I’m starting to find all these deals between Trump and the dodgy Middle East nations quite scary. Latest being the AI deal with Abu Dhabi.

I stopped watching the news and listening to the radio when he was elected.

Anyone who isn’t seriously concerned about what the US government is doing has their head firmly in the sand, at best. YANBU.

But I can't do anything about it, so what's the point in worrying about it?

MeatRaffleRita · 15/05/2025 23:15

These adverts that mumsnet allow don't help if you're trying to avoid hysteria . . .

Being selective about where you get your news from is one thing but I don’t believe ‘just ignore the news’ is good advice. It’s important that people are informed.

PrimitivePerson · 15/05/2025 23:18

I don't care if people think I have my head in the sand for not watching the news all the time. I value my peace of mind, and I focus on stuff I can actually influence. My sister in law is a news junkie, and is the most miserable, scared and tense person I've ever met in my life. She's convinced the world is going to end any minute, and her fear makes her make stupid decisions.

Why?

If anything important is going on, I'll hear about it.

Flyswats · 15/05/2025 23:19

Yes, a lot of it is frightening.
I think this: He doesn't want a war, he just wants to line his own pockets.

And that's what makes Trump tick..the dollar's.

Nothing dodgy at all op it's all about money and making sure America is in the game globally. Find your post a bit racist to be honest... those dodgy Arabs Confused

Er, there aren’t only Arabs in the ME

RobertaFirmino · 15/05/2025 23:25

I like to keep abreast of current affairs but at the same time, it's important to ignore any spin and just look for facts. Keep a close eye out for fascism too.

More worried about our own PM turning into Enoch Powell instead of sorting our collapsing social infrastructure. He seems
not to gaf if NHS continues to implode, schools can’t afford to keep lights on, universities go bankrupt never mind the impact of that on local economies (and the professions that rely on graduates). Oh and wanting to get more people into work while businesses and public sector collapse means we’re coming up on mass unemployment not seen in decades. Yes US is in a mess but so are we and instead of sorting it govt is playing silly games to placate an electorate they only understand from reading Twitter. Desperate times.

I came off Twitter as it was constant warnings about:
World War 3 and UK being invaded by terrorist armies posing as asylum seekers

I couldn’t sleep. I came off Twitter and within 2 days my insomnia disappeared

Thank you for passing those thoughts on right before bedtime 😂

Informed about what, though?

Watching any news channel is only going to inform you about the things the news channel wants to inform you about.

Aavalon57 · 15/05/2025 23:36

OP, have a listen to yesterday's episode of The Rest is Politics. They talk about Trump and his jaunt to the Middle East, but in a measured and analytical way.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/05/2025 23:37

@Netflixandchill25 what are you terrified of?

Mind you, I'm old enough to remember when some posters here thought Neom was a conspiracy theory.

HeddaGarbled · 15/05/2025 23:38

That says it all!

I have 2 ad blockers but I still just get these United News ones - oh and Lovehoney with the plastic people that look like they've never had sex in their lives 😄

Can you recommend a good ad blocker?

Really? You're terrified?

It's a coalition against China, and China and made it very clear that they are taking sides with Russia, North Korea and Iran etc but I guess you're more terrified of deals that will lead to economic collaboration with the likes of Saudi Arabia, UAE etc.

Did you have the same terrified reaction when Reeves ran to China a few weeks ago to lick their behinds and beg for investments?

Dealing with countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE are essential to the delicate balance in the Middle East like it or not and they are wealthy countries that will have an impact on the world as countries like the UK continue to decline while we argue over cutting fuel subsidy for elderly and disability benefits

Are you going to petition the UK government to cancel all Saudi and UAE investments in the UK including on sport teams like Newcastle United and all the money they have poured into UK boxing over the last few years?

Did you have the same terrified reaction with the Qatari's invested in Barclays during the financial crisis to bail them out and prevent the bank failing?

Give it a break and focus on your country and the many issues facing the UK. As things stand the UK will continue to lose relevance in the world, that should be your priority not the US making deals with Saudi.

His message was I will rather work with you economically that focus on wars and fighting but you're terrified!!!!

I use the DuckDuckGo browser on my Android phone. It pretty much blocks everything, certainly on most sites. I never see any ads on here at all.
