Just that really.

I mean what are they thinking?

I think Lidl have got insider information about an apocalypse.

I forgot to add in to this sorry tale that we popped into Asda after going to Tesco too as we needed cat food. That the cat will only eat from there. At the moment.

"At the moment" 😂

I mean, I would have just checked in advance before leaving it to chance. December 23 is firmly in the Christmas opening hours period and many shops adjust their hours in the run up to Christmas and new years.

No it isn’t 😂 it’s a normal working day. I’ve booked today off, but many of my other colleagues will have been working too. Even Christmas Eve isn’t a bank holiday, though it’s generally accepted that smaller places will likely be shut and other places will have altered opening hours (I have to book annual leave for it, it’s a working day!). The only bank holidays are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

That aside, Lidl’s website also states this is a normal working day, 10pm close. So no “chance” involved.

dapsnotplimsolls · 24/12/2025 00:13

I blame Keir Starmer. Good old Nige will have the shops open 24 hours and no more minimum wage. Huzzah.

soupyspoon · 24/12/2025 00:14

Well I havent got time to jibber jabber with you lot

Ive got to be up early tomorrow to start sitting around, probably start about 6am

Then around 8pm, I'll venture out on Christmas Eve, got to get my turkey, tinsel, stuffing, nuts that no one will eat, couple of bottles of baileys, profiterole thing, 16 cartons of cream and a tree. They better have a tree

Then I'll start another thread for you all.

If you went shopping on Saturday why didn't you go to Lidl then? It's a bit risky to assume they'd even have much stock at 9:30 on the 23rd. If they had nothing left on the shelves there's no point being open.

Why would one assume a supermarket will be bare? Christmas is coming not a lockdown!

Just going on my experience of working in retail and my DHs experience.
I can certainly remember how empty the shelves were the day before Christmas Eve long before 9pm

23doorsdown · 24/12/2025 00:24

Doesn’t match my experience of working in retail or head office. Stores like to precisely manage stock levels and maximise profits these days.

happysinglemama · 24/12/2025 00:34

I agree that's too early. Thanks to Aldi after working 14 hrs nursing shift I was still able to do my last minute shopGrin

They normally shut at 10, was relying on it, turned up at 9.30 as were loads of people who then, like us, had to exit the car park!!

They literally say they operate different hours during holidays.

Hairymaryfairy · 24/12/2025 00:43

I went to do my normal weekly shop at around 7pm tonight anyone wanting to buy Christmas dinner at our big tesco had no chance lots of empty shelves and fridges.

Omg have you rang the police

It’s too late for that - a cobra meeting called immediately by the PM is the only way to go now.

9 pm? Get a grip.

Outraged? That's how you might want to be about Gaza, climate change, or the UK' public finances. But not Lidl's opening times.

The day before Christmas Eve isn't a holiday though.

ActiveTiger · 24/12/2025 01:13

How about a little grace for those lidl workers being there from 3am the last few mornings to fill the shelves for you lot to start whisking away from 8am. Hardly seen hubby this week 14-15 hours he is so shattered when he gets home

Saracen · 24/12/2025 01:45

Yes, it's weird that they closed an hour earlier than their advertised closing time. I would have been caught out by that too. I can see why you're annoyed.

Rachie1973 · 24/12/2025 02:03

It’s listening to us! Get me a tin foil hat! Actually can you get those in Lidl middle aisles?

I opened the thread and I have Tesco and Aldi adverts down the side! It’s like someone wrote an algorithm!

I can’t imagine working in retail this time of year. I would want to shut too.

a compulsory 6-9month National Service working within the Retail Sector

Heyhelga · 24/12/2025 02:48

The shelves would probably have been fairly empty by 9.30 anyway I suspect. They'll be stocked up again in morning for you to make another attempt.

It’s really not, it doesn’t have to be a bank holiday to be considered part of the festive period. Jesus Christ the level of intelligence on this thread is in the gutter.

OonaStubbs · 24/12/2025 03:36

Shops should only be open 9-5 and they should be shut completely between Christmas Eve and January 2nd so that the staff can enjoy spending quality time with friends, family and loved ones.

Oh my goodness @soupyspoon the people who work in supermarkets, they work long shifts, you know they have got homes, to go home to!😱

HelmholtzWatson · 24/12/2025 03:40

Probably thinking their staff might want to enjoy Xmas as well.

Bjorkdidit · 24/12/2025 04:01

I'd be surprised it was shut if that was my normal shopping time and also annoyed because I'd then need to squeeze in a shopping trip today unless I can manage until the shops open again, possibly not until Sat.

But realistically at this time of year there would probably be so many items out of stock or 'in the back' that it would be totally pointless trying to do a shop anyway as there would have been several things you'd not been able to buy.

They probably had loads of stuff they needed to get out today, possibly a lot chilled or frozen, which needs time and difficult to do when the shop is open. This is often a problem particularly in Lidl (and Aldi) when they're trying to unload crates on the shop floor and would be even harder and possibly a H&S/fire issue I more crates and shoppers than normal.

Kimura · 24/12/2025 04:35

Lastfroginthebox · 24/12/2025 01:02

The day before Christmas Eve isn't a holiday though.

No, but 'the holidays' usually refers to the period around Christmas/New Year and I'd say it's pretty common for shops to adjust their hours for some/all of that period, and has been for years.

They usually have a sign up at the door, and there's always info online.

I think if you're going to a shop that late at this time of year, it's on you for not taking ten seconds to check it's open before you set off.
