To find DH’s outfit for dinner really unsuitable?

Meal out at a nice restaurant yesterday. DH wearing smart trainers, jeans and…a black Stone Island roll neck jumper. With badge on sleeve.

He says it’s smart/designer and suitable for the occasion.

I disagree. AIBU?

Those Stone Island jumpers are foul and not smart at all.

It certainly has a reputation, and not for positive reasons. Although as DH points out, it’s worn a lot more by ‘celebrities’ these days.

I’m not surprised judging by the price of them! I’ve never heard of them and googled it 😳

DreamTheMoors · 23/12/2025 00:10

I’m willing to overlook a lot if he’s clean and well groomed.

And also, did you meet him there or did you leave home together?
Because if you left home together and objected so much to his attire, you clearly didn’t object enough to travel to the restaurant with him and walk in and sit down with him.

My older teens (all non-violent high achievers!) wear Stone Island for the football. It’s not hooligan wear, it’s terrace wear, which is now a whole thing in itself. I quite like it tbh. A stoney, Levi’s and Adidas Speziales. Maybe a parka if it’s freezing but more often not.

Football hooligans don’t really exist at most clubs now tbh. It’s just groups of lads having a laugh with their mates supporting their team. There seems to be quite a bit of snobbery around it here, which is a shame. My kids get so much from having season tickets to our local club. They’re part of a whole community.

I also have a season ticket and although the chanting can be a bit close to the bone, it’s rare to see a fight these days.

As for your husband OP, I think he can wear what he wants and as long as it was clean and ironed I wouldn’t care at all.

Terrace wear has always been around, it’s nothing new. Stone island is definitely worn by those people who want to portray themselves as being part of what was ‘hooligan’ culture, even if they are nice boys who wouldn’t say boo to a goose. The fact it’s expensive only adds to its appeal and people on here who seem to think it’s some sort of coveted label are very wrong. It wouldn’t be banned in some places if it was so well thought of. There are hundreds of get the badge in memes and even a social media account just to take the piss out of people who wear it, and dress their children in it!

Stone Island and football hooligans isn't something I'd link tbh

Sounds fine to me

Stone island was the label of choice for football firms in the 90s.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/12/2025 00:20

Is it one of these? I can't see anything wrong with it.

Unless you were having dinner somewhere like Le Manoir or the RAC, where entry would have been declined, I can't see the issue.

Men wear clothes.

Outfit implies that all separate pieces are part of a singular look. No man thinks about his appearance that deeply.

Clothes for a man going to a restaurant consists of... decent trousers, a shirt or nice sweater, and decent shoes. That's not an "outfit."

Wtf are you on about? Men have outfits. Men are fashion designers and stylists and models and a great many men think about their clothes that deeply.
My teenage sons have outfits.

winterbluess · 23/12/2025 00:31

I wouldn't be with anyone wearing stone island in the first place 😬

JaniceBattersby · 23/12/2025 00:46

Flowerslamp · 22/12/2025 23:31

I don't think you've been to a football match since Covid. There's way more trouble now than I'd seen since the 80s, and if your sons are wearing the badge it's because they want people to think they might be involved jn that, even if they're not.

Watching football live was becoming an old man's thing, with audiences increasing in age and clubs struggling to recruit young fans. Until recently hooligans were middleaged throwbacks from the 80s, but we're now seeing a new class of young hooligan who are wearing all the fashions of the 1980s firms.

Did you miss the bit where I said I’m a season ticket holder? I’m not sure which club you support but I’ve genuinely not seen a fight in years at my championship club and there are thousands of young fans and families.

I was also a fan from around the late 80s onwards and the fighting then was atrocious.

My kids stand with me at the games. Yes Stone Island has a bit of a reputation but it’s part of a wider culture than just hooliganism. My kids would shit themselves if anyone started on them.

I guess we must just support very different teams eh.

Thank God I don’t dress my kids according to social media memes! There are also lots of memes taking the piss out of dry robes and I don’t give a shit about them either.

My kids have zero idea about hooligan culture because they’ve never been a part of it and they’re too young to have seen any of it. They wear Stone Island because they see so many other men on the terraces wearing it and they like how it looks. It makes them feel a part of something.

People have such ludicrous ideas about football culture. I love it. I think it adds so much to my kids’ (and my) lives. It also means they see their entire extended family every week and have seen loads of different towns and cities they’d never have otherwise been to.

Pistachiocake · 23/12/2025 00:58

In the past, jeans and trainers generally weren't allowed according to smart casual codes, but things have changed, and most workplaces that once insisted on trousers and proper shoes are fine with them.
Now it's more about letting everyone just wear what they're happy with.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/12/2025 01:22

I can't believe most people think YABU and not one person has suggested to LTB. MN standards are slipping.

Mine does! He was planning what to wear for Christmas Day last night. He loves dressing up!

SeekingPerspective · 23/12/2025 08:57

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 22/12/2025 23:48

Honestly, yes. I am tired of people dressing like slobs, I think it reflects societal decline. Obviously fine for a casual joint, but trousers and a smart shirt and shoes would have been far better.

I guess we can agree to disagree. if he is clean and well groomed, then I really don't think that it means anything other than he is comfortable.

For me increase in places abused women can be safe is societal improvement, while voting for Reform is a societal decline. its about what people stand for, not really anything to do with how they dress. The two aspects are disconnected.

BeeHive909 · 23/12/2025 09:00

at nearly £400 for a bloody jumper I’d be wearing it to a meal also. It doesn’t look cheap or awful and ive never seen a so called football hooligan wearing one: I think the outfit sounds fine for a meal.

Sartre · 23/12/2025 09:19

Wouldn’t mind the outfit if it wasn’t Stone Island personally. DH frequently wears a nice roll neck jumper with jeans, although I don’t know what ‘smart’ trainers are, he’d always wear with Chelsea boots. As others have said, the brand carries a reputation.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 23/12/2025 09:22

Stone island is chavvy and definitely associated with football hooliganism for many people.

Comefromaway · 23/12/2025 09:25

Did he get the badge in?

even Julian Lloyd Webber (classical cellist) wears Stone Island these days. Some f the stuff is nice.

THisbackwithavengeance · 23/12/2025 09:26

I’ve never heard of Stone Island. But an all black outfit sounds inoffensive and generic. Did he get refused entry or kicked out the restaurant? If not, then it was ok.

mamajong · 23/12/2025 09:28

If theres no dress code then you can each where whatever you like. I would never tell a partner what to wear and would give short shrift to anyone telling me how to dress. Its fine not to like it, but its his body his choice unless there is a dress code imo

Tell us you dress badly without...etc etc

Plenty of men care about their appearance and think carefully about what they wear.

Another ridiculous, ill-informed generalisation from our resident Bloke Here, though, quelle surprise.

That might be your anecdotal experience but the stars say differently. My experience is the the lower leagues are seeing groups of very young fans looking for trouble.

Oh yeah I don’t know about that. Any other nice jumper could gone with but not the badge 😂

Though reminds me of a lady on tiktok asked her man to dress up in his most expensive stuff as they are going out. So he put his bike leathers because it was the most expensive outfit he owned haha
