To find DH’s outfit for dinner really unsuitable?

Meal out at a nice restaurant yesterday. DH wearing smart trainers, jeans and…a black Stone Island roll neck jumper. With badge on sleeve.

He says it’s smart/designer and suitable for the occasion.

I disagree. AIBU?

You can't wear a Stoney to dinner 😫Some jeans and trainers are definitely more smart-casual than casual so no issue with that. But Stone Island def isn't smart.

Why?

Clychaugog · 23/12/2025 10:43

Stone Island is the chosen brand of double hard football hooligans.

There's a tongue in cheek facebook page dedicated to it.

Can see why you might take issue but in the grand scale of male clothing crimes I'd say its fairly minor.

zingally · 23/12/2025 11:54

I had to google the brand, as I'd never heard of it. I wouldn't have known the association with chavs either.
Looks like a very basic, over-priced jumper.

I can't see the probably particularly. What restaurant was it?

Trainers are not suitable attire for a nice restaurant - but a lot of people don’t seem to make an effort these days.

My group of friends and I were laughing at all the middle aged men in stone island parka type jackets and mod Liam Gallagher-esque haircuts in a bar in Manchester on Saturday night 😂

To be fair... they probably developed that look in the 90's and stuck with it.

Hopefully they weren't laughing at your sartorial choices.

NoisyViewer · 23/12/2025 12:10

I went to the savoy & people where in there in Nike hoodies. If the restaurant doesn’t stipulate a strict dress code I think what he’s wearing is fine

SledgingSlide · 22/12/2025 21:54

My young adult kids say that Stone Island is a ‘roadman’ brand. I don’t really know exactly what that means, but it’s derogatory. My kids could also be being dickheads🤷🏼‍♀️

Your kids aren’t dickheads. I described it as coked up football fan last week.

I can't believe most people think YABU and not one person has suggested to LTB. MN standards are slipping.

Christmas spirit must be in. Post it new years and I’m sure they’ll be back trying to ruin the lives of others 😆

Wearing football hooligan attire to a nice restaurant is a no.

People wear The North Face to summit Everest. Does not mean mean the guy wearing TNF jacket at the pub is a mountain climber.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/12/2025 12:27

In case it kicks off in the restaurant 🤣

DialSquare · 23/12/2025 12:28

My older teens (all non-violent high achievers!) wear Stone Island for the football. It’s not hooligan wear, it’s terrace wear, which is now a whole thing in itself. I quite like it tbh. A stoney, Levi’s and Adidas Speziales. Maybe a parka if it’s freezing but more often not.

Football hooligans don’t really exist at most clubs now tbh. It’s just groups of lads having a laugh with their mates supporting their team. There seems to be quite a bit of snobbery around it here, which is a shame. My kids get so much from having season tickets to our local club. They’re part of a whole community.

I also have a season ticket and although the chanting can be a bit close to the bone, it’s rare to see a fight these days.

As for your husband OP, I think he can wear what he wants and as long as it was clean and ironed I wouldn’t care at all.

Agreed. I’ve been going to football since the 70s and was really in to the casual era clothes. Stone Island is a later version of that. My partner wears it a lot of and has done for years but we’re both working class season ticket holders so that just make us chavs.

Men wear clothes.

Outfit implies that all separate pieces are part of a singular look. No man thinks about his appearance that deeply.

Clothes for a man going to a restaurant consists of... decent trousers, a shirt or nice sweater, and decent shoes. That's not an "outfit."

Not true. Take for instance the blog (and now retail site) https://www.permanentstyle.com/

Not common, I would concede, but there are men who think about their clothes more deeply than you imagine.

Terrytheweasel · 23/12/2025 12:44

The brand is associated with football hooliganism and drug dealer types but it’s perfectly ok to wear to a nice restaurant. I’m assuming he had a coat over the top - what was that like?

PomPomSugar · 23/12/2025 13:10

My husband wears Stone Island as the cut of the clothes fit him well. Crucially though, he ALWAYS takes off the badge.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 23/12/2025 13:42

I hate anything with obvious logos or badges on, so it would be a 'no' from me.

shuggles · 23/12/2025 17:27

Minjou · 23/12/2025 00:30

Wtf are you on about? Men have outfits. Men are fashion designers and stylists and models and a great many men think about their clothes that deeply.
My teenage sons have outfits.

It's highly unusual. You're talking about a tiny % of the male population that's into fashion.

shuggles · 23/12/2025 17:28

@TheSweetestCon Tell us you dress badly without...etc etc

I ensure my clothes are clean and appropriate for the situation, which I think is enough.

Is not dressing fashionably the same as dressing "badly"? I'm not sure. What would dressing fashionably do to benefit me? Nothing. The only difference would be that I would have less money because I would be buying more clothes and more expensive clothes.

MandemChickenShop · 23/12/2025 17:31

Are you married to Pep?

You probably wouldn't call it fashion but both my DF and my DP are very particular a kit what they wear. Neither woukd wear Stone Island, but they do like good quality clothes.

DS2 is almost anti fashion, but he still know what he likes to wear and DS has a very fixed style.

I have teen DNephews, one is very into his clothes and the other like to be smart at all times.

For the men I know, keeping certain standards with their clothes is very important, even of they're not following trends.

I can't imagine getting worked up about something so trivial

exaltedwombat · 23/12/2025 18:12

Anything with a logo is naff in my book.

Yourlifeinyourhands · 23/12/2025 18:13

Sounds chavy.. were you at Wetherspoons?!

Ohjoyohbliss · 23/12/2025 18:22

I'm also a football season ticket holder and follow my local team and England. Stone Island is absolutely worn by football hooligans and wannabes, often linked with "limbs" and concourse culture. We see more at England games than local ones so perhaps that's why PP is unaware.

DH and I roll our eyes and mutter "Stone Island wanker" when one is acting like a knob in our vicinity. I wouldn't be at all surprised if most of them are fakes but, as they seem to have enough money to get coked up and throw expensive pints in the air instead of drinking them, maybe they can afford the real thing.

Plmnki · 23/12/2025 18:28

Sounds like he was dressed for a trip to Tesco, not a meal out. He should have worn smart shoes / trousers / collared shirt / blazer. He needs to make an effort.
