To find DH’s outfit for dinner really unsuitable?

MarieJh · 22/12/2025 21:49

Meal out at a nice restaurant yesterday. DH wearing smart trainers, jeans and…a black Stone Island roll neck jumper. With badge on sleeve.

He says it’s smart/designer and suitable for the occasion.

I disagree. AIBU?

Just googled what it looks like and the badge on the arm like that is giving nazi vibes. Eww.

cramptramp · 22/12/2025 22:42

Certain places in my city won’t admit anyone wearing Stone Island. It really is synonymous with someone who thinks they are hard, and wants everyone around to know this.

Soonenough · 22/12/2025 22:46

Had to Google Stone Island . FFS Why would he even possess it . How old is he and ask him he is having a mid life crisis and wants people to know that he used to be hard.
I would ruin it in the wash .

Bungle2168 · 22/12/2025 22:49

Your husband is a scruffy bugger, but you know that already.

The jumper sounds smarter than trainers. I admit I’ve not heard of that brand but quick google tells me it is expensive. What is roadman?

Roadmen are the dudes who hang at the corner.

If I get it correctly now. They might rob you, they might not.

There's a TikTok meme about how many people from NYC or Baltimore or Philly or Florida man vs how many UK roadmen.

I don't get the trash on sneaks. Some sneaks are worth serious bank. People have collections. I'd rather wear sneaks than heels, for sure.

Bloozie · 22/12/2025 22:53

I mean Stone Island will forever be terracewear for me, but it's like £300. So probably cost more than your whole outfit, definitely something he'd consider 'posh'. It's a funny brand. Can be the height of chav and worn like a threat, or pretty slick. Your partner's outfit sounds on the slick end.

Calliopespa · 22/12/2025 22:55

MarieJh · 22/12/2025 21:53

Yes, the jumper was the issue.

A dress with heels.

To me it's the jeans and trainers that sound more the issue.

But we need pics to really give feedback op!

Smart jeans and faded, baggy at the knees jeans are two different things.

ETA just googled Stone Island and it's not really something that appeals to me. I'd say on balance YANBU.

Tiedyeegg · 22/12/2025 22:56

I would be mortified to be seen in public with any adult wearing stone island.
It’s synonymous with football hooligans and faux ‘hardman’ cokeheads in my area

Fidgety31 · 22/12/2025 23:00

So you dressed up and your husband dressed like a chav…. Yeah embarrassing! Especially the badge - his photo willl no doubt be circulating online at some point !

Delphiniumandlupins · 22/12/2025 23:03

I don't expect my DH to critique what I'm wearing unless I ask for his advice. Similarly my adult DC.

Caerulea · 22/12/2025 23:05

MarieJh · 22/12/2025 21:55

It certainly has a reputation, and not for positive reasons. Although as DH points out, it’s worn a lot more by ‘celebrities’ these days.

I mean yeah... If you count Tommy Cunty Robinson & his ilk. There's a whole thing with spotting the badge in the wild.

Couldn't have cared less if DH wore a jumper/sweater but sure as hell not one of those. It's really tarnished the brand

brightbevs · 22/12/2025 23:11

I live in a northern city and the doormen won’t let men in bars/clubs if they’re wearing stone island. I wouldn’t be happy at all!

jetlag92 · 22/12/2025 23:20

My husband would have worn a shirt.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. OP had dressed up a bit, wanted to make an occasion of it. Her chap couldn't be arsed. I loathe sitting in a nice restaurant seeing couples where the woman has made an effort but the man can't imagine showing her she's worth dressing up for. But then I'm a cantankerous old biddy who happens to have a partner who doesn't think it is either pretentious or uncomfortable to dress elegantly.

He had made an effort. He was wearing his best, most expensive clothes, and proud to show "the badge". It's a thing amongst a certain kind of man.

JaniceBattersby · 22/12/2025 23:26

My older teens (all non-violent high achievers!) wear Stone Island for the football. It’s not hooligan wear, it’s terrace wear, which is now a whole thing in itself. I quite like it tbh. A stoney, Levi’s and Adidas Speziales. Maybe a parka if it’s freezing but more often not.

Football hooligans don’t really exist at most clubs now tbh. It’s just groups of lads having a laugh with their mates supporting their team. There seems to be quite a bit of snobbery around it here, which is a shame. My kids get so much from having season tickets to our local club. They’re part of a whole community.

I also have a season ticket and although the chanting can be a bit close to the bone, it’s rare to see a fight these days.

As for your husband OP, I think he can wear what he wants and as long as it was clean and ironed I wouldn’t care at all.

I don't think you've been to a football match since Covid. There's way more trouble now than I'd seen since the 80s, and if your sons are wearing the badge it's because they want people to think they might be involved jn that, even if they're not.

Watching football live was becoming an old man's thing, with audiences increasing in age and clubs struggling to recruit young fans. Until recently hooligans were middleaged throwbacks from the 80s, but we're now seeing a new class of young hooligan who are wearing all the fashions of the 1980s firms.

I agree actually - the “stone island is only worn by football hooligans” trope is ridiculous.

And when I’m skiing in Val-d’isere amongst other places many people wear Moncler and I assure you they’re not chavs 😂 I’ve had my Moncler ski coat about 8 years and it cost £2K even then.

People who make sweeping statements like this probably have pre-conceived ideas based on the fact they see fakes being worn by road men types in the areas they live in. I live in a very affluent area and people do wear Moncler/Stone Island who are certainly not yobs.

I had to google stone island as I’ve never heard of it

Not to my taste tbh but not exactly bargain basement prices! A grand for a very meh looking jumper - no thanks

Yes I had to as well! Very meh - shocked that people would pay that much for something so dull.

IridiumSky · 22/12/2025 23:38

Bloke here. Not something I’d own, let alone wear.

And I’m someone who has no problem going out to a ‘nice’ restaurant in CyberPunk or Goth kit, accompanied by a wife with three inch spikes sticking out from her neck. 😳

localnotail · 22/12/2025 23:41

If he is wearing jeans and trainers, everything else is ok. Jeans and trainers are never "smart", even massively expensive ones.

ResusciAnnie · 22/12/2025 23:41

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/12/2025 21:59

I mean stone island is hardly cheap ... it does have a reputation amongst teens and football hooligans but I doubt may people in a restaurant would see more than a roll neck sweater. Unless followers of Mr Yaxley Lennon ...

Edited

All the Cool Wives are out tonight… in what world is any of this smart? 😂

Is this really a hill to die on?

Honestly, yes. I am tired of people dressing like slobs, I think it reflects societal decline. Obviously fine for a casual joint, but trousers and a smart shirt and shoes would have been far better.

winnerwinnertofudinner · 22/12/2025 23:56

ObliviousCoalmine · 22/12/2025 21:53

Was he expecting to encounter a group of Millwall fans and have a scrap?

😂

IfIHadAHeart · 22/12/2025 23:57

Was he also wearing a coat with goggles in the hood?

Stone Island is a complete ick for me. As is someone who can’t be arsed to make the effort for a nice restaurant.
