My husband just hit me in front of my 2 year old daughter.

I’m terrified for my daughter that she had to witness this …

Sending loads of hugs OP.

You must be so shaken up.

It's great that your sister is visiting but definitely take this time and the additional support to get in contact with the Police and a domestic violence charity. Can your sister extend her stay?

Hitting someone much less strong than yourself is not self defence. Being spat at (or in my case having one's face scratched) is an assault and provocation. But hitting someone hard is not self defence. It is indefensible and unforgivable violence.

Hitting someone less strong than yourself, whilst they are holding your two year old child, absolutely is despicable, but knowing how vile and manipulative men like this can be I’m just warning OP to be careful.
