Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

stoow · 07/06/2025 06:55

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

I don't put my heating on. It comes on when the thermostat dips below 20 degrees regardless of the time of year. I wear jumpers when it is cold and have been wearing them for the last week.

However, I will not be a martyr to the cold and don't use a calendar to decide when the heating goes on. Thermostats are great inventions.

Same. I've had jumpers on basically all year so far bar a couple of warmer days in May. The past few weeks have been cold and the thermostat (which was set to 19 all winter) has been dipping to 17 during the day and in our house that's freezing throughout the house (I know that varies in other people's houses depending on where the thermostat is and how well some rooms hold heat). It got to ridiculous points where DH set the thermostat back to 19 and he usually barely even feels the cold. He'd been wearing a jumper with a fleece jacket on top and a hat while working from home. Yes it's June, but that doesn't mean it's warm everywhere.

2025mj · 07/06/2025 10:58

In Scotland and also on mj so I'm freezing all the time 😂
I think I've had maybe two or three days of this year where I haven't put it on
But I'm still on a pay as you go meter and it's only costing £50 a month so not even that bad

I put the heating on for half an hour last night. Mainly because I have to somehow do 3 lots of washing and get them dry over the next 48 hours and its been raining for the last 3 days, set to continue all weekend. If anyone has any tips how to do that without having the heating on I'd appreciate it! (No room for a tumble dryer here sadly).

Dehumidifier. We have one and it helps to get rid of damp as well as drying the clothes faster.

The competitive under heaters are out!

I cannot understand the mentality because it is summer in The UK the heating does not go on.

UK summers are unpredictable and frequently cold and wet. A jumper and blanket only keeps you warm if you stay in one place in the house.

Dry warm air is needed to stop damp, mould and keep the air in the house ambient and not damp. Again, wearing a jumper won't stop this.

My Mum's partner ( elderly) is like this regarding heating. Refuses to have the heating on for more than thirty minutes in winter. Mum has a chronic illness and they sit there in blankets, hats, coats et. al. It isn't about affordability with them either, he is just mean with his money. Mum, fortunately is not.

I refuse to stay at their place and stay in a hotel, because I am not sitting in a cold and miserable house.

Do you think people don't go camping in Scotland in June? The campsite I can see from my window would beg to differ.

Yes. I know people go camping in June. Thank you.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 11:06

"the competitive under heaters are out"!
Too true, @Norfolklass2428 . Perhaps it's just a lack of empathy.

AliBaliBee1234 · 07/06/2025 11:06

I've had mine on. Have a baby and tbh it's been quite cold.

I’d never put the heating on in June, no way. As you say a jumper and blanket will suffice, surely?

It was 4 degrees overnight and freezing in the morning. You'd have the heating on getting up to those temperatures in January so why not in June?

Thatladdo · 07/06/2025 11:09

If people want to put their heating on they are free to do so!
Your not special or amazing because you havent had yours on or would put a jumper on, just comes across as weird.

Jumper goon

CatteryCatz · 07/06/2025 11:10

It might be habit to put the heating on first.

I personally, but my dressing gown on if I’m cold first. Though, in the Winter months, I’m happier to put the heating on too.

Or maybe, people don't want to be sitting in a dressing gown/heavy jumper, and lugging a blanket wrapped round them when moving around from room to room?

Exactly this. Our thermostat is always at 20 so if it comes on, it comes on. I want to be comfortable in my own home rather than layering up with jumpers.

Whataloadoffuss · 07/06/2025 11:26

Had to dry some washing the other day when it was pouring with rain. I got it half dry on the line before that, then hung it on the clothes dryer in front of a plug-in heater that is cheaper to run. Don't need the heating on. There are lots of variables though, some houses are more drafty, poor double glazing etc, it really depends on circumstances.

Not me....I prefer wrapping myself up like a human burrito! One of the asd things about summer is that I can no longer create a blanket nest to watch telly in the evening!

But really who cares? Everybody is different....

tammienorrie · 07/06/2025 11:33

thing is though @henlake7 the judgement only goes one way. Nobody gives two hoots if you want to wrap yourself up like a burrito. Because you are not coming on here saying you are RIGHT and everyone else is WRONG, and that it is wrong to use heating when the calendar says it is June.

Because I like wearing minimal clothes in my own house, it’s where I feel the most comfortable 🤷🏼‍♀️ but it hasn’t been cold enough to put the heating on lately imo, but it’s on majority of the time from October - March

Ugh! This was my life at my parents lol it was so warm as they could afford no locks on the thermostat lol so could swan around all year long in shorts and T-shirt! Now I live alone in a fairly large detached home and it’s always cold. I hate layering up, makes me feel itchy and less mobile because I’m tiny and all the layers probably weigh as much as me! Only have heating on Dec-March and even then usually max 3 hrs week. One of my main goals for trying for promotion right now is that when I retire in 15yrs or so, I want to be able to wear lighter clothes and enjoy my home all year round by being able to afford to put the heat as when I like. It’s really so true that as you get older, you just want the simple things in life!

zingally · 07/06/2025 12:04

Just before sitting down to look at MN, I almost considered putting the heating on for a bit. But then I remembered it was June. So no. Mine won't go on again until at least September.
Instead, I made myself a hot drink, and am now feeling fine. When that wears off, I'll pop upstairs and fetch my oodie.

Yes, that's the point! The moral superiority.

JockyWilsonsaid · 07/06/2025 07:09

I put the heating on because I was cold, I'm an adult and can make that decision and I'm the one who pays the bills. I don't see why I should sit bundled up (I was already wearing a vest and a sweatshirt) when I can put the heating on for a couple of hours.

and the point for completely missing the point goes to....

You weren't sitting there in your vest, you were wearing a sweatshirt which is literally OP's title.

Nobody is suggesting the heating should never be used or you should put so many layers on you can't move. Just that you should try putting a jumper on first then only turn the heating on if you are still cold.

ChuckleDaughter · 07/06/2025 12:15

Because I'd rather actually be warm than just cold with a jumper on.

tammienorrie · 07/06/2025 12:18

Nobody is suggesting the heating should never be used

But that's not true. We had had people on this thread stating that their heating is never used between X Randomdate and Y Randomdate. Irrespective of temperature.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 12:23

Just come back in from being out all morning. It is now 11 degrees outside.

Guess what - the heating has just come on.

People have most definitely suggested not putting the heating on.

Someone has just said it's 11°c in Aberdeen.
The UK can be quite varied.
I'm in the Peak District and it's hammering with rain and 13°c.

Yes, just as I said upthread. Variable throughout the UK. So people are being critical somewhat unjustly.
