To find DH’s outfit for dinner really unsuitable?

Meal out at a nice restaurant yesterday. DH wearing smart trainers, jeans and…a black Stone Island roll neck jumper. With badge on sleeve.

He says it’s smart/designer and suitable for the occasion.

I disagree. AIBU?

Trainers? Jeans? Neither of these are "smart".

A decent pair of dark denim jeans with leather, non-sportswear trainers are completely appropriate for a meal in the vast majority of nice restaurants. Even most Mayfair restaurants are happy for you to wear jeans provided they're not ripped/distressed styles.

OP, I loathe Stone Island but smart jeans, trainers and a roll-neck jumper are perfectly OK to wear to a restaurant.

Stone Island is what football hooligans wear for a few pints and a punch up, isn't it? I wouldn't be happy with DH wearing that for any occasion, tbh.

Jeans and trainers can be fine even for a 'nice' restaurant (depending on the jeans, trainers and restaurant in question) but Stone Island, no thanks. Bad vibes.

I’ve just looked it up as I’m sadly behind the times these days and it looks like a smart, fitted rollneck that costs, checks again, £400 bloody pounds.

My, football hooligans have gone up in the world these days 😂😂😂

Most of them will be knock off. Seen some Dubious items with the badge on them.

A male should interpret "the situation" well enough to understand the correct dress code to lead into the event with his partner beside him, so she is comfortable in his presence without question.

IMHO, if you are questioning his etire then you are questioning the respect within your relationship.

Evaka · 23/12/2025 19:52

I'm just back from a high end restaurant where my brother (corporate attorney) was wearing jeans scruffy trainers. No one cared, noticed or had a worse experience for it.

Shedeboodinia · 23/12/2025 20:08

Stone Island to me is a brand for a certain type of 'geezer' when he is doing 'geezer' activities. Like watching football or shouting at the telly or drinking in the boozer with Danny Dyer.
But my DH wears some questionable things too. I had to put up with a diamonte encrusted tight t shirt he wore to a party with me once. He is 52. I was not impressed.

You can buy the badges and sew them on to clothing.

Wearing football hooligan attire to a nice restaurant is a no.

🤣 it’s not 1985

ObliviousCoalmine · 22/12/2025 21:53

Was he expecting to encounter a group of Millwall fans and have a scrap?

This is the first thing that came into my mind.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 24/12/2025 08:54

I wouldn’t know a Stone Island jumper from an M&S jumper, and only know it’s a roadman brand from teens in my life. As long as he looks smart I can’t say I’d be that bothered.

The Casuals (as they were known back in the day) were always expensively dressed. A lot of Burberry, which I seem to remember the company being not particularly happy about.

Sidebeforeself · 24/12/2025 09:01

I thank God that I have no idea what you are all going on about!

PInkyStarfish · 24/12/2025 11:13

Trainers, jeans and a roll neck jumper with a visible brand is suitable for Wetherspoons not a nice restaurant.

These things must be really regional. In London people would be dressed exactly like that in all the fanciest restaurants. I still wouldn't want to be with someone wearing Stone Island.

ManyPigeons · 24/12/2025 11:50

I don’t see the issue with wearing a roll neck jumper? The outfit sounds a bit ugly but not inappropriate just casual.

I mean young men don’t wear shirts and trousers anymore do they? My husband even wears jeans to work in finance.

Catza · 22/12/2025 21:54

So he is wearing trainers to a "nice" restaurant and you have a problem with his choice of a top?

And jeans

ManyPigeons · 24/12/2025 11:54

Ohjoyohbliss · 23/12/2025 18:22

I'm also a football season ticket holder and follow my local team and England. Stone Island is absolutely worn by football hooligans and wannabes, often linked with "limbs" and concourse culture. We see more at England games than local ones so perhaps that's why PP is unaware.

DH and I roll our eyes and mutter "Stone Island wanker" when one is acting like a knob in our vicinity. I wouldn't be at all surprised if most of them are fakes but, as they seem to have enough money to get coked up and throw expensive pints in the air instead of drinking them, maybe they can afford the real thing.

Tradies make £150+ an hour so I’m not surprised they can afford it. The lower paid manual workers of the past are usually higher earners nowadays.

Yep this never heard of the brand before but the Millwall/hooligan connotations are very amusing and are definitely painting a picture 😂🤣

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/12/2025 22:07

@SledgingSlide, the roadmen round our way wear 'high-vis' jackets except they don't seem to be 'high-vis'.
In fact we don't 'vis' them at all, which is probably why we still have a lot of pot-holes.

That's what I thought roadmen were all about too!

It would be too outing as literally noone else would wear such a t shirt 😂

Cherrytree86 · 27/12/2025 19:27

Outrageous.

he should have been in a tuxedo

Quincette · 27/12/2025 19:30

It’s a bit chavvy, but I’m sure he looked smart.
