Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

stoow · 07/06/2025 06:55

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

I put the heating on for half an hour last night. Mainly because I have to somehow do 3 lots of washing and get them dry over the next 48 hours and its been raining for the last 3 days, set to continue all weekend. If anyone has any tips how to do that without having the heating on I'd appreciate it! (No room for a tumble dryer here sadly).

Heated airer from Lakeland they fold away when not in use . I think it’s like 9p and hour to run and they heat up a whole room too.

Seconded here. I sometimes, when we've had an extended wet patch, hang things on the curtain rail with the windows open a bit and the dehumidifier function on our little Aircon unit.

Works like a dream.

You should keep the window closed when using the dehumidifier as it draws in the damp from outside as well.

I use our dehumidifier a lot.

Thanks. I had a heated airer but it really didn't work very well. Just dried some lines on the clothes! It was only cheap so maybe wasn't putting out enough heat to really help. I'll look into this one!

Koalafan · 07/06/2025 07:59

Us too. It helps dry the air and it feels less cold, as well as helping with washing. I mostly stick ours on auto and it only comes on when needed, but it also has a clothes drying function. It's working away in my bedroom just now. Room was aired first then window closed. We do use our oldish inherited tumble drier on occasion but not a lot.

Get a new tumble dryer if you can, they're brilliant. Ours is very economical to use and is moisture sensitive. I wouldn't be without it!

Agix · 07/06/2025 08:08

I'm sure there's plenty of reasons someone may put the heating on before putting on more clothes.

For putting on more layers to work, you need to be able to generate enough heat (and efficiently) from your own body to be able warm yourself up (heat getting trapped in the layers) . Some people don't generate enough heat for this to happen. Men, or chubby or fat people, etc this might work well for.

Younger women, very slim people, people with health conditions etc putting on more layers may not work at all to warm them up. When I was very skinny and unwell from anorexia, putting on layers or even wrapping myself in a blanket made no noticeable change to how warm I felt. If the environment was cold I'd be cold, because I was not generating much heat for layers to do anything.

Some people may not have this problem, but may have sensory issues with putting on more clothes, and want to be warm AND comfortable in their own homes. Not warm but uncomfortable.

Sitting in a cold house is downright miserable and if you're someone who runs cold anyway, it takes less to feel awful from it.

Trying to breastfeed my baby in a cold house is horrible, especially during the night.

Working from home with cold hands and feet is equally miserable.

I can afford to put my heating on so I'll do it thanks 😊

Another vote for a dehumidifier. Game changer if you don’t have a tumble dryer.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 08:16

That is a good explanation @Agix
Some people simply don't understand that ambient temperature matters. Sitting still trying to type with cold hands and a cold dripping nose in spite of wearing several layers just doesn't cut it for those of us who run cold.

DH is very underweight due to health issues and feels the cold terribly.

I bet people who can tolerate 13 degrees would be the first to complain about the "hot" weather when the temperature reaches 20 degrees.

Summertimealready · 07/06/2025 08:16

Thanks @RampantIvy

That's veryhelpful, especially as I'm travelling down to Yourkshire at the end of next week.
And also interesting given the announcement about solar panels on the news yesterday.

And? Do you expect a pat on the back, or perhaps a gold sticker?

People are free to use their heating should they wish to do so. Many people heat according to what the temperature is, not because of a random date.

aspidernamedfluffy · 07/06/2025 08:16

Mine's on as I have washing to dry...no room for a tumble dryer or heated airer.

I agree with a PP that if you had said that you couldn't afford to heat your house instead of sounding morally supeior about it my earlier reply to you wouldn't have been so snippy.

Narwhalsh · 07/06/2025 08:32

I’m in Scotland and the heating hasn’t and won’t be on for months. It’s definitely not cold enough for it.

Reminder than burning natural gas in your boiler releases CO2 which is contributing to climate change. I hope these people aren’t only pointing fingers at oil and gas companies and blaming them for excessive climate heat/rain/wind/cold and are taking accountability that their unnecessary consumption is directly contributing to this. Even electrified systems require burning of gas at power stations to supply their electricity (because we don’t have a reliable renewable grid)

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 08:35

@Narwhalsh , however, it's unrealistic to suggest that it's somehow wrong to use your heating for this reason, it's not a luxury.
I think it's possible to keep your consumption low, but still be comfortable and have a healthy home.
Just finger pointing about CO2 consumption isn't helpful.

She's 22, I have no clue why she doesn't get dressed. I ask her that all the time but usually get a lecture on slut/body shaming her Confused

We have a rule that the heating cannot go on until she has a jumper on, unless it has rained a lot, if she is still cold once she is fully dressed, she can turn on the radiators for an hour. I doubt she pays attention to the rules when I'm not home. I have come home to her lounging on her bed in her underwear with the heating turned up high. She does, however, pay towards the gas when I ask her to, so I can't complain too much.

Because the only reason to wear clothes is to cover up the shameful body. They definitely don't keep us warm. 😂

chipsandpeas · 07/06/2025 08:38

i live alone so pay all the bills, if i want to put my heating on in june then i will and i did last night as i was freezing and house was 15 degrees

Wanderdust · 07/06/2025 08:42

I've had heating on - in Scotland in a very cool house!

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 08:47

It’s definitely not cold enough for it for you. We aren't all the same. There is no need to be so morally superior because you don't feel the cold.

Blanket stamenets like this are irrelevant. Scotland, like everywhere else has different micro climates and a huge variation in altitudes. A team from work climbed Ben Nevis this week and encountered snow.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/06/2025 08:47

Even my dh (who usually has inbuilt central, heating) said the house felt chilly last night - the heating went on for a few hours. And we’re in the SE.

I used to work with 2 blokes who would only ever wear short sleeved or T shirts even in the depths of winter, so our heating would be on full blast. The general public, in and out a lot, would say how sweltering it was and have to take their coats off.

MidoriNoRingo · 07/06/2025 08:53

I’m in the south west and went to bed with all the windows open! Definitely not cold down here!

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 07/06/2025 08:55

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 08:03

I use our dehumidifier a lot.

It's our bedroom and it makes it WAY too hot in there come bedtime if the windows are fully closed. They're open a crack to let the heat out.

It's a mad room. It's either freezing or boiling in there and never in between. Rest of the house is great, holds the temperature well. But the bedroom is insane.

Exactly this. I think we live in a similar area - I'm in the Peak District. Just 15 minutes drive into Sheffield and it was a lot warmer. It's not a one size fits all, hence the need to have local forecasts.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 09:14

Yes, Sheffield (half an hour away) is always a few degrees warmer than where we are.

Reminder that we all make different choices.
Someone who uses more heat at home maybe takes less flights.
Someone who takes more flights maybe buys virtually no plastic.
Someone who buys some pre-packaged food only buys preloved clothes.
And so on......

workingcocker · 07/06/2025 09:20

I put the heating on last night, I also put a load on of tea lights inside the log burner to make it feel like the fire was on.

I work hard, I can afford it. Why the hell not.

Shock horror I probably had the back door open for most of the evening too so the dog could go out when he wanted.

So irresponsible living life on the edge!!
