Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

Sorry I've not seen anything about this. Where are people putting their heating on?

My heating won't be going on until November at the earliest!

EleanorReally · 07/06/2025 07:00

it was cold last night but no way would i put the heating on in June

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 07:06

I don't put my heating on. It comes on when the thermostat dips below 20 degrees regardless of the time of year. I wear jumpers when it is cold and have been wearing them for the last week.

However, I will not be a martyr to the cold and don't use a calendar to decide when the heating goes on. Thermostats are great inventions.

JockyWilsonsaid · 07/06/2025 07:09

I put the heating on because I was cold, I'm an adult and can make that decision and I'm the one who pays the bills. I don't see why I should sit bundled up (I was already wearing a vest and a sweatshirt) when I can put the heating on for a couple of hours.

Poopeepoopee · 07/06/2025 07:12

I've often wondered the same thing.

You don't have to put on thermals and arctic trek type clothing! - just a jumper on top of your t-shirt. It's the first thing I do before putting the heating on. Body warmers are great too, not bulky at all.

TheSalmonMousse · 07/06/2025 07:13

Yabu. If the air is cold it's hard to warm up. I had the heating on for couple of hours as well as wearing layers.

Hedonism · 07/06/2025 07:16

Ok, good for you, but are they putting the heating on and complaining about the cost? Because if the cost doesn't bother them then just let them crack on, I'm sure they already know about the jumper option.

(Disclaimer - my heating is not on and I am wearing a hoodie at the moment).

Indeed. It was very cold yesterday here and I had jeans, t, jumper but I was still chilly so the heating went on. Why does it bother you OP?

RedBeech · 07/06/2025 07:17

Dh yesterday morning when we got up: 'it's so cold but I don't want to put the heating on in June.'
Me: 'You are in boxer shorts and tee shirt and bare feet. I am in long PJs, slippers, warm dressing gown. I'm not cold.'

Frequency · 07/06/2025 07:17

I put my heating on if it's cold and wet because putting a hoodie on doesn't heat the house and help prevent damp and mould.

It does irritate me, though, when DD wanders around the house in a vest and knickers and starts whining that she is cold and asking for the heating to be on.

This ⬆️. I am also pragmatic. I don't go on a calendar, but we have a thermostat as well. Most useful.
Not a martyr, but I like to be comfortable!

CandidRaven · 07/06/2025 07:18

Are you paying their bills? I'm confused as to why it bothers you

Why doesn't she get dressed? How old is she?

megacat · 07/06/2025 07:21

Could you please explain this to my teenage son who will sit around with a T shirt and no socks but want the heating on 😀

I don’t know why people are being snippy towards OP saying they have layers/ jumpers and the heating on. Read the OP, this isn’t aimed at you 🙄

Summertimealready · 07/06/2025 07:21

So where on earth are these people who are putting their heating on? Is it in the UK?
I'm in Scotland and the weather hasn't been great recently but its nowhere near cold enough to put heating on.
Even in winter my thermostat is set so the heating doesn't come on until the temperature goes below 13°.
Putting warm clothing on is the normal reaction to cooler weather surely?

Saltnchilli · 07/06/2025 07:21

Because I like to feel warm all over. If it’s cold, just putting a jumper on doesn’t take the chill off the house.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 07:22

@Summertimealready because it's individual. 13°c is very low. The recommendation is 18°c for a healthy, comfortable environment.

She's 22, I have no clue why she doesn't get dressed. I ask her that all the time but usually get a lecture on slut/body shaming her Confused

We have a rule that the heating cannot go on until she has a jumper on, unless it has rained a lot, if she is still cold once she is fully dressed, she can turn on the radiators for an hour. I doubt she pays attention to the rules when I'm not home. I have come home to her lounging on her bed in her underwear with the heating turned up high. She does, however, pay towards the gas when I ask her to, so I can't complain too much.

carrotycrumble · 07/06/2025 07:22

As a PP said, I use a thermostat to make decisions on my behalf.

firsttimemom99x · 07/06/2025 07:24

Because I like wearing minimal clothes in my own house, it’s where I feel the most comfortable 🤷🏼‍♀️ but it hasn’t been cold enough to put the heating on lately imo, but it’s on majority of the time from October - March

Yeah, going round the house in vest and knickers is a bit impractical I would say, I'm not slut shaming but people normally get dressed!

Reallyyyyyy · 07/06/2025 07:25

I just out mine on for 2 hours...we all have aarm PJs thick blankets. But our house is 600 years old and all heat escapes through every nook and cranny, so I put it on to take the chill off when the kids are waking up.

I don't go by the cake dar, I go by the temperature. It's also very wet and damp today so the house needs a bit of warmth as it's prone to damp...

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 07:26

@Reallyyyyyy , yes I think it's the damp that's the problem. It's been hammering with rain where we are.

Mymanyellow · 07/06/2025 07:27

I do t know where everybody is living but it’s not been cold enough for heating round here.

She sounds like an exhibitionist.
She get dressed if you have visitors in your home?
