I’m starting to find all these deals between Trump and the dodgy Middle East nations quite scary. Latest being the AI deal with Abu Dhabi.

Another bunch of colonisers.

OP, if you must watch news, maybe try and broaden it a little. The BBC is not great on the issue of the US and Trump, they manage to give the impression that everything that happens in that administration is somehow unprecedented and awful. When in fact often other presidents do the same things, or they are completely normal things governments do.

That doesn't necessarily mean they are great, but if you weren't terrified by the same things under other presidents probably they are not so scary under Trump either. Overall, he seems to be much less inclined than other presidents to get into military conflicts, but he does seem to be very focused on staying out from under the thumb of China.

GildedRage · 16/05/2025 02:20

@TempestTost the agreement is 2%

StartEngineStop · 16/05/2025 02:55

But in all honesty, what does being "informed and concerned" actually achieve, besides keeping you awake at night?

It's not ignorance to avoid distressing news coverage, it's self-preservation. I don't watch news, but I read plenty of non-fiction and keep my brain challenged.

I think there's a lot of scared people out there who want others to be just as scared as they are. It's bit of a dick move, really. I overheard someone on a bus the other day who was massively fretting about cyber-attacks and seemed to think we'd all starve. Where does thinking like that get you, and what does it achieve? What can you actually do about any of this stuff?

Bugger all, is the answer. So...I'm tuning out, and doing positive things. I don't care if people think I'm ignorant.

I don’t think you’re ignorant for making the right choice for you, but you’ve come onto a thread where someone’s worried about something and are doubling down on their choice being the issue.

It’s really normal in the times we’re living in to have some level of anxiety about them. Talking about it is some people‘s way of coping. I would also say that talking about it ensures sure that people are aware, at least those that want to be. If we all had our heads in the sand it would be even more dangerous than it already is.

GildedRage · 16/05/2025 02:20

Is it, I was sure it was 5%, but I guess not, I stand corrected.

However, there is really nothing wrong with one member pushing others towards contributing more. The US can't force another country to spend any particular amount. There are obvious reasons that many European countries are looking at significantly increasing defense budgets.

TempestTost · 16/05/2025 03:20

OP, you haven't really said what it is about what Trump is doing in the ME that you find terrifying?

Anyone who isn’t seriously concerned about what the US government is doing has their head firmly in the sand, at best. YANBU.

Absolutely 💯

The powerful Arab states are all aruthoritarian regimes. So is China. US is on its way. AI in the wrong hands can be dangerous especially in terms of information and privacy of everyone. People use Meta's AI without realizing that if you ask it a question, it combs the person's entire FB and Instagram history to create a profile and continues to create and update it based on use, and you cannot delete it. Social media based in the states has the private information of people all over the world. All this is simply too interconnected to simply brush it off. You don't have to be hysterical, but it is important to be vigilant. Forewarned is forearmed and all that.

I'm in the Middle East, the economy here is growing here. We have companies from around the world pumping money into the economy and creating jobs. Over here it looks like the UK is in a total mess.

Here migrants have to have a job and get tested for diseases, get fingerprinted and get an ID card. There are no benefits everyone works. Migrants make countries here richer because they work and have zero government entitlements.

Before the UK starts criticising other countries it needs to sort itself out. It's universities are closing, all it's best taxpayers are leaving, it's got ridiculous levels of crime, courts are full, it's hospitals are broken, it's got a broken immigration system which is killing it's NHS and Benefits system, it's roads are full of potholes and congested, it's government wants to lower standards in schools, because of net zero madness it's energy bills are 3-4 times higher than the US and 5 times higher than the middle east.

Rather than putting two fingers up to Trump, people in the UK should be grateful for what it gets at the moment

InWalksBarberalla · 16/05/2025 05:59

Agree the middle east look to be doing well - it seems they are diversifying out of oil very successfully.

