Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

It is actually genuine interest as to where the weather is cold enough to warrant heating being on in June actually.

And also I suppose it is the feeling people like to rub other's nose in the fact they are wealthy enough to use their heating on a whim where as for quite a lot of us heating is a luxury that can only be used sparingly and as a last resort.

You didn’t say anything about not being able to afford heating. This feels like disingenuous backtracking.

You said:

I'm in Scotland and the weather hasn't been great recently but its nowhere near cold enough to put heating on

Your faux shock that you can’t believe people in the UK are cold enough to be putting heating on is bit cringeworthy. It’s obviously we’re not in a heatwave. Clearly cost wasn’t an issue in your initial slightly judgy post.

Even in winter my thermostat is set so the heating doesn't come on until the temperature goes below 13°.
Putting warm clothing on is the normal reaction to cooler weather surely?

Same and we are pretty far north. Not that I have heating to put on as such as we don't have any gas.

We've still got windows open. Our forecast is for a high of 11 today and night time down to 5 but it doesn't feel that way in June.

My kids slept out in the tent yesterday quite happily.

I'm not sure why it being June should outweigh the actual weather.

It's the weirdest attitude. Heating determined by the calendar rather than the actual temperature.

I'm sure that if there was an unseasonably warm day in November/February then the same people would be saying to turn the heating off/down because it was too warm to use. But when it's unseasonably cold in June/August then the heating can't go on?

Exactly!

I'm sure there's plenty of reasons someone may put the heating on before putting on more clothes.

For putting on more layers to work, you need to be able to generate enough heat (and efficiently) from your own body to be able warm yourself up (heat getting trapped in the layers) . Some people don't generate enough heat for this to happen. Men, or chubby or fat people, etc this might work well for.

Younger women, very slim people, people with health conditions etc putting on more layers may not work at all to warm them up. When I was very skinny and unwell from anorexia, putting on layers or even wrapping myself in a blanket made no noticeable change to how warm I felt. If the environment was cold I'd be cold, because I was not generating much heat for layers to do anything.

Some people may not have this problem, but may have sensory issues with putting on more clothes, and want to be warm AND comfortable in their own homes. Not warm but uncomfortable.

Edited

Yes, I am at the thin end of the spectrum and suspect it is part of why I feel the cold so much.

But it genuinely doesn't feel the same in June because the fabric of the house has had time to warm up and takes longer to cool down.

We also benefit from solar gain and it's been bloody windy here so despite some rain the air is very dry which feels warmer.

Houses that get little sun or are in damper areas maybe feel different but we've not had enough rain for it to remain damp very long.

I am really warm in the house today despite a fairly low temperature. Here anything above 16 would be considered a good summer's day.

WitchHag · 07/06/2025 10:03

It’s an ongoing (lighthearted…..mostly!) argument in my house.

I like it cooler, I like to open windows and especially like a breeze on my face as I sleep.

My other half likes it hot, has been known to put on additional heaters in July, considers 28 degrees about right and a normal temperature.

Their position: I’m too cold, it’s horrible, I need the heating on, it’s not fair to make me uncomfortable.

My position: I’m far too hot, it’s horrible and sweaty, you can put a jumper on but I can’t peel my bloody skin off!

Oh the joys, it a go-to argument :)

Im right though, obvs 🤣

Right. Maybe your kids' tent and sleeping bags are well insulated for the 5°c overnight temperature.

Zanatdy · 07/06/2025 10:14

I’d never put the heating on in June, no way. As you say a jumper and blanket will suffice, surely?

beefandblackbeans · 07/06/2025 10:15

Because we have solar panels so it’s cheap as chips.

Boredlass · 07/06/2025 10:16

I refuse to sit with lots of layers on. It’s uncomfortable. I can afford the heating anyway

Vaxtable · 07/06/2025 10:17

It’s their choice and up to them. Nothing to do with you

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/06/2025 10:19

I put the heating on when it’s cold. It’s my decision. I like a warm house and hate hate hate the bunched up feeling from lots of layers. And the cold just sneaks in between the cracks in the layers.

helpfulperson · 07/06/2025 10:27

I dont get this obsession with 'putting the heating on' Do most people not have thermostats? If my house is less that 20 degrees during the day my heating comes on. If it is over that it doesnt. I dont have anything to do with it.

tammienorrie · 07/06/2025 10:36

We have thermostats but you can also switch the boiler to a "summer" setting which means the heating doesn't come on, but it still gives hot water.

FiveBarGate · 07/06/2025 10:40

Do you think people don't go camping in Scotland in June? The campsite I can see from my window would beg to differ.

hehehesorry · 07/06/2025 10:40

I like the airy light feeling of having my arms free and can afford it, I don't want to wear a jumper in the house

Lemonade2011 · 07/06/2025 10:40

I used to nurse and visit people on their homes and older people really feel the cold i would walk in to a sauna and they’d ask for extra blankets. Also I have no thyroid and feel the cold, even with lots of layers on and if I am cold I’ll pop a blanket on then heating if that doesn’t warm me up. I’m paying for it and if I can afford it and I’m cold why wouldn’t I use it?

tammienorrie · 07/06/2025 10:42

It is 17.5c in my house at the moment and I am cold. I am wearing a hoodie and socks. Heating is going on.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 10:42

Chicheguevara · 07/06/2025 09:39

Heating in June? Blimey.
My Dad always said that heating doesn’t work until 21st November and stops working on the 21st March. He also said that jumpers are available and that some people had more money than sense. We didn’t have double glazing, growing up, either.

Currently have a hoodie over my tee shirt. It’s a bit cool here today. Ditto yesterday evening.

I don’t necessarily agree with the March cut off thing in my own home. As an (alleged) adult, I make my own decisions but never heating in June.

Gosh. Aren't you lucky to live somewhere that never gets cold and wet in June.

Zanatdy · 07/06/2025 10:14

Well. Clearly not.

Why does it make you feel morally superior to not feel the cold?

Exactly this .

henlake7 · 07/06/2025 10:49

Some people just prefer to walk about in their undies in a hot house, if it makes them happy then so what?
Likewise some people are elderly. very young, have health problems and really do need extra heat so of course they put the heating on.

Those arent my people though.....my people work our way up from cardies, fleeces, thermal underwear, Oodies, dressing gown, blankets, hot water bottles, electric blankets before we finally get to the heating!😃

YetAnotherNewNameAgain · 07/06/2025 10:52

Because, depending on your house and where you live, the heating helps to stave off damp, which causes other problems. Putting on a jumper doesn't help to protect the house.

It also doesn't help with breathing problems caused by the cold (although that is more in winter)
