Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

stoow · 07/06/2025 06:55

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

They heat their homes.

Being out in the cold temporarily is different to permanently having a cold and potentially damp home.

NHS guidelines recommend a minimum of 18 degrees. The HSE guidelines recommend a minimum of 16 degrees for sedentary workers in the office and 13 degrees for jobs like warehouse work. I find 16 degrees too cold to work comfortably at a desk.

No-one gets a medal for being able to withstand cold.

And those who work outside in those temperatures?

RampantIvy · 09/06/2025 22:41

Ask a Norwegian.

They still go home to a heated home.

What whether they have different lungs that don't get damaged in cold lol

They may well go home to a heated home. But after 8 hours outside if cold was going to damage the lungs surely it would in that time

Take it up with the NHS who recommend a minimum of 18 for houses and 16 for indoor work.

Here you go. Google’s AI has this to say about outdoor work and its management in Norway. Amongst other things they have to have warm up areas.

@HeadlinesEnough "badge of honour" is exactly right. It's like there's some sort of moral superiority in living in a cold house.

Same folk as never drive to the shops, always get up before 7.30am, eat hearty breakfast, no heating before November. Etc etc

Hmm1234 · 10/06/2025 21:46

I do wear short sleeves with the heating on as extra layers seem to flare up my eczema

ArtTheClown · 10/06/2025 21:51

Yes, it's definitely Puritanical. No comfort or warmth. It's seen by some people to give moral superiority, especially on here.

I'm delighted to be morally lax and indulgent, in my warm, dry, comfortable house.
I never got the knack of keeping myself warm by thr glow of my moral virtue alone.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 10/06/2025 21:54

The Norwegians keep their homes properly toasty too. None of this, carrying on like anything of 18c is the height of decadence.

Verv · 10/06/2025 22:27

Moral virtue isn’t enough to keep anyone’s nips under control in winter 🤣

Itchybritches · 10/06/2025 23:00

I’m asthmatic and sitting under a duvet has absolutely no effect on the cold, damp air I’m breathing in all day and irritating my lungs.

JayJayj · 12/06/2025 08:50

I put mine on to heat the house. Also when it rained I had washing that needed drying so 2 birds!

I never drive anywhere (cant drive) and never put my central heating on (dont have any)....
but I can pretend its all down to moral superiority if you like!!LOL😄

Bababear987 · 13/06/2025 16:55

You realise that like most things in life people have different tolerances to things. I absolutely hate being cold and refuse to sit about in big thick jumpers where my extremities are still ice cold but my trunk is practically sweating.

And guess what, it's my money why the hell wouldnt I use it to keep myself comfortable

Sorry I've not seen anything about this. Where are people putting their heating on?

My heating won't be going on until November at the earliest!

You’re obviously not in scotland then.

Rainbows41 · 22/09/2025 21:12

Because we're not children living with our parents. We are adults living in our own houses that we pay for.
Personally I don't want to sit in a bulky jumper or hoody in my home. If I'm home I'll crack the heating up so I can continue to sit in my vest with no bra on because when I'm home, I'm relaxing, and that means being comfortable.

Rainbows41 · 22/09/2025 21:22

The coldest I have ever experienced was -29° in Bavaria. It didn't feel like minus anything at all.
I was on a skiing trip and ended up skiing in just my sallopettes and thermal top because I was sweating in jacket and gloves.

On our evening walks when the cold really kicked in, the only way you realised it was actually that cold was when your nostrils and eyelashes formed icicles. Again, ended up sweltering in my thermals and coat, so took coat off.

If everyone does that, we’ve no hope of getting on top of the challenges of climate change.

You sound like an irresponsible adult. Warm clothes don't have to be bulky.

saraclara · 23/09/2025 07:50

I economise on plenty of things, but heating isn't one of them. Feeling comfortable in my own home is a priority (it's a pretty basic need, really), so the thermostat is set to 20 and I don't look at the date.
Fortunately my house is well insulated, and I can afford it.

It's a weird thing to judge people on

AliceMaforethought · 23/09/2025 08:46

Mind your own business. Not everyone is skint.

Lollie2903 · 23/09/2025 08:51

I completely agree. Only reason I put it on is for my little girl at bath time and in the morning or she doesnt want to get ready for nursery. I would much rather a hoodie/dressing gown. We also have an electric heater in her room so we can have that on without putting the heating on.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 23/09/2025 09:01

Why are people on mumsnet so bloody patronising about heating. It's like some kind of pissing contest.

I put the heating on when I'm cold. What I do with my heating in my own home is no one's business. If I want to sit around in shorts and tshirt in my own home with the heating on I can do. I don't but that's not my point.

I've been cold the past few days even in a jumper. I've put the heating on occasionally. I'm not going to sit in the cold until November to prove a point. I'm not going to huddle under a blanket whilst I'm trying to work with fingers that are so cold they're sore. I've paid off last Winter's bill so I'm ready to build up this winter's.

It's October next week, it was the Autumn Equinox yesterday. It may be sunny but there's a definite chill in the air, we also have a NE wind which is adding to the chill factor.
