Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

Team Anna - no time or space in my life for the Emmas of this world

I did tell her I would meet her to chat about it but I honestly haven’t been able to find the time. I run my own business, I was away on holiday for a week, then I had loads to catch up on when I got home. I had intended to meet up with her at some point but now she has gone quiet on me so I presume she’s upset with me. I came on here to get advice on what I should or shouldn’t do, I didn’t expect such vitriol. And fwiw I don’t think Emma would do this to me. For one thing I don’t get into heated discussions with her about politics so there’s that. And also I don’t want to sound big headed but I entertain and throw great dinner parties and Emma enjoys those and her dh gets on great with mine, Emma is not going to jeopardise that connection and we know too many people in common, that sounds arrogant but I don’t mean it in that way. I don’t challenge Emma because yes ok I’m an appeaser so we are never gonna fall out like she did with Anna

You throw great dinner parties?

Oh yeah I've changed my stance now - it sounds like a really deep friendship you've with Emma there OP.

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

You and your DH are cringe af. Anna is better off without the lot of you.

outerspacepotato · 14/07/2026 23:04

You're actually worse than Emma. She's open about what she is. You pretend support in private but forget about that in public. You want the appearance of being a good friend, not the reality and that makes you a hypocrite to the core.

I have been extremely supportive of Anna all year during her health problems. I’ve driven her to health appointments, helped her with domestic stuff shopping etc, done all I could on that front, I just didn’t want to be dragged into her conflict with Emma. Why should I be, it’s between them. Maybe Emma was hurt by Anna too in that heated argument and a wife is always going to side with her husband. I’ve been a good friend to Anna, for 20odd years , supported her through her divorce etc I think some of the comments on here are really really unfair. Basically you are saying I have to withdraw from Emma, and get off the fence. That will have very negative consequences for me. Be honest can you all say you would actually do that ? Becasue it’s easy to judge but but not so easy to do the hard things

I just didn’t want to be dragged into her conflict with Emma

I can assure you that I would be proactively supporting Anna without any "dragging" involved.

I have a sense of honour and a hatred of injustice that cannot be overridden - even at personal cost. I would have no option but to support Anna and ditch Emma, because that's the right thing to do.

Anyway, losing Emma's dubious friendship doesn't sound like a high price to pay for being able to live with myself.

I can't believe you really expected any other outcome from your thread.

Selfish & a coward then.
You are not a friend to Anna at all.

Reading threads like this is so depressing...makes one realise why so much shit happens in the world, with bystanders like you in it.

🤦‍♀️

Maybe just stop posting now

30DegreesHighAndRising · 14/07/2026 23:07

That's great, you know your place with Emma, you will never challenge her and you provide great food and entertainment.

And what if her darling child turns on yours? Will you teach your child to appease Emma Junior too?

FriendlyNPC · 14/07/2026 23:07

Yes, you are a coward, but I understand why.

Listen, everyone hates conflict. But Anna has done nothing wrong, and while I get that you don't want to get involved, you are. And by just avoiding the issue, you are freezing Anna out for no good reason.

Ask Emma why she cut Anna out, tell her you think it's out of order, and if she doesn't sort it, then honestly I think you should just remove yourself. She's behaving like a queen bee child, and your silence signals your approval.

Honestly though your last post? You don't really sound that arsed about Anna anyway, more that you enjoy the friendship you have with Emma and don't want to jeopardise it. That's fine, but be honest with yourself. You're not being a good friend at all to Anna, and cutting you off would be the least you deserve tbh.

Every post is worse.

Well once you know what matters in life! Your all set.

I did question how my dh would respond in this scenario. He would tell Emma to her face shes a fucking bully and we wont be dictated to as adults who we can be friends with. Then he would tell her to fuck of I think and say he was like fuck ever socialising with her again.

I love when Im reminded every so often what a good person he is...

CrowMate · 14/07/2026 23:08

What a dreadful read. I think best you don’t get involved and let Anna break free of the both of you and find some supportive friends.

LexaVause · 14/07/2026 23:08

Christ, the more you post, the worse you sound.

