Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

This reminds me of a friendship group I had in my teens. One girl would single out one of us for snide comments etc while choosing another to be bff with. It took a lot of courage to stand up to her at that age, needless to say I haven't kept in contact for many decades.

I think Anna is better off without any of you, I wouldn't want you as a friend if you were cosying up to someone who was bullying me.

Seasonofthesticks · 14/07/2026 23:17

Why is Emma allowed to state her opinion on boris but Anna does and she’s the one causing the problem? How does that make sense?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:15

I honestly don’t know. Maybe to try and see it from the point of view of the friend who is stuck in the middle

But you aren’t stuck in the middle. You’ve chosen Emma the bully

Procrastination4 · 14/07/2026 23:17

What Emma is doing to Anna is bullying. As you don’t want draw Emma’s bad attitude on yourself, you are allowing the bullying to continue. That’s how bullies operate. I guess you have to ask yourself who you want in your life-a time bomb like Emma or Anna. “Friendship” because of fear-which is your friendship with Emma-is a very bad place to be. Dump her and do yourself a favour by getting that manipulative bully out of your life pronto.

You are not stuck in the middle though. By fobbing Anna off and not bothering to meet up, you’ve shown her you’ve chosen her bully. I’m not surprised she’s withdrawn.

I did tell her I would meet her to chat about it but I honestly haven’t been able to find the time. I run my own business, I was away on holiday for a week, then I had loads to catch up on when I got home. I had intended to meet up with her at some point but now she has gone quiet on me so I presume she’s upset with me. I came on here to get advice on what I should or shouldn’t do, I didn’t expect such vitriol. And fwiw I don’t think Emma would do this to me. For one thing I don’t get into heated discussions with her about politics so there’s that. And also I don’t want to sound big headed but I entertain and throw great dinner parties and Emma enjoys those and her dh gets on great with mine, Emma is not going to jeopardise that connection and we know too many people in common, that sounds arrogant but I don’t mean it in that way. I don’t challenge Emma because yes ok I’m an appeaser so we are never gonna fall out like she did with Anna

You sound worse with every post!

Jesus I can’t believe people are being so harsh. I’ve tried to be supportive without actually taking a side. This isn’t primary school, I shouldn’t have to take a side. And it’s not easy. We all have stress in our lives and I don’t need any more. You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me.

Unfortunately for you there are sides. There is a bully and the person being bullied. You need to choose. If you continue doing nothing you are choosing the bully.

LexaVause · 14/07/2026 23:18

But you haven't been a good friend to both have you.

And I'm sure Anna would agree with that.

OttersOnAPlane · 14/07/2026 23:18

So you're untruthful as well as a coward?

First it's "I can't say anything because it will have a negative outcome for me."

Now it's "Emma would never backstab me because of my incredible dinner parties."

Maybe to try and see it from the point of view of the friend who is stuck in the middle

You aren't stuck in the middle. You aren't the victim here. You've taken a side.
You really are craven. Poor Anna.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 14/07/2026 22:50

Yes you are a coward.you are frightened of emma..you think you will avoid it happening to you but you won't.. its like that poem that starts " fieT they came for the socialists .and ends ...and them they came.for me..aNd there was no one left to stand up for me".
Poor Anna..
You recognise Emma behaved badly and you didn't call it out. And now you send funny pictures and avoid speaking to her

If I was Anna I would feel well rid once I'd grieved the friendship I thought I actually had

You can't sit on the fence when someone is a bully.

Interestingly I was thinking of that poem too, especially in the light of the fact that, in line with her spineless appeasing approach to friendship politics, OP claims she has no interest in wider politics. She is a passenger in life there just as she is with her friends.

It's a privileged position, isn't it? OP keeps her nose clean and is all comfy, so doesn't have to think about whether Boris, ahem I mean her friend Emma, is shafting other people with nasty selfish policies...

@Lilifer I don't think you're unforgivably unreasonable to avoid conflict and not pick a side in a dispute you are not part of. but I think it's really poor form to respond to a friend who is struggling with silly videos. You are not in primary school. It's incredibly immature to refuse to engage in a serious conversation with someone you describe as a close friend.

There's a difference between wanting to avoid direct conflict and hating discomfort so much you shut down any discussion. Emma and her husband sound awful and you are playing a risky game aligning yourself with them.

Northernlassie123 · 14/07/2026 23:20

If I were Anna I’d be setting up a new mums whasapp group and finding other friends.

Nonbio46 · 14/07/2026 23:21

Thechaseison71 · 14/07/2026 22:22

Well you aren't a nice friend are you

My thoughts exactly.

