They normally shut at 10, was relying on it, turned up at 9.30 as were loads of people who then, like us, had to exit the car park!!

You should have checked earlier

TheatricalLife · 23/12/2025 23:40

Could be for any number of reasons.
Fridge/freezer breakdown, staff shortages to the degree they didn't have enough people to close later, restocking shelves (they do close earlier now and again to do this) 🤷‍♀️ it's probably online or on their app somewhere.
Never mind. I'm sure everyone will manage to go to another shop and get what they want.

You literally had all day?

How do you know that? Do you know OP personally?

suburberphobe · 23/12/2025 23:46

How will you cope OP in future?

You know Christmas time is madness, so get your shopping in and organise a week before.....

She's my next door neighbour

She saw me through the window watching QVC all day, eating my way through the Christmas chocs

Thats why I had to rush out at that ungodly hour to do my big Christmas choc shop and endure chaos. Sheer chaos it was

But it was ok in the end I was fired up on sugar.

If you went shopping on Saturday why didn't you go to Lidl then? It's a bit risky to assume they'd even have much stock at 9:30 on the 23rd. If they had nothing left on the shelves there's no point being open.
I know you said you were working today but I don't understand why you couldn't go on a non working day.
Just out of interest where about do you live,? I have never seen many people going to a supermarket 30 minutes before it closes (and yes I did work in retail).

The OP will cope fine in the future as the shop is normally open till 10pm, hence the thread…

Why would one assume a supermarket will be bare? Christmas is coming not a lockdown!

Well Im not sure to be honest. When one cant trust a website these days

I suppose I'll be reduced to driving a bit further down the road and going to Tesco like tonight.

Im going to set up a gofundme for the distress caused.

I think Lidl have got insider information about an apocalypse.

I forgot to add in to this sorry tale that we popped into Asda after going to Tesco too as we needed cat food. That the cat will only eat from there. At the moment.

Outrageous! You'll be telling us they're not open Christmas day next!

They can’t go home, they need to be ready for 6am xmas eve so they will need to work through the night restocking the decimated shelves. There will be more criminals doing their big Christmas shop tmw despite the fact they could have done it in August.

For what it's worth YANBU, how annoying

Power26 · 24/12/2025 00:00

I mean, I would have just checked in advance before leaving it to chance. December 23 is firmly in the Christmas opening hours period and many shops adjust their hours in the run up to Christmas and new years.
