To be outraged that Lidl shut at 9 today

Just that really.

I mean what are they thinking?

OP posts:

I actually thought the OP was joking! FFS, people do have lives outside work.

SouthernNights59 · 24/12/2025 05:03

I can't understand why anyone would even want to shop after 9 pm, especially in winter. I called into my local supermarket to get a couple of things around 4.30 pm and there were lots of gaps in the shelves even then.

It’s really not, it doesn’t have to be a bank holiday to be considered part of the festive period. Jesus Christ the level of intelligence on this thread is in the gutter.

Indeed. The poster who said that staff might have had holidays booked deserves a special gold star.

Although there could have been a few who 'called in sick' because they hadn't been allowed to book leave during the busiest time of year for their employer so instead they deployed the usual MN solution to work getting in the way of life 'I'll just have COVID or diarrhea on that day'.

I can’t imagine working in retail this time of year. I would want to shut too.

Many years ago I worked in retail. If you worked your full hours in the week leading up to Christmas you were paid six weeks wages. For those of us with no commitments at home, I was a teenager so poor mother did all the planning/shopping/work, it was great. We started off the New Year with money in the bank. Thinking about it we may have wasted most of it in the January sales. Happy days.

Well I'm loving your replies @soupyspoon very witty 😅- I think you need to go on to 'Have I Got News for You' as a comedian ... give up the day job

The irony 😆😆

Shops should only be open 9-5 and they should be shut completely between Christmas Eve and January 2nd so that the staff can enjoy spending quality time with friends, family and loved ones.

Why just retail staff? What about hospitality staff? Let’s close all restaurants, cafes & hotels during Christmas Eve & the 2nd too. And definitely stop the buses, trains, tubes & cabs. Lorry drivers also need a break. We need to think about the emergency services and hospitals so let’s give the police, firefighters, paramedics, midwives, doctors and nurses the time off. Perhaps we should just shut hospitals as it’s also unfair on the porters, cleaners, security & support staff as well. Carers, funeral homes, coroners, agricultural staff, those in the energy sector, waste management, journalists, pharmacists, social services, prison officers, I can go on, all have families too & deserve quality time.

Just imagine what the beginning of 2026 would look like! The economy would be trashed (yes it can get worse) & who needs to worry about what’s on the TV when civil unrest is coming to a street near you!

Mapletree1985 · 24/12/2025 06:12

It was a red letter day Sunday last when the shops in our local mall opened for business. Normally, where I live, everything is shut on Sunday, except for the minimart at the train station.

Somehow we survive.

Fangisnotacoward · 24/12/2025 06:19

My local aldi and lidl close at 10 normally. If yours is the same I wonder why they closed an hour early? Especially at thus time of year.

Could there have been a power failure or something? I'd have thought the manager would at least stick a note on the door to explain

From the time the supermarket opened until 9 pm? I worked full time for nearly 50 years, still managed to get to a supermarket long before they shut.

Thinking of their staff . 9 is late enough !

I nearly fell out of bed this morning when I checked the opening times of my local M&S and saw 5am to 11pm. Absolutely awful for shop workers. Good on Lidl.

I have worked in retail on boxing day in the past and the smug shoppers out getting 'next year's presents' riled me immensely. !

Had to bite my tongue to prevent me saying
' THIS xmas is not over yet and I would rather be at home with my young kids enjoying it '

Matronic6 · 24/12/2025 06:59

I feel OP has got a bit of a pile on. It's not unreasonable she assumed a supermarket would have normal hours on the 23rd. My local Lidl was open until 10 as normal.

I wouldn't be that bothered to actually complain about it on here but I don't think she deserves to be ripped apart for assuming normal hours.

AhBiscuits · 24/12/2025 07:06

Ours closed at 10 as normal. I went at about 9. It was perfect, full shelves and almost no one there.

23rd December is a normal working day. The shop always opens until 10. I would have been put out if they randomly closed early. Today they are open until 6.

Yes OP indicates she was working that long! So unless you’re not going to believe her, we will assume that’s true. She may have a long commute and the 23rd is a working day.

I’ve also worked for 44 years and managed to get to the shops before they shut! But I also realise that working patterns have changed during that time, which is why OP was having to shop that late.

The shop indicated it was open as usual until 10! But it wasn’t.

soupyspoon · 23/12/2025 22:53

No, we always do our weekly shop on a Tuesday night at about 9/9.30 due to our working hours and rotas, tonights the night!

They always shut at 10 as do Asda and Aldi. Tesco at 11

We went in Tesco in the end.

We have our Christmas shopping, we did that Saturday, not sure why people are automatically assuming its a 'big Christmas shop' and 'not organised and deserve chaos'

Lot of projection there!!

If you'd said this in your OP it would have been easier to understand your issues.

bryceQ · 24/12/2025 07:51

All shops should close latest 6pm and let people go home.

Yeah, that's a great idea. I'm sure the retail industry would thrive if shops only opened during regular office hours when half the country is at work.

AgnesX · 24/12/2025 07:56

They normally close at 10 and you turned up at 9.30 😳. Hope you only wanted a pint of milk and not a full shop.

23doorsdown · 24/12/2025 07:59

All shops should close latest 6pm and let people go home.

Yep, workers don’t need to shop

Illbethereinaminute · 24/12/2025 08:14

To be fair, I used to work evenings and the shop around the corner from me closed at 11. If I wanted to nip in for some milk at 10.30 on my way home, I would be pretty annoyed to find it shut unexpectedly, Christmas or not. I could have gone in the morning but as far as I'm concerned the shop doesn't close until 11 so I have plenty of time to run in and grab the milk for the following morning.

I get what you’re saying, the supermarket was advertised to be open until 10pm.Surely though logically, a person would think, it wasn’t purposefully done, that the store closed an hour earlier, due to something happening in the store, a health and safety reason maybe. For op, to post they’re outraged, is a bit dramatic, l think that’s why there’s been these responses.

MrMucker · 24/12/2025 08:24

Anyone else remember when ALL the shops used to close at lunchtime every Wednesday?

All of December or just Christmas week for this ridiculous idea?
