To allow DD to buy this 'obscene' top?

DD14 just lost 10kg, went down from 62 to 52kg (she's pretty petite, only 160 cm tall) and wants to buy herself this top since she's now at a healthy weight for her age and was putting off buying new tops earlier because she didn't want them to stop fitting her: https://www.victoriassecret.co.uk/style/su826145/w96067

My sister thinks it's 'obscene' and a 'lingerie ad' as well as 'something she saw on social media' which is complete nonsense because she uses one of those granny flip phones and isn't on social media except discord, spotify and IRC (no idea if those count)

I don't see the problem honestly, there's nothing obscene about lingerie if you ask me in the 1st place, and VS has always made clothes

This is a photo of the top in the colour she wants it:

Not obscene but is tacky and a bit cringe. I think it looks like a PJ/loungewear top especially given the undies branding - is she sure it isn’t intended as such?

I don’t like VS as a brand and wouldn’t want my child wearing it, especially to school. But it’s not obscene.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 16/11/2025 10:52

I find it amazing on a parenting site that so few parents understand adolescence. It is normal, and possibly even desirable, to find your teen's taste in clothing baffling, or tacky, or cringe, in the same way that it is normal to be baffled by their slang. It's all part of the very healthy and important process of children separating from their parents and finding their own way as young adults.

StarlightLady · 16/11/2025 12:01

As well as lingerie VS sell costume jewellery, sweatshirts, hoodies, loungewear and dresses. Almost a modern take on Top Shop.

Sister is both interfering and bonkers!

justticketyboo · 16/11/2025 12:02
  1. What’s it got to do with your sister what your daughter is wearing?
  2. It’s just a t-shirt, nothing obscene imo, yes it’s a lingerie brand, but hey, no where near as bad as the French Connection T-Shirts (FCUK) from the early 2000’s that had some awful slogans on, which I rocked round wearing thinking I was the mutts nuts - admittedly a little older but only a couple of years 😂

Let her buy the t-shirt !!

RisenWhine · 16/11/2025 15:02

I don’t think it’s obscene. It only looks ‘sexy’ on the model because she’s wearing low rise trousers where you can almost see where babies come from, I’m assuming you don’t like DD wear ultra low rise trousers/jeans. In which case, this is just a T-shirt.

ECT22 · 16/11/2025 15:19

I wouldn’t be delighted - Victoria’s Secret is most famous for its shows which celebrate unrealistic body image and objectify women sexually. By wearing the tee, naturally your dd is buying into that brand. But then again, in the 90s I wore:

FCUK tee with ‘naked underneath’ written on it
Playboy bunny tee
tee with a handprint on each boob

So who am I to judge?!

DetectiveDouche · 16/11/2025 17:04

If you sister thinks that T-shirt is in any way "obscene" than she has led a very sheltered life 🤔. It's a T-shirt.. it's fine. And the logo does not equate to anything obscene either. Ignore the sister

Arlanymor · 14/11/2025 23:39

It's a tee shirt advertising underwear, not sure why anyone would want to wear it.

It’s a t shirt advertising a brand that sells, amongst other things, underwear. M&S sell underwear and often have lingerie in the window…how would you feel about an M&S t shirt?

I loved my FC tees back in the 90s. I had 'Bristol cities' and another that said 'kiss me quick, fcuk me slowly'.

OP, I'm a bit baffled that a t-shirt your daughter is considering buying is even a topic of conversation with your sister!

I had a t-shirt with an image and the words "Scent of a Woman" on it.

I had it for about three YEARS before I realised the woman on the front wasn't smoking, she was smelling her own fingers Grin.

I also had one that said Slow FCUK on it. Caused a scandal in a bar in Vermont once!

FancyHelper · 16/11/2025 20:51

I think it’s quite cute. Better than FCUK ones or others I ve seen lately

maggie2k · 14/11/2025 23:48

Are the perfumes good? I've been looking for some cheap nice perfumes

Not related to your original post but Zara perfumes are amazing, really long lasting and cheap. I smelt a couple of work colleagues wearing them recently and and have since bought myself 3 different ones and have another on my Xmas list! Totally converted.

re: your original post, I’m 54 and see nothing wrong with the top at all. I no longer associate Victoria’s Secret with only underwear - (lots of which is lovely by the way and not all overly sexy - some of my DD’s first bras came from
there!) but with the other clothing, accessories and beauty products they also now sell. Let her buy the top!

RazorsAtDawn · 17/11/2025 22:51

Just like fcuk was the 'in' t-shirt back in my day. Don't see an issue.

MyIvyGrows · 18/11/2025 07:27

VS do brilliant pants, the seamless ones from Pink are so comfortable!

notacooldad · 18/11/2025 09:17

I font even see it the same as FCUK. That logo was designed to be controversial and get people talking with the faux naivety of ' oh it stands for French Connection! Victoria Secrets is just a brand logo. Its hardly Anne Summers.

CurlewKate · 18/11/2025 09:26

Just hate the sexualization of children-even in a minor way like this. There are loads of t shirts in the world.

As someone old enough to remember the Playboy logo being fashionable, YANBU OP. it’s not exactly stylish, but let the teen think she’s being grown up and sexy (she’ll cringe in a few years).

Ditto!!!! I wore some pretty toe curling stuff at 14. Playboy everything.

OldieButBaddie · 18/11/2025 10:17

Jeez if you think that's obscene wait til she gets into Pretty Little Thing and tries to go out looking like a hooker!

NavyTurtle · 18/11/2025 10:20

maggie2k · 14/11/2025 23:41

Yep it just says 'victoria's secret' in little rhine stones on the chest area that's what my sister says the problem is

What on earth has it got to do with your sister. Tell to butt out. Unless she is a constant bully in your life, then I would kick her in the shins!!!!

sweetpickle2 · 18/11/2025 11:25

Another one who had a 'FCUK like bunnies' tee when I was 15, much to my mother's chagrin.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that tee at all, but I also think starting to push boundaries is a rite of passage. Your sister needs to unclench.

TheaBrandt1 · 18/11/2025 15:01

Surely the whole point of teenage girls outfits is that their elders disapprove? Think there were similar themes in the Anne of Green Gables books with shocking ribbons and calicos.

I get that. But there’s a word for mother’s sister disapproving, it’s called intererence.

TinyCottageGirl · 18/11/2025 15:59

Your sister needs to grow up, its a t shirt and most people wont even be able to read it clearly. She will mostly be covered up due to the weather anyway.
I can't believe this is even a question!

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/11/2025 16:26

An unremarkable tee shirt, is what I am seeing here. A few rhinestones stones - so what? Your sis is batshit.

I agree with everything you’re saying but I also think posters are also forgetting the VS PINK branded joggers/leggings trend in the ‘00 - ‘10s that everyone used to wear. VS branded clothes has been a teenage girl stable for decades, and most of their bra’s are very plain and boring.
