To find DH’s outfit for dinner really unsuitable?

Meal out at a nice restaurant yesterday. DH wearing smart trainers, jeans and…a black Stone Island roll neck jumper. With badge on sleeve.

He says it’s smart/designer and suitable for the occasion.

I disagree. AIBU?

@MarieJh Men don't wear "outfits."

GanninHyem · 22/12/2025 22:15

I mean, Burberry is a designer brand but was still chav favourite choice in the early 2000s

It's very much a thing with a certain type of bloke, generally the type whose idea of a fantastic Saturday night is getting tanked up, watching the football, doing a few lines and having a fight.

Well according to MN all that’s perfectly normal and acceptable behaviour apparently.
Few lines of coke? Everyone’s doing it! chill! It’s the new alchohol! I let my kids have a quick snort with Sunday lunch…

I know plenty of men who wear 'outfits'.

Not Stone Island, though.

My young adult kids say that Stone Island is a ‘roadman’ brand. I don’t really know exactly what that means, but it’s derogatory. My kids could also be being dickheads🤷🏼‍♀️

Haha. My kids use this expression too! Despite several attempted explanations, I still can't comprehend what a "roadman" actually looks like. I think they might have a fade haircut and a fringe and wear trackies 🤷‍♀️

Of course they do.

OP, was he there to offload some gear?

LakieLady · 22/12/2025 22:18

ObliviousCoalmine · 22/12/2025 21:53

Was he expecting to encounter a group of Millwall fans and have a scrap?

😂

Stone Island clothes always make me think of that vile scrote "Tommy Robinson", he often wears stuff with the Stone Island logo clearly visible.

Flowerslamp · 22/12/2025 22:18

Well, I wouldn't want to go to dinner (or anywhere) with anyone who identifies as a Stone Island wearer, but among those who do, I think that would be considered a good smart casual outfit.

horseplay12 · 22/12/2025 22:20

That is well dressed up for my DH, smarter than he wore for our wedding!!!!

rosyvalentine · 22/12/2025 22:20

Also, Stone Island is made by Moncler, which has a reputation as a drug dealer brand.

testotest · 22/12/2025 22:22

I voted YNBU because I would absolutely not be happy to go out with my DP wearing stone island either 🫣

SisterMaryImmaculate · 22/12/2025 22:23

Out for tea at 7, Millwall away at 7.45.

I didn't know that. Explains a lot, though!

Both are worn by the kind of bloke you'd cross the road to avoid, round my way at least. They're the modern Burberry baseball cap - a sure sign of a wrong 'un.

AtIusvue · 22/12/2025 22:24

Isn’t it a button on label?

I rem pubs used to tell those wearing SI to remove the labels before they were allowed inside.

He should have taken the label off.

CherrieTomaties · 22/12/2025 22:24

Surely he’d want to protect you incase it kicked off in the restaurant?

Vaguelyclassical · 22/12/2025 22:25

I think a lot of people are missing the point. OP had dressed up a bit, wanted to make an occasion of it. Her chap couldn't be arsed. I loathe sitting in a nice restaurant seeing couples where the woman has made an effort but the man can't imagine showing her she's worth dressing up for. But then I'm a cantankerous old biddy who happens to have a partner who doesn't think it is either pretentious or uncomfortable to dress elegantly.

Lucyccfc68 · 22/12/2025 22:26

Stone Island was a firm football terrace favourite about 30 years ago. Now it’s just worn by chavs, roadmen and wannabe hooligans. I’d be embarrassed if my other half was wearing it in this day and age.

gogomomo2 · 22/12/2025 22:28

The jumper sounds smarter than trainers. I admit I’ve not heard of that brand but quick google tells me it is expensive. What is roadman?

Crushed23 · 22/12/2025 22:29

Never heard of Stone Island, had to look it up. I’ve noticed that brands which are labelled ‘cheap’ or ‘chavvy’ on MN are always eye-wateringly expensive.

TheChosenTwo · 22/12/2025 22:31

Oh my god my dds were talking about some we know dressing like a road man and I just presumed they meant he was in high vis and industrious ‘worker’ type trousers and boots.
So it doesn’t mean that?? 🥴

anyway, jeans jumper and trainers - such a variant in all of those things but as long as he was clean and tidy I wouldn’t be upset about this.

XWKD · 22/12/2025 22:33

If he's already wearing jeans and trainers, does it matter?

Having a "Stone Island" label on show is no tackier than Hèrmes or Dior. All visible labels are the same. One says "roadman", the other says "drug dealer".

AngelicKaty · 22/12/2025 22:34

@MarieJh YANBU about the top OP, but YABU to give the jeans and trainers a free pass to a "nice" restaurant. How I wish dress codes still existed so I'd never have to sit near people dressed like your DH in nice restaurants anymore. 🙄

shuggles · 22/12/2025 22:35

TheSweetestCon · 22/12/2025 22:16

Not Stone Island, though.

Men wear clothes.

Outfit implies that all separate pieces are part of a singular look. No man thinks about his appearance that deeply.

Clothes for a man going to a restaurant consists of... decent trousers, a shirt or nice sweater, and decent shoes. That's not an "outfit."

Lucyccfc68 · 22/12/2025 22:36

Stone Island was an original label by Massimo Osti, along with CP Company and Left Hand. He designed and made some spectacular knitwear and jackets 30 years. He was ahead of his time when it came to using different fabrics and coatings in some of his iconic designs.

Shame Moncler got their hands on it. Celebs really started wearing it and now it’s just worn by chavs and roadmen and more often than not, they are just wearing fakes.

AllTheChaos · 22/12/2025 22:37

Well I’ve learned something reading this thread, I had never even heard of Stone Island! For a smart restaurant I wouldn’t expect jeans or trainers either.