ToThePoint2026 · 14/07/2026 23:22

Sorry but Emma and her dh would not be considered friends by me and my DH. Bullies, nasty, can't stand people like that there way or no way...Sadly you've also proved your not worth having as a friend as you choose to stand by fake ass people rather than stand up and actually stick with the one nice one plus your childish sending gifs and ignoring another person's feelings after knowing what wants on and how she was not in the wrong at all rather being bullied

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 14/07/2026 23:22

This is real mean girls type behaviour from Emma. And you haven’t been a good friend to Anna. It doesn’t matter what you did before, ultimately she’s being bullied and you don’t have her back. Because you’re also afraid of the bully. Yes you can find conflict stressful (who doesn’t) but it’s when you’re in a situation like Anna is that you see who is in your corner and you’ve shown you aren’t. Awkward deflective cat videos aren’t what she needed, she needed a friend

No, it sounds more like secondary school, or Mean Girls where you are a Gretchen Wieners type.

This may sounds extreme, but I actually think you could benefit from sitting down with a therapist or someone to unpack why you are reacting this way.

Afraid of a friend when you are an adult with children; sending your hurting friend cat videos and avoiding conversation; I'm sure you know these actions are cowardly.

Even Anna asking you to take a passive aggressive route to ice Emma out is a bit strange. Everyone sounds very immature here.

Conflict isn't easy, but it's important to at least want to face it full on when you need to.

outerspacepotato · 14/07/2026 23:23

I run my own business,

That's funny, I thought you worked civil service.

ChiliFiend · 14/07/2026 23:23

So you've watched someone in your friendship group get bullied and you're scared to stand up for her because you're afraid of getting bullied yourself? Are you 12 years old?

Why do you actually want to be friends with the bully? Most of us cut out those people from our inner circles by the time we reach adulthood because we realise how much better life is without them.

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 14/07/2026 23:23

Also Emma has form cutting people out - Anna isn’t the first and won’t be the last. If she needs someone to rally against and bully, who says it won’t be your time one day

coinkidinks · 14/07/2026 23:23

Ugh you’re an awful friend and an even more awful human being, to desperately want to be friends with a Boris supporter and everything that that implies. I have a psycho bitch of an older sister in law, and the younger sister in law is just like you- she will blithely ignore everything and try and play happy families, hosts ‘great parties’ to try and control the optics and bury her head in the sand, and all the ‘oh I don’t like conflict’ finally reared its ugly head, when she got called out on it all and proceeded to cut off half the family, because she doesn’t want to face up to the real issue which is her ‘intimidating’ big sister.

CombatBarbie · 14/07/2026 23:23

Has Anna been invited to any parties youve had since the falling out?

Whilst I agree healthy debate is good, both should be respectful of each other's views. As friends.

The comment to her DH on calling him out on his behaviour was warranted and good for her sticking up for her sister (maybe sit on that sitiation....anna had her sisters back, you could quite easily have said to Emma when it blew up, "not being funny but what DH said was out of order"), instead of being embarrassed, they got angry. Because thats how bully's react when you call them out.

You won't be Anna...... but this group may well end up just you and Emma, Emma's little puppet.

Cailleach1 · 14/07/2026 23:24

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:26

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

I suspect your turn will come, and of course you won’t get a choice of time or place. That ball is firmly in Emma’s court, as you pussyfoot around her. You’ll be waiting for the other shoe to drop with Emma (around whom you have to walk on eggshells).

I’d remove that stress from my life. Anna might be happy to meet for a coffee.

RedRock41 · 14/07/2026 23:25

Chase two hares (keeping your options open) it’s likely neither side will trust you again. Chase one, lose the other too so it’s a tricky situation.

Hippee · 14/07/2026 23:25

I knew an "Emma". Not a friend, but a mum I sometimes had to work with on the PTA. She fell out with lots of people and really turned on them. I thought I could avoid conflict by just being calm and professional, but no - she was slagging me off behind my back. Luckily she wasn't a friend, so I wasn't too bothered - but what I am saying is that you may not be able to avoid conflict with Emma forever - and no-one will have your back either.

Tabarnak · 14/07/2026 23:25

Is this a reverse and you are Anna?

Because I can’t quite get someone being so cowardly and not being a support for Anna. Emma is excluding, isolating, humiliating Anna and you are too cowardly to do anything but expect her to Lol at stupid videos?

In support of men’s friendship you will chuck Anna under a bus?

Badly done , @Lilifer , badly done.
