Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

stoow · 07/06/2025 06:55

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

Thanks, @Koalafan . It is indeed nuanced. Judging people on heating use isn't helpful in this instance.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/06/2025 09:25

We’re NE Scotland in an old granite house - yesterday it was biblical rain and this morning the heating came on so it’s presumably cold enough to need it. Our account is in credit so it’s fine. My phone says the temp outside is 11 degrees.

That is a good explanation @Agix
Some people simply don't understand that ambient temperature matters. Sitting still trying to type with cold hands and a cold dripping nose in spite of wearing several layers just doesn't cut it for those of us who run cold.

DH is very underweight due to health issues and feels the cold terribly.

I bet people who can tolerate 13 degrees would be the first to complain about the "hot" weather when the temperature reaches 20 degrees.

I definitely do, especially because I’m in Oxfordshire where it doesn’t get anywhere near as cold as where I grew up and lived before moving to the UK ( below -15), it’s humid, and due to the build of houses where we are trapping in heat, it is usually cooler outside than it is inside. I don’t understand why when it rarely gets below 0 and snow/ ice isn’t even yearly and it is more grey and wet in winter than actual snow and ice.

I run warm as do all of our children so we’re often in thin clothes indoors. The kids also sweat in their sleep so we have a fan going in their rooms. Kids and I are in layers when we go out so we can remove when needed. DH is the only one who runs cold and walks around like Darth Vader in the house. Mum runs cold too, yet both annoyingly ask me how it feels outside and what they should wear.

The only part of me that is sensitive to cold is hands because the joints lock but if it came down to it, I’d take the cold, then constantly being hot and sweaty and on the verge of fainting.

If people need the heat, not my business or concern, their bills not mine.

MsTamborineMan · 07/06/2025 09:27

This is a bit like asking why people go out to eat when you've got beans on toast at home

Putting on the heating is just much nicer than wearing a jumper. It's easier and more comfortable for all, and I can afford to put the heating on, so if I'm uncomfortable I do.

I spent my whole childhood in a freezing house. Putting a jumper and socks on makes you a bit warmer but it's not the same as having warm, dry air. Your nose and hands are still cold and sometimes even with jumpers and blankets I can't warm up.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 07/06/2025 09:27

Where are you all that it's that cold? I'm in the south West and sat here with the back door wide open. No way would my heating go on in June.

Because they want to and it's none of your fucking business what they do in their own homes.

AmusedOpalShaker · 07/06/2025 09:27

I don’t tolerate much solid food and due to this am chronically anaemic. I am always bloody freezing, even on the hottest of days!

I pay my bills and if I want to put my heating on, I shall!

Incredibly judgy.

Someone has just said it's 11°c in Aberdeen.
The UK can be quite varied.
I'm in the Peak District and it's hammering with rain and 13°c.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 09:30

Some people don't realise that the UK weather is quite varied. If you look at the national weather forecast, there's often as much as a 10-15°c difference between various locations.

tammienorrie · 07/06/2025 09:31

I am in Scotland and this past week it has been cold! 8-11c in the morning, yes it gets warmer through the day but it has been chilly. I was staying overnight in another house (also in Scotland) this week, a 200 year old stone cottage and it was BALTIC. I was wrapped up in several layers AND a hoodie blanket. In June. Unfortunately the person I was staying with is one of those sanctimonious "Oh we don't ever use heating between Easter and Halloween" types.

This attitude that you are somehow superior because you don't heat your house above 13c or some other random figure is extremely odd.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 09:32

13 degrees and rain here in Pennine South Yorkshire @KickHimInTheCrotch

It's 10 degrees and raining right now where I am (east anglia)

No heating on at the minute but it was also 10 degrees and raining in January and I had the heating on, I'm not sure why it being June should outweigh the actual weather.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 09:33

I don't get it, @tammienorrie . Why do people think they're morally superior if they like being cold? Odd.

Marmite27 · 07/06/2025 09:35

Ours is set at 18. It came on this morning when I left the back door open for a bit. I was outside in just a tshirt, and am usually the one moaning they’re cold, so it was a surprise when it was on when I came back in.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 07:26

@Reallyyyyyy , yes I think it's the damp that's the problem. It's been hammering with rain where we are.

