To allow DD to buy this 'obscene' top?

DD14 just lost 10kg, went down from 62 to 52kg (she's pretty petite, only 160 cm tall) and wants to buy herself this top since she's now at a healthy weight for her age and was putting off buying new tops earlier because she didn't want them to stop fitting her: https://www.victoriassecret.co.uk/style/su826145/w96067

My sister thinks it's 'obscene' and a 'lingerie ad' as well as 'something she saw on social media' which is complete nonsense because she uses one of those granny flip phones and isn't on social media except discord, spotify and IRC (no idea if those count)

I don't see the problem honestly, there's nothing obscene about lingerie if you ask me in the 1st place, and VS has always made clothes

This is a photo of the top in the colour she wants it:

So.. Victoria’s Secret is a lingerie brand. Overpriced and made of polyester but ultimately just… underwear. Like wearing a top saying La Senza back in the day, except with better marketing? We do all in fact wear underwear, I’m not sure why the idea is obscene.

At 14 in the 90s my three favourite tops were: a bright red top with a glittery silver playboy bunny on it, a black top with FCUK on the front, and a black top which had in very small text over the boobs “if you can read this, you’re standing too close. Fuck off”.

This is very tame comparatively; but I would warn her that the school might not like it in which case she can’t wear it and the money might be wasted.

When I was 17 I used to wear a bright yellow, fairly loose crop top that I bought in Spain with the words "Sugar Baby Doll" on it - and it was split down both sides low enough to reveal my bra. It was sooo tacky and awful, but I loved that top.

OPs daughter's taste looks quite tame in comparison.

Do you honestly need the views of MN on this?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/11/2025 00:36

When my DD was 14-15yo she told me everyone bought things from VS Pink , I was "Hell No" but apparently , VSPink was different as it was aimed at teens .

She did get some really nice things - pyjamas, TShirts , pants .Nothing in there was sordid . Expensive yes .
It felt a bit weird as they keep them in chest of drawers so you feel like you;re rifling through someone's knicker drawer ShockThe sales staff were always really nice and very helpful

Roll on a few years DD is 23 and d'you know , she still has a couple of pairs of the pants . ( I do say I think you need to replace these but the quality was great )

miniaturepixieonacid · 15/11/2025 00:42

Not what I was expecting to see at all, that is totally fine.

Teens like to raise eyebrows with their clothing in some way or other. That's never going to change.

The first time my mum let my sister and me go proper city shopping (we lived rurally) we got the train to Aflex Palace in Manchester aged 14 and 16. When we came home my sister was wearing a new top that read 'I'm not a Bitch, I'm The Bitch and it's Miss Bitch to you.' and I was wearing one that said 'This is my antisocial, f**k the world, scary black t-shirt.' We had other similar monstrosities. Parents were horrified. We grew out of it.

SchrodingersKoala · 15/11/2025 00:45

It looks like a pj top, not something I'd wear outside the house. It isn't obscene though, just a plain old grey t-shirt.

As someone old enough to remember the Playboy logo being fashionable, YANBU OP. it’s not exactly stylish, but let the teen think she’s being grown up and sexy (she’ll cringe in a few years).

Ohh, that brought a flashback of tanning and putting a little Playboy Bunny sticker on to judge my tanness. Thankfully I didn't get super into tanning but still cringe at the thought.

maggie2k · 14/11/2025 23:38

All it says is 'victoria's secret' and because she's petite it'll also be longish looking on her

She goes to a private girls school with no uniform so has been buying a lot of new clothes lately

Oh I’m dead against schools that are non uniform.
Don’t ask me why but I guess it’s the amount of thought and worry on what to wear each day for school and the competitive element.

whatisthegoddamnholdup · 15/11/2025 01:04

There is nothing remotely wrong with this top. Your sister is being really ridiculous.

AspiringChatBot · 15/11/2025 01:16

Is your sister maybe referring to the accusations against Victoria's Secret founder and until recently CEO (he stepped down due to the controversy but remains executive chair of the Board of Directors) Les Wexner, who was an associate of Jeffrey Epstein? Wexner owned a whole set of brands including Bath & Body Works, La Senza, Henri Bendel, and CO Bigelow, but VS was especially highlighted and impacted as Wexner allegedly allowed Epstein to act as a modeling scout for the brand in order to procure underage girls for sex trafficking. Despite Wexner's stepping out of an active role (of course, he still profits) and the fact that he cut ties with Epstein in 2007 and later sued him for mismanagement of funds, VS does still have a bit of a negative (and definitely downmarket) reputation as a result.

@mnhq please remove the post I put above. I was quoting something from a Tshirt logo and meant no offence! Sorry! I tried to report it but as the post was greyed out it wasn't allowed. #mortified

GinaandGin · 15/11/2025 01:18

Oh please
Your sister sounds like a right prude and fuss pot
I am old enough to remember the "johnston baddie powder" t shirts and the fcuk tops
I had a "not so innocent " t shirt I got from tip shop when I was around 15
Vs do a pink range which is athletic leisure for girls.. I bet your sister would have an issue with that too ?

QuickPeachPoet · 15/11/2025 01:22

maggie2k · 14/11/2025 23:39

My sister thinks the issue is because it says 'victoria's secret' in little rhine stones

she needs to stop being so prissy. I was expecting some skimpy barely there crop top. Especially as she is petite as long as she doesn't have flesh on show at school it's fine.
Looks a bit like a pyjama top or something you would wear to do yoga but it is fine.
Well done to DD on her weight loss!

PalePinkPeony · 15/11/2025 01:23

The brand sells all sorts- perfumes, body wash, dressing gowns, pj’s. It’s just a brand. It’s not like she’s going out wearing a bra triangle top!
Its just a T-shirt

A glance at the landing page of their website will tell you all you need to know.

it's just lingerie? it's a normal part of life?

AliceMcK · 15/11/2025 01:39

It’s a T-shirt with a brand logo nothing more, the style is extremely popular with teens as are the Victoria secret perfumes and body sprays.

i couldn’t get worked up over it, in fact I’m surprised my 13 yo hasn’t asked me for it.

TeaAndTattoos · 15/11/2025 01:44

The way your sister described it I was expecting something else entirely that’s just a cropped t-shirt that all the teenagers are wearing at the minute. If she wants it let her have it.

maralagagirl · 15/11/2025 01:48

There are lots of other grey t-shirts with rhinestone patterns. I'd be buying one of them, but I've never been a a fan of paying a fortune to advertise a brand for free. If she wants it buy it though.Brett Blundy will be grateful.

Lingerie has different purposes at different stages of life.

maralagagirl · 15/11/2025 01:51

Also, as an Australian, I apologise for him and Rupert Murdoch. There's not many of us but I'm getting bored with us! Is there anywhere else you could shop. He lives in Monaco to avoid tax apparently. There must be somewhere else in the UK.

Geranium1984 · 15/11/2025 01:53

Ive seen local teenagers wearing a lot lot worse! Just a T shirt, you can only read the slogan very close up. They also sell PJs, so perphas people will think it's a PJ top :)

SassyCow · 15/11/2025 01:53

Me personally I don't see the issue. When I read the title I was expecting something completely different.

Doobedobe · 15/11/2025 01:55

No issue with the top.
But the brand, google 'victorias secret brand owner, toxic misogyny and links to Jeffrey Epstein.
I wouldnt wear anything by that brand.
Teach her to support brands that align with her values.

IridiumSky · 15/11/2025 01:58

To read obscenity into an unremarkable T-shirt is creepy.
