Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

I'm not sure why people get so angry by reverses.

I assume that they would have given the same responses either way so why does it matter?

I’m not angry, I just don’t believe her 🤷‍♀️

It matters because the OP was telling lies. For instance, in her role as "friend" she reported in detail what was said at the meeting between herself and Emma, which in reality she couldn't possibly know.

It's taking advantage of people who spent time replying and giving advice in good faith.

I can’t imagine why she wants to start another thread. What does she think people are going to say differently, assuming they respond? (I won’t.) Or does she just want more sympathy?

Yeah I'm a bit annoyed by all this. Reverses are fine when the op comes clean in the first page or two, but this thread has run on for over a dozen pages. Waste of my time when I posted in good faith and its the second con thread in a week I've invested time to - it's put me off replying to others I normally would.

This was the point I made to MN but I was told to run along….

I'm interested in the 2nd con thread now

Its been removed - ran for more pages than this one. Someone made up a scenario to analyse responses and claimed it was part of their PhD research

To find threads and posts by another user do an advanced search and then search by username and threads or posts:

@MrSchubertWhiskersThat’s not true. I don’t know anything about that other thread or who posted it. If anyone wants to do an advanced search on my post history they’re welcome to. They’ll see exactly who I am and that no such thread exists.

No-one said the other thread was yours.

Edited to explain - the poster simply said that she had been fooled by your thread and also fooled by another thread. She didn't say you were the author of the other thread

I didn't say it was you @Lilifer

Lilifer · Yesterday 12:05

@keepincool I may have misread the sequence of posts but the way it read to me was that you said were looking forward to the next thread, and then the reply from @MrSchubertWhiskersseemed to suggest that a second thread had already been posted and removed, and that the thread had claimed it was PhD research. I took that to mean people thought that was me. That’s genuinely how it came across to me anyhow. It was nothing to do with me and an advance search will show that.

She lsaid "SOMEONE made up a scenario to analyse responses and claimed it was part of their PhD research" (emphasis mine). If she was accusing you of having done it, she'd have used your name (or said OP or she or some such).

Newname29 · Yesterday 12:16

You are a rotten friend. Anna is better off without all of you. I had a similar scenario and the you in the situation didn't stick up for me. I find it unbelievably weak and have a much more peaceful life without tnem in it.

It's definitely unbelievable (one of the times you need to at least read the OP's posts).

I did not say I was "looking forward" to your new thread. I said I would be interested to see how a new thread (for the same AIBU, but not as a reverse) would pan out.

Separately another poster asked how people find threads by specific users, as she was interested in how many of us were able to challenge the claims you were making in this thread. I've shown her how to do that.

@TheJoySpreaderi take your point and a part of me knows you are right. But at the same time I know that Emma will not fall out with me, partly because our dh’s get on well, and because I don’t get into conflict with her. I’ve no interest in politics anyway and I just don’t challenge her because life is easier that way, not just with Emma but with other friends and family. Not everyone is cut out for conflict and bad feeling. I’ve had fairly traumatic family fall outs that have left me very averse to it.

I tried to message Anna to ask how she got on at the weekend visiting her daughter and have got no reply so I am not sure what else I can do now if she isn’t replying to me.

I mean, if you're averse to conflict, why would you hang out with this Emma? It seems very much her modus operandi to instigate conflict so I predict her bullying future friends of yours too.

You're coming across as Anne in Motherland.

#TeamAnna, she's better off without the pair of you

The poster claims that she is Anna - she revealed it was a reverse about 600 posts in.

Oh Christ - I can't keep up with that kind of shenanigans. Bloody hell. OK in that case I have no idea who the person she was pretending to be was but to Fake Anna I would say RUN GIRL RUN - step away from that alleged friendship because that is not what friends are.

LightningTree · Yesterday 15:37

I can’t believe that posters are still taking this thread at face value even though OP has outed herself as Anna. Firstly, as @Boringmelhas pointed out, the account of the meeting between Mutual Friend and Emma must be pure fiction since Anna would have no knowledge of such a meeting. Secondly, we all gave our original responses because we believed that, as a relative neutral, Mutual Friend was a reliable source. In fact we were getting unreliable narrator Anna’s version of events. If the meeting is a complete fabrication, how much of Emma’s alleged bad behaviour is too?

Goditsmemargaret · Yesterday 16:08

Good for you Anna, you don't need those women in your life. I'm sorry you've been through such a hard time.

I had a similar experience about ten years ago and it slightly changed how I look at the world.
