You literally had all day?

By that logic shops wouldn't need to open past 5pm on any day. Are you not aware that actually most supermarkets open till at least 10pm every day but Sunday, at least in England and don't have guarda at the door tuttung at shoppers who dare to go in the evening

NotForTheMoneyandNotForTheApplause · 24/12/2025 08:35

Of course they do, us over 50s don't all have dementia 😂

Quote didn't work,b that was to @MrMucker

Anyone else remember when ALL the shops used to close at lunchtime every Wednesday?

I remember a time when there was no shops & we hunted for our food.

Yes, and there was no Sunday opening, no supermarkets (as people understand them today) and shops were only open until 5.30 - 6 pm generally. People survived!

The day of celebration for the Poles is Christmas Eve. They are not going to want to work late on December 23rd. I know DDIL told her manager in retail, she didn’t want to work on Christmas Eve (not one of her usual working days anyway).

Justchilling07 · 24/12/2025 08:14

I get what you’re saying, the supermarket was advertised to be open until 10pm.Surely though logically, a person would think, it wasn’t purposefully done, that the store closed an hour earlier, due to something happening in the store, a health and safety reason maybe. For op, to post they’re outraged, is a bit dramatic, l think that’s why there’s been these responses.

It's definitely OTT to use the term 'outraged.' But the majority of the responses haven't actually focused on the use of the term 'outraged'. They have been largely focused on her assumption that it would be normal hours. A lot of the responses have also been overdramatic and OTT. I actually think she would have got a similar response if she had used the term 'annoyed' as there are a lot of unhappy individuals on here who just enjoy laying into people.

That actually varied depending on what part of the country you were in. I found out by reading an old AA directory. They used to list towns details of how far it was from certain places which day was early closing and list a couple of hotels and restaurants

xanthomelana · 24/12/2025 09:28

I work in retail myself and would expect them to be open for at least their usual hours, most stores are extending hours not shortening them. That said they could have had a problem which has meant they’ve had to close earlier, that can be the only reason I can think of because no one closes early Christmas week.

soupyspoon · 23/12/2025 23:37

Diddled by Lidl.

Only I can say that!!

Should have got down there a Lidl earlier 😄

Greenwitchart · 24/12/2025 09:47

I initially thought you were outraged because the staff had to work late ...

But no, just a selfish post from someone who could not be arsed to plan in advance for the festive season.

Supermarkets near me are all open early / late / 24 hours.
Large suburban area. Depends on your area, I would say?

It’s really not, it doesn’t have to be a bank holiday to be considered part of the festive period. Jesus Christ the level of intelligence on this thread is in the gutter.

It’s not a bank holiday, and that’s completely relevant to the opening hours of a shop! it’s just a day near Christmas! Doesn’t matter how you decide to say otherwise , it doesn’t change the facts. “Festive period” doesn’t actually mean anything as far as business operations go you know? Hell, maybe everywhere should close on the 22nd? Or perhaps the 21st? No actually, may as well start on 20th then every day with a “2” at the beginning of it can be included in the “Christmas close down” 🙄

You right about the IQ on this thread. People seem to think that just because they stop all activity over Christmas that actually that’s somehow the rules?! Go and check every supermarket, they won’t change hours of opening til Xmas Eve at the earliest!! Ironic thing is, Lidl’s own website supports what I’m saying yet you’re embarrassing yourself by attempting to insult my intelligence 😂

SooPee · 24/12/2025 10:42

Perhaps there was a staff emergency, flood, fire, electrical fault, security issue, ie something urgent happened and the manger had to close the shop early. The shops are open today, if you don't have time to go today what ever you needed can be done without. I usually have something extra in the freezer just incase the meat has gone bad for no apparent reason on Christmas day for example, I don't know, pop to tesco express who open till 11pm bless em.

Actually using the shop closed early and so here's an iou/ £10 in your card is a fabulous excuse I may use myself 😊

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 24/12/2025 11:33

DD2 worked in a major supermarket. An elderly customer fell over and hit their head. Blood everywhere. Even though the pharmacist gave CPR, the customer died - it turned out a stroke killed them. The pharmacists were in a state of shock.

Anything like that could have happened? We wanted to go in a shop recently and it was closed in the daytime, due to a medical emergency.

Omg have you rang the police

Has to be logged with 101, but only after the ducks have been arranged in a row.

TheignT · 24/12/2025 12:25

soupyspoon · 24/12/2025 00:14

Well I havent got time to jibber jabber with you lot

Ive got to be up early tomorrow to start sitting around, probably start about 6am

Then around 8pm, I'll venture out on Christmas Eve, got to get my turkey, tinsel, stuffing, nuts that no one will eat, couple of bottles of baileys, profiterole thing, 16 cartons of cream and a tree. They better have a tree

Then I'll start another thread for you all.

Good plan! Anything left will be reduced. Cheap Christmas but could be random.

And they probably opened at 6am! What on earth has stopped you from shopping in the weeks leading up to Christmas? Those poor retail staff deserve a break.

Well, to be fair to the op the 23rd Dec is not a public holiday and it's not unreasonable to expect normal hours.

And this faux, virtue signalling compassion for retail staff, gets a bit boring. Stop pretending you care.

LlynTegid · 24/12/2025 14:43

Let us remember how much warning you have had of Christmas. And probably shop hours advertised a week or more in advance.

scalt · 24/12/2025 16:22

Once upon a time, many shops closed by 5pm on Christmas Eve, and didn’t reopen until 2nd January. Woe betide anyone who forgot batteries for toys.
