Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

For what it’s worth I am glad it was a reverse and you got to see that Team Anna was resounding & strongly on your side. Take comfort in that and ditch the bitches

I very much do @CunningLinguist2thank you. I know people are angry on here with me and I totally get that, I would probably be angry too - but this thread has helped me more than I can say, I have been putting up with a lot for a long time, and this thread helped me gain a perspective that I don’t think I could have gained on my own.

I'm not sure why people get so angry by reverses.

I assume that they would have given the same responses either way so why does it matter?

I think this wasn’t a normal reverse, the detail the op went into about “her” meeting up with Emma to discuss things wasn’t a reverse, it didn’t happen, it was a figment of her imagination

Well no. Because the reverse isn’t a true reverse. It’s a reverse that is still based on that person’s POV.

And therefore it’s a waste of time, as it results in a resounding YABU to the reverse, which helps the OP feel justified they’ve been wronged or are the innocent one.

This thread very obviously painted the fake OP as a horrible friend, because that’s how she was explained. We don’t have the friend’s side of the story. And yes, I know that’s how threads work, but by creating a reverse, it just misleads everyone.

For all we know, Anna is drama and the friend in the middle has had enough which is why she’s staying out of it and appears to be taking sides. Instead, by pretending to be the friend, the real OP will walk away feeling like they’ve been vindicated.

Exactly. It’s all so very odd. The way the OP was drafted just made the fake OP look like a horrible friend (“she reached out to me desperately and I just sent cat memes in response”). And it just went on and on. So very strange.

I have been extremely supportive of Anna all year during her health problems. I’ve driven her to health appointments, helped her with domestic stuff shopping etc, done all I could on that front, I just didn’t want to be dragged into her conflict with Emma. Why should I be, it’s between them. Maybe Emma was hurt by Anna too in that heated argument and a wife is always going to side with her husband. I’ve been a good friend to Anna, for 20odd years , supported her through her divorce etc I think some of the comments on here are really really unfair. Basically you are saying I have to withdraw from Emma, and get off the fence. That will have very negative consequences for me. Be honest can you all say you would actually do that ? Becasue it’s easy to judge but but not so easy to do the hard things

You are saying I have to withdraw from Emma, and get off the fence.

Well yes. Why? Because Emma is a bully and Anna is not.

I suppose if you can only gain perspective by admitting you are telling lies you have more to worry about than your friends.

🙄

It's not at all the same. We thought we had the OP explaining why she's not been supporting Anna and her reasons made her seem completely heartless. But in fact we just had Anna's guesses as to why the friend isn't supporting her - we don't have any idea what is actually going on with the supposed OP.

I wish I could do this but it’s not just us girls, the husbands are friends too, we have all been intertwined for 20 odd years. I have tried to stay friends with both, now I see that isn’t really possible, I need to choose basically.

Anyone normal would ask about this. You're not very kind.

That’s exactly it. The fake OP was painted as comically awful, do, of course she was constantly told she was unreasonable. She may well be, but I’d my vote until we actually hear her side.

The fact that “Anna” went so far in her lies to create fictional meetings between the other two, is also crazy.

Whatwerewetalkingabout · 19/07/2026 02:07

OP, now you've gotten the reverse out of the way can you actually tell is the full story from your POV including any political discussions you may have had if you in fact have reversed them too.

I would ignore all the support you may have seemingly had as we don't actually know your "friend in the middle's" motivations as you've painted her as someone completely callous and we actually have no idea why she hasn't gotten involved. (So my comment no longer stands as it was based on an unreliable narration of your friends motives)

I'm also starting to suspect the political arguments may have been reversed too and you're the one who's been defending Trump/Boris and have frustrated your friendship group.

Are you still trying to pull the wool over our eyes? 🤥

Chickadee26 · 19/07/2026 06:16

Anna needs to accept Emma doesn’t like her and stop dragging other people into it. If she needs support there are plenty of support groups online. And the people in those groups are about support and won't mind.

Well personally I find them disingenuous, as things that can only ever be guesses are presented as fact.

But I think this one is a very distinct case, as the OP is a prolific poster many others recognised, meaning they all saw holes in the story (which aren’t actually holes if you know she’s Anna, not Emma). No one could take it seriously after that, and MNHQ got very trigger happy about deleting posts and handing out suspensions, when they knew perfectly well why the story didn’t add up. That’s what people are angry about.

Lilifer · 19/07/2026 10:42

@Whatwerewetalkingabout yes I will do that. I expect I will be obliterated in the circumstances. I am going to start it as a new thread with an explanation at the start about the previous reverse and see what the responses are.

It seems like you are loving the attention and clearly more assertive (and deceptive) than you originally painted yourself to be - I definitely think you need to buckle in.

Will you be writing an article for Medium about all this, OP?

keepincool · 19/07/2026 11:44

Oh, I'm definitely interested to see how the new thread will pan out. It's just a shame that you didn't start this thread with the truth from the start instead of persisting with the pretence that was a reverse. To clarify, a reverse is someone pretending to be someone that they are not, so in effect this thread was a complete lie almost to the end. How can anyone be sure that a new thread will be completely truthful? You had posts deleted by people who, quite rightly, didn't buy into your lies. You were so in character that you got angry with posters who genuinely thought you were the person you were only pretending to be.

Did you tell MNHQ that your thread was a reverse when they investigated it? Or did you keep up with the pretence with them too?

Nothing at all but there is a discrepancy between how you have portrayed “Anna” in the original story and how you are behaving now.

Why would you start a new thread when this one has over 300 posts before it’s full? The whole thing is weird. You’re weird.

Because it’s desperate attention seeking behaviour. It’s no wonder the WhatsApp group wanted rid.

What's the point of starting a new thread? Are you still looking for advice on what to do? Isn't it obvious your friend is wrong and you're better off moving on if your other friends are not willing to be supportive because they don't want to upset Emma and her husband?

What exactly is a new thread going to tell you aside more drama and time spent on mumsnet and wasting people's time?

The time and effort you spent in reverse mode makes no sense at all and makes me wonder if you enjoy the attention?
