There are so many wonderful examples of these, please share your favourites. Bonus points for links.

I remember one when OP was annoyed if the cost of children's birthday gifts weren't higher than the cost of hosting the party per child.

And the classic from a few weeks ago when OP thought it was ok to block the shared driveway and thought their neighbour who lived at the end was the unreasonable one.

I bet there are better ones out there though...

The one where OP invited a romantic interest on holiday, realised she didn’t like him that way and then went AWOL, then booked him a flight home the same evening and he had no idea what he had done wrong 😂

The stepmom that thought it was fine that her kids get better Xmas pressies than her step kids. Who wouldn't share any of her VAST personal wealth with her husband or blended family.

Yes that was something else …
she was absolutely steadfast unbreakable iirc …

The one a few months back where an ex teacher who came across an ex pupil in the care home her husband was in who was rude to her. It transpired the op had been really abusive as a teacher but wanted to know if she should report the carer for being rude but got 99% piled on for being abusive when she was a teacher. I was the first one to reply

God yes, that was proper bat shizzle. The ex teacher admitted to properly beating children.

The woman who got angry everytime her husband expresses an emotion because she can “feel it”

Oh my gosh, that was the one where people asked her what she did all day and she was like, "I pet the cat, I looked at the flowers, I took a breath..." 😂

It turns up every now and again 😂 but the stereotypical format is:

  • OP (probably breastfeeding so ravenous) goes to IL with her DH and baby
  • IL serve dinner and dish up for everyone
  • IL gives OP tiny tiny portion size of meal, but gives DH a HUGE portion aka the "penis portion" because he is a MAN so needs more food
  • OP annoyed and hangry, posts on mumsnet with or without making a trip to McD on the way home from IL 😂

My late MIL was like that, she once harangued a waitress because the young woman on the next table had a bigger Yorkshire pudding than OH, she'd already complained because they had the same amount of beef as he had. No telling her that they were paying the same for their meals, a man should get more! If I cooked something like pork chops she would cut some off her chop and pass it to him then look at me expecting me to do the same, without success. He absolutely hated her doing this and got really annoyed at me when I asked if he wanted a man-sized portion!

The MIL with the picture of the baby in the HEART shaped frame 🙄

The one where a woman on Youtube posted photos of herself and a much younger and more attractive Youtuber who looked nothing like her and said they were nearly identical, then claimed not to be the older woman.

It was very rough on Anne, going through puberty, to have to share with a middle-aged man (and probably embarrassing for Fritz too). Since Mr and Mrs Frank already had their privacy compromised by sharing with Margot, I agree that arrangement would have made sense

I think so too.

ChrisMartinsKisskam · 30/07/2025 23:32

The Mexican house thief

op had a holiday home im Mexico and it turned out that friend she had hosted in the past just went there for a holiday when the op
was back in the uk

OP didn’t know they were at her holiday home

Mexican house thief didn’t ask to stay
and I can’t remember how they got caught out

But I think they had done it a few times

The one currently going on about till receipts. The OP is getting a bit het up!

Agree about this one!!

My absolute favourite that sticks in my mind, is the woman about this time last year, who was getting upset because her son was organising a Halloween party for his friends and siblings. So all the guests were similar age to her son and his wife. And the poster was really upset that she hadn’t been invited and was asking “AIBU if I just turn up anyway?” Every single poster said along the lines of no, don’t, you’re not invited, let your son and his wife just have their party and enjoy it.
But she just WASNT having it and kept telling us why she felt it was best if she just went along. didn’t take on board a word of advice anyone asked. Also it was generally funny that a Halloween party was being organised SO far in advance.

Nothing beats penis beaker or screaming at art but I did enjoy the one with CF Barbara stealing the allotment from her new neighbours. Think another neighbour was trying to steal a garage too. OP was completely reasonable but the audacity of everyone in the houses around her was just amazing.

I actually didn't like the sound of the op and felt a bit sorry for Barbara.

Threesome went wrong!
He wanted a threesome and she ended up having all the fun with the other woman and ended her relationship in the end I think!

cassandre · 30/07/2025 23:52

One I remember is from many years ago and I can't find it. Also, I think it was on the property/DIY threads instead of AIBU. However, it stuck in my memory because the poster was so certain she was right.

She was a law student who had recently bought a house, and there was a small enclosed passage between the houses that was jointly owned by her and the next-door neighbour. So quite unusual circumstances really. She said that because the neighbour didn't use the passage, she planned to claim it and make it into an additional room in her own house. The justification for this was that she and her partner needed the extra space more than the neighbour did.

Everyone kept telling her that she couldn't just claim a shared space as her own and renovate it. She kept saying that as a law student, she was sure this was legally possible.

As the thread continued it emerged that the house was listed (so the possibility of making changes to it would be legally tricky anyway) and that the neighbour herself was a solicitor or barrister (I can't remember the details).

The OP wrote a letter to the neighbour informing her of her plans, and the neighbour said no. The OP persisted, and the neighbour told her in legal language and in no uncertain terms to piss off.

Everyone on the thread was on the side of the neighbour, but the OP was aghast at the neighbour for being so unsympathetic to her plight of needing more space. She was sure that her plan was eminently reasonable and that she would prevail.
