I read this quote and it encapsulates exactly how I feel

'I never thought I'd see the day when the Right became the cool ones giving the finger to the establishment, and the Left became the snivelling self-righteous ones going around shaming everybody'

AIBU to think this is what many people think these days? We didn't leave the left, the left left us.

*the quote is from John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten. He's deliberately provocative in lots of ways, but he meant this one. I fully expect some people to come on the thread to tell us all how he's a horror and said he likes Donald Trump. That would be them missing the point.. but.. Let Them..

Bless you for proving the point so very quickly!

No it’s the centre that’s cool!

ghostyslovesheets · 09/05/2026 18:20

How? I’m just saying he’s not cool and he IS the establishment!

TeenLifeMum · 09/05/2026 18:20

The efforts to sway political views on here are getting embarrassing. I wonder if there’s a mn team set up to target mums and this was their solution 🙄

The “Mumsnet election” was GE2010. Since then it’s been an embarrassment of bots and other plants

OneTealShaker · 09/05/2026 18:23

Yes the left are now woman hating, working class hating, country hating, just generally a hating bunch of people. Always moaning, always complaining, as usual pulling everyone down to their level.

Working class warriors, they ain’t.

I don't like Nigel Farage but the establishment is the BBC, the government, the pro diversity obsession of all the institutions that run the country and so on.

Farage is obviously not part of that.

I'm not convinced he's particularly anti establishment but the very fact that he calls out immigration shows he's not part of the establishment - which is presumably why he's got significant support

SlumChum · 09/05/2026 18:26

The Left are not all blue-haired cry babies, just as the Right are not all racist flag shaggers. But both sides of the spectrum have rage-filled weirdos foaming at the mouth that people don't agree with them. I don't think politics is ever cool though, its all establishment, usually based on wealth.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2026 18:29

Love the idea that the privately educated ex City trader Farage with all his links to the super rich is not part of the establishment!

SlumChum · 09/05/2026 18:31

The 'anti-establishment' Nigel Farage was born to a wealthy family (father a stock broker), attended elite private schools, and then followed in his father's footsteps to become a trader on the London Metal Exchange.

Punk fucking rock 🤣

This is Brexit 2.0. You fucking won and you're still moaning. Grow up.

SlumChum · 09/05/2026 18:34

I for one welcome our new overlords. I'm hoping Reform will repaint our lampposts, they're looking a bit tired. Plus there's a playground up the road that needs a new swing set. They are going to be very busy!

Totally agree. He has also always been treated with kid gloves by the BBC and has never been challenged or scrutinised like MPs from other parties.

Now that the elections are over, he has only just been asked by Beth Rigby about the £5 million donation he received and he took the question very badly indeed and refused to give an answer.

It’s a strange syndrome that the left have. Call people racist, thick, stupid and all sorts of other other names and then wonder, cry, wail and moan that these people have the audacity to not vote the same way as they do. That these people actually choose to vote for people who don’t call them names and look down upon them with disdain.

It shows. You see it so clearly. Whenever Labour and Green politicians speak, it’s like their persona is dripping with contempt for the little people beneath them. The hate this country and they hate the electorate. They see themselves above us all.

I have second-hand embarrassment for you OP and anyone agreeing with this. I have no need for any politician or decision-maker to be ‘cool’. I need them to be competent, principled and hard-working. Beyond the teen years, the pursuit of coolness is probably the most uncool
thing you can do!

Devolution has been an unmitigated disaster. An absolute shitshow. The economies and public services of the devolved nations are in even worse shape than England.

Sure start centres. How imaginative. While advancing nations are building the hyperloop, or creating the tech of tomorrow, we’re supposed to be jumping up and down about….surestart. The bar is low.

Tax credit expansion has absolutely destroyed productivity in this country. Why would employers invest in automation when they can get cheap labour subsidized by the taxpayer. Better still, get cheap immigrant labour and watch the benefits bill balloon even more.

NHS spending increases is no flex. The NHS is a disaster. So are it outcomes.

Maybe think carefully about outcomes before repeating soundbites.

The reverse is also true unfortunately and if you haven’t seen it then you aren’t looking in the right places- Many Reform voters ( and politicians) disdain for anyone who has done ok and not a scaffolder or banker( going on both ends of their support) and simply doesn’t support them .

They haven't called you names, but they've called plenty of other people names.

15 Reform councillors have been suspended including:

Lynn Dean (Staffordshire) for saying Black people were less intelligent than White people.

Tom Pickup (Lancashire) who called for a genocide of Muslim people

Robert Bloom (North Northamptonshire) who used racial slurs against a Black constituent

It's not the Left that are starting all these threads. The vast majority of threads since the election have been posted by Reform or Restore supporters.

I’d say it’s exactly the opposite. It’s the left that hates people who do well for themselves. Because everyone should be poor and state handout dependent in the socialist playbook.

So so so typical. I think you'll find the bit I highlighted is the most important aspect of the quote, but it needed context. Obviously you and others like you go to this bit - par for the course, and again, brilliantly demonstrating the point. You couldn't make it up/ Oh yes, you could..
