Would you be annoyed if a relative bought a house 3 doors down from you without telling you?

That’s it really, you bought anew house and a few months later a relative buys a house a few doors down, without saying a word. Would you be annoyed? Or would it even bother you?

Depends on who it is. If it was my mum or MIL I’d be pissed as hell.

Birch101 · 19/05/2025 22:00

I would be annoyed

Not mum or mil no 🤣

more along the aunty/cousin vibe

I’d love it

soupforbrains · 19/05/2025 22:03

So much of this entirely depends on the specifics of the relationship that it’s really impossible to say. But if them literally moving in was the first you heard about it then that’s weird.

MarySueSaidBoo · 19/05/2025 22:03

Depends how well I got on with them.

If it was my sister, my house would already be on the market.

GabrielOakRose · 19/05/2025 22:04

If I liked the person I wouldn't mind. Eg. My sister. I'd be gutted and wanting to sell if it was my mum.

Wayk · 19/05/2025 22:04

It depends on my relationship with them but I would ensure I create boundaries at the start so there are no misunderstandings.

personally I be embarrassed to buy a house that close to relatives/friends

Spies · 19/05/2025 22:04

I'd be very annoyed that they didn't mention it, it makes the whole thing feel very suffocating to do it all behind your back.

Cloudy718 · 19/05/2025 22:04

I’d not be happy. I have no desire to live near any of my relatives. I’d find it suffocating and would move.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/05/2025 22:05

Depends entirely on who / how close we were / what the family vibe is. So, in answer, no fucking idea.

BrendaSmall · 19/05/2025 22:05

It really wouldn’t bother me as they’re not directly next door!

MermaidMummy06 · 19/05/2025 22:06

Depends on the relationship.

MIL cheerily told me she was looking at a house in our street. I would have moved up our plan to upgrade our house as I couldn't stand her being that close. (Thankfully they didn't, but bought not far away anyway).

A relative I didn't have entanglements with & minded their own business, not a problem. You'll probably find they just liked the house & dis want anyone trying to stop them buying it!

PluckyBamboo · 19/05/2025 22:06

As long as it wasn't my Mum, MIL or anyone who would tittle tattle back to them.

Housequery1 · 19/05/2025 22:08

Close enough that you see each other at family occasions, but no need to speak everyday as you both have kids and lives to get on with.

It’s not due to desire it’s literally due to lack of nice housing to be fair. At what point would you rather be told would you rather be told before they put an offer in house or after?

Why embarrassed? If there’s not much choice ?

I’d sell them my house and move somewhere else!

BarleyMcGrew · 19/05/2025 22:11

I would think it was really off if it was an immediate family member. Why didn’t they even ask me what the place was like? Super weird.

But a cousin, I would be fine - although a bit strange that they didn’t want to get the gossip on what the place is like.

giddyauntie123 · 19/05/2025 22:11

yeah that's weird

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 19/05/2025 22:11

Parents:in laws round the corner pretty much already.

one cousin yes.

the rest could get to fuck.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 19/05/2025 22:11

If we had a good relationship I'd think k it a bit weird.
If we only spoke If our paths happened to cross I wouldn't care.

tuvamoodyson · 19/05/2025 22:11

No.

AlpacaMittens · 19/05/2025 22:12

I'd absolutely fucking hate it, regardless of who it was.
