grow a backbone and be kind to Anna, apologise for being a wet wipe and do the right thing.

MyDayMyWay · 14/07/2026 22:40

The thing is OP is that you have taken a side already. Emma's side. Bullies thrive on the people around them saying nothing, never calling them out.

I feel so sorry for Anna..

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:41

I can’t add Anna back in as Emma started the group. If I start my own one and add Anna back in, then the other girls will tell Emma - that’s just a lot of drama I don’t need right now. Ok, I know I am failing Anna as a friend but it’s not my fault Emma has done this, and you never know there’s always two sides to everything, maybe there’s more to this than I know. Maybe Anna hasn’t told me everything

You haven't been supportive though. You've avoided having a conversation with Anna because it would be difficult for you and instead of actually supporting her you're sending her stupid videos.

We are judging you on exactly why you have said.

“oh oh am I wrong? I can’t possibly stand up for one of my closest friends, no no i just don’t like confrontation and I’m so scared of another close friend “.

pathetic.

Nousernameideaaga · 14/07/2026 22:41

Yes YABU

You stood by and watched Emma do this to Anna and didn’t intervene at all.

And you didn’t help Anna , the innocent party, when she begged you to.

I imagine Anna no longer considers you a friend. And from what you have said here it sounds like Emma as a friend is the consolation prize.

very sad for Anna. You should have been braver

Seasonofthesticks · 14/07/2026 22:41

It’s not about taking sides, it’s about standing up for what is right and being kind.

outerspacepotato · 14/07/2026 22:41

You know exactly why Anna's gone quiet.

You're a fair weather friend who goes along with the meanest so you won't be a target. You're not friends with Emma, you're afraid of her and you're a coward.

Whatado · 14/07/2026 22:42

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:26

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

Honestly your as bad.

Your a grown ass adult allowing your moral compass to be dictated by the mean girls shit in secondary school.

Anna shouldn't want anything to do with either of you.

But just remember throwing away your own boundaries of acceptable behaviour in how you treat other people wont save you when the bully Emma is turns on you.

As an adult I could on my fuck allow my self to be controlled by a spiteful cruel woman all so I could be part of the "cool club".

And I have raised my daughters to be the same if either of them were you in this situation as a teen they would have been cut the fuck of from Emma and told they were as bad as the bully she is.

And as for your husband good you both sound so desperate and honestly a bit pathetic.

Vaxtable · 14/07/2026 22:42

People are being harsh as you are just as nasty as Emma! She’s a bully and so it appears are you. You are accepting her behaviour how’s it going to be when she does to you what’s she has done to Anna?

you know Emma is in the wrong and you are doing nothing. You are such a coward

as your you dh worshipping Emma’s I would be concerned after what you have said about him. Hes not a good example either

How sad for Anna

BeardySchnauzer · 14/07/2026 22:42

Yes from everything you’ve said it sounds like Anna is the problem 🙄

is this the behaviour you want to model to your children? What would you tell them if they were the Anna in their scenario?

id actually be embarrassed to be in a group chat with mums who have forgotten that they’re not the ones at primary school

Maybe she hasn’t had the chance to.

She asked to talk to you, to have a conversation about it and you didn’t.

not sure what you want us to say?

What were you hoping to get from this thread? You are not going to get validation. So just stay out of it if you don’t want to rock the boat. You have lost Anna as a friend, and at some point Queen Bee Emma will turn on you too. But at that point don’t contact Anna. You might get more than a cat video.

You posted in AIBU.
YABU. YABVU.
You’re a shit friend, need to grow a backbone, develop some morals, and stand up for someone who is being bullied.

honeylulu · 14/07/2026 22:45

Emma is a mean girl bitch.
Emma's husband is a spiteful misogynist cunt.
You and your husband are pathetic little arse lickers.

Anna deserves nicer friends, I hope she finds them.

ILoveLeopard245 · 14/07/2026 22:45

I hear you feel conflicted- on one hand you feel Emma is unreasonable but on the other hand, part of you wants to avoid being on the receiving end.
I wonder what it is about Emma that makes you feel unable to challenge the behaviour? What would it look like if you were to put that aside, and act with integrity and kindness towards your friend Anna?
Everything comes with cost- saying nothing comes at the cost of your friendship with Anna and your own values perhaps. Saying something may come at the cost of your friendship with Emma. Only you can weigh up which is more important to you.
I would say that there seems to be a significant power imbalance between you all- Emma wants the power, and you give it to her. I’d think that’s probably incompatible for a meaningful and authentic friendship.

CinderellaGotOld · 14/07/2026 22:45

I think the problem is you haven’t heard Anna out. You could speak to her and explain you don’t want to get involved so at least she knows where you are coming from. Instead you are freezing her out yourself by totally ignoring the issue which is effectively taking Emma’s side. Emma sounds vile - from experience everyone will wise up sooner or later that she’s the bad egg - but my experience was when I was 16 - would like to think I wouldn’t tolerate that shit now.

OttersOnAPlane · 14/07/2026 22:45

Women like you are why my daughter was bullied in 6th form.

All her friends could see what was happening but didn't speak up. They quietly went along with the exclusion because they were scared the Emma of the group would turn on them. It was disgusting. Later, their mother's got in touch to say how ashamed of the girls they were.

But they were 16 and 17. You're a grown woman allowing a friend in difficulty to be victimised.

She sent you a message for help and you sent a goddamned cat video?

You aren't friend. You're an appeaser.

ExBert80 · 14/07/2026 22:45

Be great if Anna read this thread. We have her back even if you don’t and we don’t even know her.
