It's got worse.

What's the evidence for that? The stats I've seen suggest it has actually got better.

Pedallleur · 08/11/2025 12:38

There is a common denominator in all this - men! maybe men/boys are the National Emergency. just an observation.

Good take on it.

It's got worse.

Have you got any data to back up that assertion? Or are you just going on vibes from what you see online?

It's got worse.

No, it hasn’t.

mamagogo1 · 08/11/2025 12:43

Social media has a lot to answer for, not to mention the sensationist press. You wouldn’t want facts to get in the way of a story would you!

knife crime is actually down. It’s sad anyone is hurt by weapons but it’s actually pretty steady on numbers (see chart posted above). What there is, is an epidemic of non fact checked reporting!

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 08/11/2025 12:44

Do you consume a lot of content on Twitter, OP?

It's the right wing grifters wanting us in a permanent state of fear that are the main problem

Bagsintheboot · 08/11/2025 12:45

Ok OP.

What does this national emergency look like, in your mind?

What new rules or laws does it involve?

How will they be enforced?

How long will it go on for?

How will it be funded?

Why now, why not pre-Covid when knife crime was higher?

Can you provide quantitative evidence that knife crime is significantly worse now than last year?

Netcurtainnelly · 08/11/2025 12:47

A day or two dosent go past without hearing about a stabbing.

You hear about stabbings in schools, maybe only occasionally but at one time it would have been unheard of for a pupil or teacher to be stabbed in school.

MrsMurphyIWish · 08/11/2025 12:48

I agree OP, but unsure what an emergency declaration would look like or what can be done. In my area we have knife amnesties and bins but there is a lack of police presence.

Cant dispute the facts however I think a lot of posters on this thread aren’t touched by knife crime. I live in a high knife crime area and we have many stabbings and in the last year, 3 murders less than half a mile of my house.

LadyKenya · 08/11/2025 12:49

I think that you will be in for a long wait, from the OP.

You want to call a national emergency on things you've heard about?

There are multiple people on this thread telling you statistically you are wrong. Why are you not hearing them?

mumofonetwo · 08/11/2025 12:52

I assume you’re just going to ignore all the data showing that stabbing have been fewer in the past year?

Because we have news pumped into our lives 24/7.

Pre-internet, this stabbing would have had a few sentence mentioned in a paper, more in the local paper of where the incident happened. Otherwise you would have never had heard about it.

bookworm14 · 08/11/2025 12:54

Philip Lawrence was stabbed to death at a school in 1995.

MathsTeacherandLoveit · 08/11/2025 12:55

Let's increase police numbers so that they are more visible.
Let's pay for that with increased taxes.

Cue everyone going ape shit because they are having to pay more taxes

Yes, unfortunately so.
The whole 'alpha male' and red pill theory bros are making it a horrible place.
Obviously there are, and always have been some burgeoning background issues with gangs and territories, but men seem angrier now. People feel free to lash out either verbally or physically. And when I say people, I mean men.

OK, so you're hearing about it more. Probably because of social media/24 hour news etc. Plus confirmation bias may heighten your awareness of reports when you hear them.

Now that you've seen the actual stats that show that knife crime is actually getting better, do you feel reassured that there is no national emergency after all?

Jesus. This is the huge flaw in a system
of representative democracy.

Another Stabbing, its daily now.

Country's been allowed to get out of hand.
Should Starmer address it?

What would a National Emergency entail, regarding knife crime?

What practical steps would you advise?

You've just said it. "A day or 2 doesn't go past without hearing about a stabbing", "at one time it would've been unheard of"...
Ask yourself why all of a sudden "we hear about it". What agenda do you think the "storytellers" are pushing?

But knives became or have become more freely available. look at the Southport killer story. Its become a 'thing' if you read the news that boys are carrying knives but I remember as a student in Mcr in the 80s of machete wielding villains taking students to cash points to steal from them. that was a city centre and was prob replicated in all the big cities. What about guns? They seem to be available to those who seek them and drug use, should that not be a National Emergency? Bet there are more drug users in your community than knife carriers
