I think I heard on radio last week that knife crime has fallen since the last GE.

xanthomelana · 08/11/2025 12:31

People will soon be along to say knife crime has fallen. I agree something needs to be done about it.

It has 🤷‍♀️

bridgetreilly · 08/11/2025 12:33

Where is the sudden emergency?

To think a National Emergency should be called by Starmer?

Just googled it. 5% down from the previous year in the year ending June 2025. But I'm not sure why people should let facts get in the way of their righteous indignation.

Well yes, but to be fair, the absolute shit show that’s the Labour Government is making it very bloody easy for term, isn’t it?

WalkDontWalk · 08/11/2025 12:34

Google it….

“In the year ending June 2025, there was a 5% drop in recorded knife crime offences in England and Wales. The year ending March 2025 saw a 1.2% decrease in knife-related serious violent offences compared to the previous year. Hospital admissions for knife assaults in England and Wales also fell by 10%.”

ShesTheAlbatross · 08/11/2025 12:35

Do people genuinely believe that this is a sudden and unprecedented increase in stabbings?
Hospital figures for assaults with knives or sharp objects are at their lowest since 2012, when the ONS started recording these figures.

ETA - obviously that doesn’t mean it’s fine. I’m just not buying the sudden need to urgently address this “emergency” from people who didn’t want to urgently address the emergency last year, or the year before that, or the year before that.

FactCheck: levels of knife and violent crime are falling, figures show

The Huntingdon train attack is the latest high-profile incident to place a spotlight on violent crime, and knife crime specifically. But there doesn't seem to have been a recent surge in violent crimes. In fact, quite the opposite.

Where is the sudden emergency?

You think 53000 “selected” knife crime incidents per year is remotely acceptable?!?! Emergency should have been called years ago according to your graph, IMO.

Pedallleur · 08/11/2025 12:36

What about domestic violence and the murders of women and girls, should that not be a National Emergency?

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/11/2025 12:30

Really? That surprises me. We are a small market town in the midlands, just this week two gangs of youths have been fighting with knives in the town centre, according to gossip this is a follow on to a stabbing at the town Fair last month.
And a man was nearly kidnapped from his house by three other masked men with machetes…I’ve never known anything like it round here. The town has doubled in size in the last 10/15 years though, endless house building has totally changed the atmosphere. The small place where everyone knew everyone is long gone.

She hasn’t suggested that. Just that it’s not a “sudden” emergency. It’s been an issue for quite some time, as the graph shows.

I didn’t say it was acceptable. I just don’t think that a relatively steady state for at least the last five years is cause for a state of emergency.

TopPocketFind · 08/11/2025 12:38

What would you like the government to do @Netcurtainnelly ?

Lockdown the country and bring in the army?

Pedallleur · 08/11/2025 12:38

There is a common denominator in all this - men! maybe men/boys are the National Emergency. just an observation.

SoloSofa24 · 08/11/2025 12:38

Violent crime in the UK peaked in the mid-90s (Conservative government), fell under the last Labour government, and started rising again under the last Conservative government, but is still lower than the 80s/90s.

Do you think possibly austerity and massive under-investment in mental health services, youth services, Sure Start programmes etc might possibly have something to do with it, OP? Or are you just parroting Farage/GB news/Daily Express talking points, and it must all be to do with 'illegals'?

Edited

I did and it said a 1% drop and that’s only recorded incidents. They’ve also excluded Greater Manchester Police because they under reported knife crime.

It's got worse.

OP posts:
WunTooThree · 08/11/2025 12:40

What exactly do you think should be done? What would a National Emergency to tackle knife crime look like?

It is already illegal to carry a knife in public, and also stab people. There will always be people who ignore that and carry knives and stab people.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/11/2025 12:41

Netcurtainnelly · 08/11/2025 12:40

No, it hasn’t. Check ONS.

But just to humour you, what do you believe Starmer should be doing? What does this 'emergency' look like in your eyes?