Poor Anna. I'm not surprised she's slowly removing you from her life.

Who in their right mind sends stupid videos to someone who is asking for some support.

OP you have jumped the shark here.

NorthXNorthWest · 14/07/2026 23:09

Saying nothing is taking a side. In this case, it's siding with a bully. If you were against that behaviour you would have said something.

This isn't about hating conflict, it's about character. Your silence has shown Anna exactly where your loyalties lie and more importantly who you are as a person. As others have said, sound like she is better off without you.

EatMoreChocolate44 · 14/07/2026 23:10

This has to be fake! Emma is the pantomime villain and Anna is the damsel in distress. If it is true then shame on you OP. You reap what you sow.

This!

LifeOfAShowgirl13 · 14/07/2026 23:10

I feel so bad for Anna. Sometimes we need to do uncomfortable things in order to do what is right. It isn’t comparable to a primary school squabble - this is a grown adult bullying another. You asked if others would stand up to Emma - I absolutely would. I lost all my friends at sixth form because the group was bullying a boy and I spoke up to them. I would do the same again - I would rather have no friends than shit friends! But you won’t be friendless, you will have Anna, and that will mean everything to her. If not, please feel free to hook me up as Anna’s mate, she deserves better.

WonderingAndOverthinking · 14/07/2026 23:11

OP, if Anna posted on here (as an unknown person to you) asking for support and guidance on this issue, what advice would you give her?

Passingthrough123 · 14/07/2026 23:13

Emma is a mean girl bully and you are an enabler and a poor excuse of a friend to Anna. Shame on you. She’s better off without the both of you.

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:14

Ok to address some points: Emma has been good to me over the years, she sounds awful here (and she is if she falls out with you) but she has been incredibly kind and supportive to me over very difficult times in my life. So has Anna. So I didn’t want to lose either of them as friends and up till recently I had hoped this would all blow over or settle down and things would go back to the way they had been. I suggested to Anna after the WhatsApp group removal that maybe she should go talk to Emma, try and iron things out but Anna totally dismissed that saying that ship has sailed and she wants nothing more to do with Emma - so now that I know it’s permanent I suppose I have to decide what to do. I do genuinely like Emma. I’m not condoning her behavior but maybe there’s another side to it. Anna can be quite strong willed and stubborn too, I don’t think she should have gotten into the Boris argument over our dinner. I’ve tried to be a good friend to both, I don’t think I should be getting so much abuse for that.

The other girls don’t know and don’t get involved, me Emma and Anna were the closest. I suspect ifs for two reasons, a few years back Emma and Anna had a heated discussion about how Boris Johnson had handled Covid. Emma was insisting that Boris had done the best job he could, that he was far more intelligent than us and that we should trust his judgment and we shouldn’t question his integrity. Anna just wasn’t having that, and she completely disagreed and it was quite heated as neither would back down. I felt really uncomfortable as I hate political discussions and I’m not interested in politics - I think Emma held a grudge ever since then. A year or so later Emma’s dh (who is kind of an asshole) made a really horrible comment about Anna’s sister in front of all their friends and Anna while her sister was at the bar buying him a drink! He was really drunk so Anna said nothing to him then but the next day spoke to him privately and told him he was bang out of order for saying such horrible things about her sister and that she did not appreciate it and he was fuming that he was being taken to task, told Emma, and of course Emma was gonna take her DH’s side. I heard his comment and it was ugly and misogynistic. I would not have confronted him tho if it was me as I hate confrontation, I just wish this would all bloody go away and go back to the way it was 😖

Emma needs to be ditched for this alone:
Emma was insisting that Boris had done the best job he could, that he was far more intelligent than us and that we should trust his judgment and we shouldn’t question his integrity.

Does she align herself in some way to Boris' intellectual superiority? And how very dare Anna challenge this? What a strange, simplistic and dictatorial viewpoint to convey to your 'friend'. Sounds like Anna is best off without the both of you to be honest.

You say you are aware Emma has been unkind but you don't want to rock the boat, so I guess you do you.
