Just that really.

I mean what are they thinking?

Let us remember how much warning you have had of Christmas. And probably shop hours advertised a week or more in advance.

2000 years?

Arlanymor · 24/12/2025 16:40

23doorsdown · 23/12/2025 23:01

@Arlanymor If a supermarket was open until 10pm last Tuesday and the Tuesday before that I wouldn’t expect it to close earlier than normal on a normal working day in the run up to Christmas. Extended hours are normally the norm pre Christmas not shorter.

Edited

You might 'expect that' - but having looked at Lidl hours for the two shops closest to me it is the opposite. I just don't see why it's so hard to go online (as indeed we all are now!) and double check at a time of year when we know hours are likely to be unusual - in either direction.

JohnTheRevelator · 24/12/2025 16:50

9am? Or pm?

TheSillyCrab · 24/12/2025 17:01

soupyspoon · 23/12/2025 22:42

They normally shut at 10, was relying on it, turned up at 9.30 as were loads of people who then, like us, had to exit the car park!!

I'd hate to think what you would be like if the world was ending. Give your head a wobble.

TheSillyCrab · 24/12/2025 17:02

soupyspoon · 23/12/2025 22:45

Yes, an hour, very strange. Other people completely perplexed as well!

No, I don't think they are perplexed. I think you are looking for others to share your outrage. I'm embarrassed on your behalf.

Rhodie72 · 24/12/2025 17:05

You've had ALL YEAR to shop.... Grow up

MrsPositivity1 · 24/12/2025 17:47

Good on them

Jc2001 · 24/12/2025 14:37

Well, to be fair to the op the 23rd Dec is not a public holiday and it's not unreasonable to expect normal hours.

And this faux, virtue signalling compassion for retail staff, gets a bit boring. Stop pretending you care.

Edited

Two DC have worked in retail and DDIL still does.

I have every sympathy for retail staff, especially as DD2 worked in a pharmacy through the pandemic. She experienced rude, and aggressive behaviour from a number of self entitled customers - although she also suffered from that at the best of times, before and afterwards.

What a bloody ridiculous statement! Buy fresh produce in July for December? Really?

I think this could work as a Christmas strategy though, means you can put the sprouts on in August and they'll be nearly done by Christmas.

Anyone else remember when ALL the shops used to close at lunchtime every Wednesday?

My Dad who is 77 mentioned this earlier today, though he said it wasn’t just shops, he said loads of workplaces used to finish for the day at lunchtime on Wednesdays.

In this 24/7/365 world we currently live in, I can’t imagine what that was like lol.

Howardyoudo · 24/12/2025 23:17

Sorry op but your replies have given me a good laugh ! Honestly this thread, I would be a bit irritated as well.

Im sure theres a free half hour with a solicitor somewhere I can arrange. About just this sort of life situation.

Perhaps penguin bollards would help😁.

Was that Christmas Eve they shut at 6?

soupyspoon · 23/12/2025 23:30

Oh am I?

Hold on, let me add that to the list

Expects to be open on Christmas day
Hates shop workers because they're durty
Been sitting around all day not doing anything
Been sitting around for weeks, didnt even realise it was Christmas coming up
Breaking the law over contraband Sunday brussel sprouts
Boring (probably the worst crime)

I'll update as we go along

OP can’t stop laughing at your posts! Keep it up

Squirrel60 · 25/12/2025 11:09

Oh, like, WOW! The shock! Gasp! Steps back in amazement! I can't stand Lidl but good on them. The staff need a break.

Shop assistants want to spend time with their families at Christmas too

Shop assistants want to spend time with their families at Christmas too

I'm a retired HR manager, worked in two industries where shifts covered 24/7. There are a surprising number of people who are happy to work Christmas Day. Some examples from my experience
People who are alone and prefer being in work
People who like the extra money and if festive food provided so much the better
People who are unhappy at home
People happy to swap shifts if they can get their celebrations off eg Hannukah/Diwali

My aim was always to make sure people who wanted the day off got it, people who wanted to be in work could be, people who wanted other festivals off got them. I can't claim it was always 100% but sometimes it was and other times it was close.

soupyspoon · 25/12/2025 14:52

Well the happy ending for this was that thankfully the Premier up the road from us is open today so as I didnt want to rush about in July to get my xmas dinner we got it today, lovely prawn mayonnaise sandwich for the starter, I 'deconstructed' it to make a traditional prawn cocktail! No one noticed

Then moved on to turkey and stuffing sandwiches and I was on to a winner as technically the use by date was yesterday so I got it for 30p, I had to quibble at the till though as he was going to chuck it in the bin, accompanied by tinned peas and potatoes, easy peasy.

Then I managed to get some of those Cadburys puds in a bag for afters, with a tin of custard

Two cafes also open and the petrol station. It was quite busy.

Nice.

Not somewhere I’d shop, can’t stand the smell in there no idea if it’s the cleaner they use on the floor but they all have the same vomit inducing smell.
Why didn’t you plan like everyone else and get your shopping in advance.

OonaStubbs · 25/12/2025 17:52

I went down to Lidl this morning to buy our Christmas turkey and was astonished to see it was closed. What are people supposed to do? It's disgusting.

You need to read the rest of the thread she’s being sarcastic. She had already done her Christmas shop. She nipped to Lidl for a top up.😂😂😂
