To allow DD to buy this 'obscene' top?

DD14 just lost 10kg, went down from 62 to 52kg (she's pretty petite, only 160 cm tall) and wants to buy herself this top since she's now at a healthy weight for her age and was putting off buying new tops earlier because she didn't want them to stop fitting her: https://www.victoriassecret.co.uk/style/su826145/w96067

My sister thinks it's 'obscene' and a 'lingerie ad' as well as 'something she saw on social media' which is complete nonsense because she uses one of those granny flip phones and isn't on social media except discord, spotify and IRC (no idea if those count)

I don't see the problem honestly, there's nothing obscene about lingerie if you ask me in the 1st place, and VS has always made clothes

This is a photo of the top in the colour she wants it:

Eh??

it’s just a t shirt! How can that be described as lingerie?

I was expecting something SO different!

maggie2k · 14/11/2025 23:38

All it says is 'victoria's secret' and because she's petite it'll also be longish looking on her

She goes to a private girls school with no uniform so has been buying a lot of new clothes lately

Hardly obscene, though I hate VS with a passion.

mamagogo1 · 14/11/2025 23:39

Unfortunately Victoria’s Secret is synonymous with lingerie so it will have that connotation

My sister thinks the issue is because it says 'victoria's secret' in little rhine stones

🙄

BelleEpoque27 · 14/11/2025 23:39

I suppose you could argue that a 14 year old advertising a lingerie brand on her chest isn't ideal. I doubt my mum would have let me wear it in the 90s.

But no, it's not obscene. It's just a grey top with a logo. I wouldn't have a problem with it.

SocksAndTheCity · 14/11/2025 23:39

Is that the right link? I'm seeing a completely unremarkable grey t-shirt?

Arlanymor · 14/11/2025 23:39

It's a tee shirt advertising underwear, not sure why anyone would want to wear it.

Yep it just says 'victoria's secret' in little rhine stones on the chest area that's what my sister says the problem is

no idea either but times change i guess

It’s just a tshirt. VS is very popular with a lot of teens. I don’t see anything wrong with it.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 14/11/2025 23:42

Top is fine. Obviously people associate Victoria's Secret with underwear, so most people probably will make the connection if they read the writing on it. so it comes down to whether she or you care about anyone noticing that she has the name of an underwear shop on her top.

Yep guess so, I'm 46 so maybe not well-equipped to answer this post, sorry!

MonGrainDeSel · 14/11/2025 23:43

Of course it's not obscene. Maybe a bit tacky but which 14 year old hasn't selected something a bit tacky at times? It's a grey T shirt. DD also went to a school with no uniform, maybe the same one, and this T shirt would have been unremarkable.

Same! I was expecting full exposure of some nature!

OP I agree with PP. It's literally a t-shirt! Let DD buy it.

BellaBlister · 14/11/2025 23:44

It's your daughter's choice of top. Nothing to do with your sister!

I thought it was just a pretty boring normal top! She's been lately shopping a lot, landed herself a weekend job at a garden centre, brandy melville hollister and subdued seem to be her favourite and they all look pretty tacky to me honestly

It’s better than the FCUK ones everyone used to wear back in the day

ClementinesForChristmas · 14/11/2025 23:46

As someone old enough to remember the Playboy logo being fashionable, YANBU OP. it’s not exactly stylish, but let the teen think she’s being grown up and sexy (she’ll cringe in a few years).

I think the brand is marketing itself differently to teenagers. They sell affordable perfumes etc. Your sister is out of date.

Mummy2mybear · 14/11/2025 23:47

I was honestly expecting something that showed a lot of skin or had some inappropriate picture or quote on it I dont think this is obscene not my choice i will admit but I don't see a problem with it.

Are the perfumes good? I've been looking for some cheap nice perfumes