Nothing dodgy at all op it's all about money and making sure America is in the game globally. Find your post a bit racist to be honest... those dodgy Arabs Confused

Quite.

materialgworl · 16/05/2025 06:09

What’s dodgy about UAE exactly that isn’t found with this country let alone any other? What isn’t dodgy about politics?

No.
OP, a couple of tips:

  1. Stop watching TV news - it's all very dumbed down and sensationalist, anyway.
  2. Stop worrying about things over which you have no control. It's completely and utterly pointless so, if you stop doing it, you'll immediately feel much better.

Totally agree. I used to be like the OP, I was a bit consumed with it and did what you describe here and am carefree. Still shit my pants at low flying planes tho 😂

The weekly terrified thread.
Terrified of Trump.
Terrified of Farage.
Terrified of Badenoch.
Terrified of Starmer.
Terrified of Reform/Labour/Conservatives.
Terrified by the court ruling on trans men.
Terrified of changes to benefits/heating allowances/PIP/UC.
Terrified what our town centers have become.

Terrified by the rise of the Far Right! (Classic one that).

This post sums up pretty much what I am worried about.

And no, not dodgy “Arab” nations (?) but nations who import slaves to build their fancy skyscrapers and give rich families slaves under the guise of “nanny”, and “housekeeper”. Nations who do things like fund extremely poor quality, private residential foster homes where hundreds of children are neglected at best. Nations with no rights for women nor anyone considered vulnerable. You’re unexpectedly jobless? You’re out…

And the mentions of China - Qatar is allies with China?!

Feels like there are a lot of Trump fans on this post…

I would expect nothing less from Trump. If there's money on the table, he'll be there with his hand out. He's a mafia boss and a mega grifter.

It’s easy to be a rich country when your labourers are paid the equivalent of pennies per hour.

That very much depends on where you are in the Middle East and I’m pretty sure the average national from outside of the UAE and Saudi would tell you times are very hard indeed.

Weepixie · 16/05/2025 07:22

I agree with you regarding the salaries of labour workers but there is so much more needed to be a rich country than the salaries they’re paid. You need to take your blinkers off.

And don’t ever forget that behind every labourer in the Middle East there’s a company in their country of origin owned and run by their fellow countrymen (government officials included) who are complicit in them being here.

Also, that for every labourer here there’s a handful of others waiting to take their place such is the desire to be abroad earning way more than they earn at home.

Im very mindful of the situation but I’m also a realist.

Are they being prosecuted?

Pippa12 · 15/05/2025 22:15

Just don’t watch the news anymore, I don’t. I’ve decided there’s no point worrying about the things I can’t control!

I stopped for months too. It was making me really, really anxious and like you said, there is nothing I can do about any of it. It makes me feel ignorant but I don't see how knowing who is bombing who today or when climate change will cause my house to flood or how precaurious food supply is or how difficult my daughter's life will be when she grows up brings any benefits to my life.

Then I thought, I'd better take a look... it was the day India and Pakistan started kicking off. So now I'm back to living in my own (generally OK) bubble and knowing how lucky I am that I can do that.

Dodgy Middle East nations? What exactly makes them dodgy? @Netflixandchill25

Is this actually an attempt to be PC? Or are you being willfully ignorant?
You're seriously asking what's dodgy about middle Eastern nations?
I have to laugh at this point....some people's virtue signalling knows no boundaries 🤣
Next you'll be saying what a nice bloke Saddam Hussein was! 😅🤣

Firstly, you’re not funny. Secondly, as a Kurdish person I certainly do not think Saddam Hussein was a good bloke. Thirdly, this is nothing to do with being PC and everything to do with being sick of people making wildly racist assumptions about nations outside the West. The US is a supremely “dodgy” nation itself. So why did the OP frame it as if the US is functional? Abortion is no longer a constitutional right. Child marriage is still legal in most states. Hundred of thousands of people go bankrupt every year due to medical bills. There are vast swathes of corruption. Hun crime through the roof. School shootings. Domestic terrorism. Endemic racism. And so on and on and on. So which country is “dodgy” again?
