To absolutely not want closer ties to Europe

What is the matter with Stammer toadying up to the EU. We voted Out. Has he forgotten. I switched the TV off when I heard the word contribution and free movement. Here we go again. Shafted and ripped off at every turn and following their dumb rules. It's groundhog day. I'm furious.

What do you want then?

Cnidarian · 19/05/2025 14:09

Cool cool

CillaBlackSmith · 19/05/2025 14:09

King Nigel will sort this out!

Snorlaxo · 19/05/2025 14:09

Which rule pisses you off?

Whiose · 19/05/2025 14:10

Who do you want us to have closer ties too? If not the countries who are our neighbours.

Shuttered · 19/05/2025 14:10

The consequences of Brexit have been predictably damaging, and significant numbers of those who voted for it did so on poor or misleading information, and have realised that a UK nirvana hasn’t ensued. The same referendum today would get a different result.

Hoppinggreen · 19/05/2025 14:11

Ok, thats nice for you
I think you will find a lot of people are quite happy about this - I am but I wish we could just rejoin but in the absence of that this will do for now.

Mightyhike · 19/05/2025 14:11

Yes we voted to leave the EU, but remember that it was incredibly close and nearly 50% wanted to stay. So I think that outside the EU but with close ties to the EU is a fair and democratic approach.

Some shit about bendy bananas I imagine

Sirzy · 19/05/2025 14:13

Because everything is going so well at the moment isn’t it!

we need to work with other countries. Isolating ourselves isn’t helpful!

PinkGardenParty · 19/05/2025 14:13

Oh God yeah, there might be forriners eh? Can't do with that sort of riff raff... 🙄🙄

Brexit was utterly fucking stupid and none of the touted benefits have actually materialized.

I just object to being governed by EU laws and the fact they could overturn decisions made in our courts. I don't want that.

If we don't 'toady up' to the EU, we need to do it to Trump or China instead. Is that what you'd prefer OP? The UK is too small a fish these days to go it alone.

I used bananas for scale, and bendy ones ruin it. 😜

Could you give some examples of this happening before Brexit please?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/05/2025 14:16

You’re not unreasonable to want whatever you want.

You’re unreasonable to think we voted on the terms of any relationship between UK and EU - it was just a “leave”/ “remain” vote with no details about the form it would take.

We’ll ask you again, what law didn’t you like? Not just some vague sweeping statement related to sovereignty.

Snickersnack1 · 19/05/2025 14:18

If you’re so desperate to live in a vulnerable isolated and impoverished country go live in one.
I’m just praying to goodness this government can do the right thing for this country on the world stage and not go into self-destruct mode again. So many of you have become brainwashed by right wing propaganda, it’s very concerning.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/05/2025 14:18

I think freedom of movement of goods, especially food, is a good thing. Businesses have faced a massive increase in barriers to trade which drives up prices. The reality is that we need to import food to feed ourselves. Businesses here are used to being able to sell in Europe. Essentially we are doing the same thing as before but with increased costs and administrative burdens.

Unless we are going to become self sufficient which is highly unlikely.

Oh ffs, this again...

This is possibly the first good thing done by Labour, let's celebrate it, even if it doesn't go far enough.
Then they should invest in a good campaign and hopefully reverse Brexit all together. As much as I hate Labour I'll vote for them in next GE if they promise to bring us back to EU.

You can ask as often as you like. I do not want to live under EU law.

This was a very good thing in many cases.

But I don't know where you have heard that we are to be 'governed' by EU Laws again. Perhaps provide a link?

nightmarepickle2025 · 19/05/2025 14:21

I don't want to live in a country in permanent irreversible economic decline, so we'll have to agree to differ.

AllPlayedOut · 19/05/2025 14:24

Do you mean the EU or Europe? I do wish that people would stop using them interchangeably. Because I hate to tell you this but we are still part of Europe as we are a European country. Either way YABVU.
