Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

stoow · 07/06/2025 06:55

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

So where on earth are these people who are putting their heating on? Is it in the UK?
I'm in Scotland and the weather hasn't been great recently but its nowhere near cold enough to put heating on.
Even in winter my thermostat is set so the heating doesn't come on until the temperature goes below 13°.
Putting warm clothing on is the normal reaction to cooler weather surely?

Bully for you. We aren't all as "well 'ard" as you are. I wouldn't be able to function sitting still at my desk all day at 14 degrees. There is a reason that the minimum temperature required in the workplace office is 16 degrees.

There is no need to be so sanctimonious.

It can't be good for the house to keep it cold if it is damp outside either.
Competitive under heating posts aren't very helpful.
@FleurDeFleur is correct.

TheSalmonMousse · 07/06/2025 07:30

I'm cold under 20°.
You don't hear me moaning when the temperature is in the 30's. I find it comfortable.

BogRollBOGOF · 07/06/2025 07:30

I haven't needed heating on recently, but sometimes after a run of cool, dull days the walls of the house and furniture have cooled down and there's a certain level of cool air that makes my nose go cold and dribbly. At that point a jumper doesn't solve that and it needs warm air to breathe in.

IttyBittyLittleKitty · 07/06/2025 07:30

My neighbour wears shorts and T-shirts most of the year but they put their heating on. That's the way they like to do it and they can afford it so their choice. I have had the heating on several times recently though because I foster cats and have some kittens in at the moment and I don't like them to be cold.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! 😂

JockyWilsonsaid · 07/06/2025 07:09

I put the heating on because I was cold, I'm an adult and can make that decision and I'm the one who pays the bills. I don't see why I should sit bundled up (I was already wearing a vest and a sweatshirt) when I can put the heating on for a couple of hours.

I put my heating when I am cold. Though generally have one jumper on. There is an odd bragging attitude around heating with some people. Like who can tolerate the most cold, or who has the heating off for longest. It’s weird!

We all feel cold differently. I am not sure why people need to get competitive over it, or see their lack of need for heating as a badge of honour!

Summertimealready · 07/06/2025 06:59

Sorry I've not seen anything about this. Where are people putting their heating on?

My heating won't be going on until November at the earliest!

Where we live (cold, damp, island) it normally has to come on well before then. It's unbearable otherwise. We do layer up and have a dehumidifier, but houses need to be kept a certain temperature/dryness, as well as people.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 07:33

@HeadlinesEnough "badge of honour" is exactly right. It's like there's some sort of moral superiority in living in a cold house.

She sounds like an exhibitionist.
She get dressed if you have visitors in your home?

Yes, she dresses when we have guests, however, she also has severe social anxiety and depression, and her home is her haven, so we rarely have guests.

I don't think her lack of clothing is related to her depression. If it's a case of not having the energy or motivation to dress, she has plenty of onsies, fleece PJs, and oodies she could wear. It could be sensory; there are lots of fabrics and clothing styles she can't wear because of sensory issues, but again, she has plenty of warm clothing she can (and does, when she leaves the house) wear.

I honestly don't know what it is. I've never wandered around in my undies. I'm constantly cold, and the first thing I reach for when I get in from work is my giant fleece hoodie. Ditto when I wake up in the morning, or get out of the shower.

Like I said, when I ask her why she cannot get dressed she accuses me of slut shaming her.

Blarn · 07/06/2025 07:35

Mine went on for about 15 mins the other morning. It was cool but in no way cold enough for the heating but upstairs felt damp, especially after the shower had been on and it was damp and raining outside. The heating and running the dehumidifier sorted it out but I turned it off as soon as it was sorted.

It also went on a couple of weeks ago but thar was when I must have bumped I to the thermostat when carrying stuff upstairs. I thought I was getting really ill with high temperature, so happy when.i realised it was the heating on 30!

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 07/06/2025 07:35

I have a three year old. Doesn't matter if I put a jumper on if she's still cold.

I also run warm, so if I've got her in layers and still need to warm her house a bit for her, there's a good chance I'll be in shortly sleeves (as is often the case in winter). DH however often runs cold, so again we might have the heating on while he's in a jumper and I might be in shorts/short sleeves.

It's about the whole household not just one of you.

Unless they're complaining that it's costing them too much, let them do what suits them and makes them comfortable.

Scotland is a reasonable sized country.
I can guarantee that some parts are colder/windier/damper than others.

It is actually genuine interest as to where the weather is cold enough to warrant heating being on in June actually.

And also I suppose it is the feeling people like to rub other's nose in the fact they are wealthy enough to use their heating on a whim where as for quite a lot of us heating is a luxury that can only be used sparingly and as a last resort.

It's not about rubbing people's noses in anything. Someone started a thread. People are offering opinions.

Depends on the house as well. Our last house was very old (built in the 1000s) and drafty (desperately needed new windows but a rental and the landlord wouldn't) and had very thick stone walls so it took months for them to warm through enough for the inside heat to be held. Then it took months for it to cool again. Sometimes we had to heat it so that it wasn't damp.

Current house is small and more modern and takes 15 mins to heat then holds the heat well.

So if you're in a colder/damper area and in a house that takes more heating, it's not unfeasible.

I'm sorry that it's tough for you, it must be miserable and I wish these energy companies had lower tariffs. However, you did appear to be judgemental of other's choices in terms of tolerating low temperature. As if people were morally wrong to put the heating on. You didn't originally indicate that it was a financial issue.

Indeed. It was very cold yesterday here and I had jeans, t, jumper but I was still chilly so the heating went on. Why does it bother you OP?

Doesn't sound pleasant. It was 18 degrees in Essex last night . Not been cold for ages. Although I grew up without central heating so always had the habit of putting on a jumper else it meant laying and lighting a fire

sparkellie · 07/06/2025 07:42

I put the heating on for half an hour last night. Mainly because I have to somehow do 3 lots of washing and get them dry over the next 48 hours and its been raining for the last 3 days, set to continue all weekend. If anyone has any tips how to do that without having the heating on I'd appreciate it! (No room for a tumble dryer here sadly).

When I was in Inverness a couple of weeks ago it was warm and sunny. I live on the edge of the Pennines in South Yorkshire and the maximum temperature forecast today is 13 degrees and rain, and I expect the thermostat will kick the heating on at some point today.

Our solar panels mean that we are £46 in credit so far this year on our energy bills.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 07:46

We're neighbours, @RampantIvy ! It's very cool and rainy, the forecast is below average for the time of year (for those who prefer to consult the calendar!)

Dehumidifiers work well, as do heated airers. Our tumble dryer exploded a few weeks ago, and the dehumidifier/air con unit was a lifesaver. Combined with the heated airer someone lent me, it dried clothes almost as quickly as the dryer and for a fraction of the price.

Seconded here. I sometimes, when we've had an extended wet patch, hang things on the curtain rail with the windows open a bit and the dehumidifier function on our little Aircon unit.

Works like a dream.

I put my heating on yesterday. I was wearing a jumper, jeans and socks. I hadn’t had my heating on for a long time, but yesterday was cold.

Lilyhatesjaz · 07/06/2025 07:54

I also have a dehumidifier, it is fantastic, it is quite a big one but I can plug it in anywhere and it dries the washing and has helped with our damp problem.

Us too. It helps dry the air and it feels less cold, as well as helping with washing. I mostly stick ours on auto and it only comes on when needed, but it also has a clothes drying function. It's working away in my bedroom just now. Room was aired first then window closed. We do use our oldish inherited tumble drier on occasion but not a lot.
