Why are the Arab countries tougher on Hamas than we are in the UK?

Qatar, Saudi and Egypt are putting increasing pressure on Hamas to disarm and accept a ceasefire to end the war.

Meanwhile Starmer is giving Hamas exactly what they want, to be recognised with a state. Why is the UK so weak? Where are our sanctions or pressure on Hamas? Why is it down to the Arab states only to actually try to fix this mess by removing Hamas?

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt join calls for Hamas to disarm and exit Gaza to end war with Israel

Arab nations — including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt — joined calls Tuesday for Hamas to disarm and give up its grip on Gaza to end the 21-month war.

And for what’s its worth, I want a two state solution. But obviously not whilst Hamas is still in power.

Starmer isn't recognising Hamas as a state, he is recognising Palestine.

Frankly if you can't see the difference then you shouldn't be commenting

Yes whilst it’s still run by Hamas. It means the Uk will be recognising Hamas as the government of Palestine.

So you want the Palestinians to choose a new government whilst starving to death?

Or to have a new government forced on them by an occupying army?

Jennps · 30/07/2025 08:13

Let’s not kid ourselves that this is some kind of good vs evil battle. These things are always planned and orchestrated.

Israel doesn’t like Hamas. Hamas are basically permanent resident guests in Qatar. Qatar is the west’s biggest bestie in the Middle East, so much so that it gave Trump a private jet as a gift and one half the real estate in western capitals.

Go figure.

I think it’s because you have to assume the people are voting Hamas in because their policy aim is to be recognised as a state.

It’s a bit like here with reform. Most people don’t want to vote for them. But if they are the only people who will sort immigration then it’s looking increasingly like that’s how they will vote.

notimagain · 30/07/2025 08:18

Voting? Hamas?

No. Hamas only runs part of the Palestinian territory. You do realise that don’t you? Also you can recognise a state but reject the legitimacy of the government.

Israel doesn't like Hamas? Should they be liking the murderous scum, who carried out a bloody massacre on 7/10?

This.

Plus the post a out voting in a new government while starving to death.

Dangermoo · 30/07/2025 08:24

France has recognised Qatar billions. The hard left will be putting pressure on Starmer to follow suit, so another hunt to find his balls, in resisting. As for arab countries fixing things - they broke those things in the first place.

Correct. The anti semitism is extremely strong on this site, though, they will pretty much jump through any hoop to ignore the simple reality that the murdering, raping, baby slaughterers of Hamas are lying, disgusting filth who could have ended the war they started at any point at all by simply surrendering and handing over the hostages.

The Palestianis, who aren't starving to death, will do all the electing. Namely, the men.

Expect to be met with the latest bout of your conflating antisemitism with criticising Israel. However, Islamophobia accusations were recently used to shut down debate elsewhere. This was when discussing Islamic fundamentalists.

TaupeLemur · 30/07/2025 08:28

Palestine is being recognised as a state - maybe. Palestine. So you have your facts wrong OP.
Hamas is a terrorist organisation, according to the UK government. So they aren’t less tough than others, like Qatar etc. and those countries actually have influence in the region. We supply Israel with weapons, why the F would Hamas care about what the U.K. thinks? Arab nations close to Palestine are in a position to influence AND to help with aid, recovery, and so on.

JackGrealishsBobbySocks · 30/07/2025 08:30

It's not worth seriously listening to anything said by Starmer. He'll say something else tomorrow.

I don't think it's a good look for us to make ultimatums to anyone. I think it only underscores how irrelevant the UK is on the world stage these days. Imagine Botswana saying "Georgia must stop eating dill or we will recognise the existence of Abkhazia." There would be general bafflement and mockery- the same as the UK gets now every time it wades in to foreign conflicts, particularlhly when domestically it is unravelling and edging closer to civil war.

We all know Starmer will just do what America tells him to do anyway. Same as every other recent PM.

EasternStandard · 30/07/2025 08:39

Yes Qatar etc are putting more pressure on Hamas than we are. Starmer is the only one when you look at Macron’s statement too to do this.

TaupeLemur · 30/07/2025 08:41

‘Expect to be met with the latest bout of your conflating antisemitism with criticising Israel.’

this ridiculous notion that you can’t criticise Israel for anything INCLUDING committing war crimes and genocide because it antisemitic isn’t working anymore.
Criticising Iran and their batshit actions or regime isn’t anti-Muslim - although you could argue that their people have a lot less agency than some I suppose.
Recognising the Palestinian state is long overdue.

KimberleyClark · 30/07/2025 08:42

Israel supported Hamas in the 70s as a divide and rule tactic, to weaken the PLO. I was going to link an article about this from The Times of Israel but Google seems to have blocked their website.

Longingdreamer · 30/07/2025 08:44

Arab countries recognise Hamas as the terrorists that they are, and are also afraid of the risk to their own countries.

Here in the UK people are incredibly misinformed.

Gaza needs freeing from Hamas, who are terrorists. There will never be peace while Hamas is in power.

EasternStandard · 30/07/2025 08:39

Again - the idea that Hamas, who the West publicly call terrorist - would give a damn about what the U.K. or France or anyone else think when we supply Israel with the weapons being used in a genocide is laughable.
It’s Israel we should be trying to influence. I doubt anyone in Palestine has much respect for the UK given its colonial fuck up over the country to begin with.
I do think U.K. people seriously over estimate their ‘influence’ in the world in general and underestimate the resentment & political messes that the UK colonial past has left in its wake.

I can’t say I’ve posted Starmer has a lot of influence. Still he’s an outlier amongst Qatar, Saudi Arabia etc and France.

Interesting how th adults don’t look like they are starving. During the Nazi persecution of the Jews it was the adults that were all skin and bones.
