To find DH’s outfit for dinner really unsuitable?

Meal out at a nice restaurant yesterday. DH wearing smart trainers, jeans and…a black Stone Island roll neck jumper. With badge on sleeve.

He says it’s smart/designer and suitable for the occasion.

I disagree. AIBU?

Trainers? Jeans? Neither of these are "smart".

canyon2000 · 22/12/2025 21:51

It sounds ok to me. What would you have liked him to wear?

PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul · 22/12/2025 21:52

What were you wearing op?

JudgeBread · 22/12/2025 21:52

Did he get kicked out for not adhering to the Dresscode?

If not, he's fine.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 22/12/2025 21:52

Really hard to tell as smart restaurant can vary hugely. But his outfit sounds fine for smart casual. Is it the top you are not happy with?

What were you wearing for comparison?

boxofbuttons · 22/12/2025 21:53

You can't wear a Stoney to dinner 😫Some jeans and trainers are definitely more smart-casual than casual so no issue with that. But Stone Island def isn't smart.

FinallyHere · 22/12/2025 21:53

Is this really a hill to die on?

ObliviousCoalmine · 22/12/2025 21:53

Was he expecting to encounter a group of Millwall fans and have a scrap?

Yes, the jumper was the issue.

A dress with heels.

My young adult kids say that Stone Island is a ‘roadman’ brand. I don’t really know exactly what that means, but it’s derogatory. My kids could also be being dickheads🤷🏼‍♀️

somanychristmaslights · 22/12/2025 21:54

Depends what “nice” restaurant means.

lots of people don’t “dress up” anymore. What did you wear?

NoSoupForU · 22/12/2025 21:54

What were you wearing?
What's the dress code of the restaurant?
And nice restaurant can be interpreted in all manner of ways really. To some people a chain place is a nice restaurant and to others it needs to have Michelin stars to be nice.

Catza · 22/12/2025 21:54

So he is wearing trainers to a "nice" restaurant and you have a problem with his choice of a top?

It certainly has a reputation, and not for positive reasons. Although as DH points out, it’s worn a lot more by ‘celebrities’ these days.

Wearing football hooligan attire to a nice restaurant is a no.

TwistedWonder · 22/12/2025 21:56

Unless somewhere specifies a dress code then smart casual is most people’s go to and obviously that means different things to different people.

TheSweetestCon · 22/12/2025 21:58

Stone Island is what football hooligans wear for a few pints and a punch up, isn't it? I wouldn't be happy with DH wearing that for any occasion, tbh.

Jeans and trainers can be fine even for a 'nice' restaurant (depending on the jeans, trainers and restaurant in question) but Stone Island, no thanks. Bad vibes.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 22/12/2025 21:58

Stone Island and football hooligans isn't something I'd link tbh

Sounds fine to me

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/12/2025 21:59

I mean stone island is hardly cheap ... it does have a reputation amongst teens and football hooligans but I doubt may people in a restaurant would see more than a roll neck sweater. Unless followers of Mr Yaxley Lennon ...

Dollybantree · 22/12/2025 21:59

Trainers are not suitable attire for a nice restaurant - but a lot of people don’t seem to make an effort these days.

My group of friends and I were laughing at all the middle aged men in stone island parka type jackets and mod Liam Gallagher-esque haircuts in a bar in Manchester on Saturday night 😂

FestiveBauble · 22/12/2025 22:00

Please tell me if you took any pictures he got the badge in?!

Its not restaurant attire to me, I’d bin one if my DH bought one 😂

StonwEd · 22/12/2025 22:00

Is that his normal style?
It's an ick from me but my husband has very different taste so would be extremely surprising to see him dressed like that!
If it was within dress code then I guess it's OK? Id only think trainers were ok if they were very cool smart ones. Which wouldn't really go with jeans i guess. Hard to say without more detail about restaurant!

Daytimetellyqueen · 22/12/2025 22:01

I would not be impressed with my DH owning Stone Island, never mind going out with me somewhere nice wearing it!

100% roadman

Ineedanewsofa · 22/12/2025 22:02

Does he know Stone Island’s reputation? Did he also wear his gucci man bag and slim leg nike joggers with a balaclava?!