This. Wet Wales I'm frozen this morning. No heating but the log burner will be lit this afternoon. Last evening, fully dressed with damart fleece dressing gown, rug over knees and sheepskin slippers. DH went to bed early because he was cold he said.

Chicheguevara · 07/06/2025 09:39

Heating in June? Blimey.
My Dad always said that heating doesn’t work until 21st November and stops working on the 21st March. He also said that jumpers are available and that some people had more money than sense. We didn’t have double glazing, growing up, either.

Currently have a hoodie over my tee shirt. It’s a bit cool here today. Ditto yesterday evening.

I don’t necessarily agree with the March cut off thing in my own home. As an (alleged) adult, I make my own decisions but never heating in June.

tammienorrie · 07/06/2025 09:40

I'm not sure why it being June should outweigh the actual weather.

It's the weirdest attitude. Heating determined by the calendar rather than the actual temperature.

I'm sure that if there was an unseasonably warm day in November/February then the same people would be saying to turn the heating off/down because it was too warm to use. But when it's unseasonably cold in June/August then the heating can't go on?

LividVermiciousKnid · 07/06/2025 09:41

My rooms are on individual thermostats and set to come on currently at 16.

I don’t want damp and I have a small child.

This “not putting the heating on until November” bollocks baffles my brain. Houses and locations and circumstances are different. Why would you choose to be cold to save a quid, unless you are really on the bones of your arse financially and most people here aren't, they’re just stubborn.

AliasGrape · 07/06/2025 09:45

Ours is currently on because we’ve been away for just over a week, it’s cold and wet here and I have about 6 loads of washing to do and then get dry. Did the towels and swimwear when we got back last night (DC swimming lessons this morning so needed them sorting) left overnight and still soaking wet this morning so heating on in the hopes of getting them out of the way and the next load on the airer.

DH isn’t happy about it mind!

We dont have a dryer but times like this I really want one.

Wellifyouresurebetterbegryffindor · 07/06/2025 09:47

Ahh we haven't had a competitive cold tolerance thread for a bit. Anyone can feel cold when their body tells them they feel cold.

I'm another one who doesn't go by months. Sometimes it's freezing in June. My lovely thermostat does that for me. I pay the bill so none of anyone else's concern what I wear or what temperature it is set at.

Noshadelamp · 07/06/2025 09:47

A hoodie or jumper doesn't heat up the cold air.
Breathing cold air for people with airway or lung problems is difficult, painful and triggers inflammation and further issues.

LondonFox · 07/06/2025 09:47

Bcs I like to fuck and don't want to feel frozen hands on me under 689 layers of clothes. Also, it helps if I am not wrapped up as a bear ready for hybernation.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 09:47

That was a bit rigid of your dad, @Chicheguevara . No logic to just using the calendar as opposed to the actual air temperature.

DoAWheelie · 07/06/2025 09:51
  1. Because the house gets damp and needs the heating on when it's cold and wet to stop the mould from getting out of control.
  2. Because I have sensory issues and don't tolerate wearing stuff covering my legs and arms without wanting to scratch my skin off. I have poor healing so small scratches can become ulcers quite easily so I do need to avoid scratching. I live in shorts and t-shirt year round.
  3. No longer applicable but my late OH had Pulmonary Fibrosis and breathing in cold air would cause a coughing fit that would last until it went away so we needed to maintain a consistent warm temperature year round or he'd choke to death. He couldn't even tolerate standing in front of the fridge. Years of living like that majorly changed the way my body tolerates the cold (i.e it just doesn't).
  4. The cats whinge and get clingy when it's cold and after a while I get touched out and turn it on to get them to go cuddle the radiator to get a break. They also start to fight when together for more than a couple of hours in my lap and that's a risk for wounds on my legs again that will ulcerate. A tiny scratch can take 2 months to heal.
  5. I have asthma and I'm more likely to get asthma attacks when it's cold and damp
mickandrorty · 07/06/2025 09:52

Because that's what heating is for! We lived for years with crap storage heaters having absolutely miserable cold winters. Never again, if i feel cold the heating goes on. my energy is £417 in credit!
