I’m starting to find all these deals between Trump and the dodgy Middle East nations quite scary. Latest being the AI deal with Abu Dhabi.

Terrified? No.

Laughing at the idiots who voted Trump into office to make their lives better (pull off the world's biggest and most barefaced heist) though 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Hoping he'll employ me to help count the money after his term ends ☺️.

Look at History, 1960s Cuban missile crisis, 4 minute warnings, 1980s IRA murders, today is no less terrifying than those days and we survived. I was recall at the height of the Cuban missile crisis we knew there was an ultimatum on the table and there was a real fear that there could be nuclear war before the end of school.

Pyew · 16/05/2025 13:30

I thought he was after a plane from them. Not much to worry about, the guy's always getting handouts.

Nelson Mandela was not a terrorist.

Whether or not Mandela, or any other leader, was a terrorist always depends on one's position, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Did the Nazis consider the French Resistance to be freedom fighters or terrorists?

Dodgy Middle East nations? What exactly makes them dodgy? @Netflixandchill25

Where to start?

How about with Qatar - which has been a key financial supporter of Hamas, giving them more than $1.8 billion over the last couple of decades.

My news consumption is limited to the BBC app!

haha no wonder you’re “terrified” if that’s the drivel you’ve been consuming. Spread your wings a bit.

Firstly, I was referring to your post where you said you didn't know which Arab countries OP was referring to. I pointed out that her post alluded to which countries these were. As for the US - it is precisely for the reasons that you give that makes the deal makings even more dangerous. Whataboutism is a lame argument. I am merely pointing out that the narrow issue that the OP has raised i.e. The US, The Arab nations in question, and AI is a matter of concern. If you think it isn't, that's your prerogative.

Edited

It’s not whataboutery to point out the rank hypocrisy that always abounds on these threads. The West is still under the misapprehension that it has some moral superiority over the rest of the world when it is blatantly not the case. The US is a country that has huge amounts of corruption, gerrymandering, lobbying, voter suppression and not to mention even a - albeit laughable - attempt at a coup not that long ago. If all of that had been happening in say, Iran, the US would have been the first lining up with the bombs. So framing the argument as the US versus “dodgy” countries is insulting, inaccurate and racist.

Calling them “dodgy Middle Eastern countries” is racist. I am not in favour of any of the regimes. But I am not making moral judgements based upon my prejudices.

Are you seriously trying to make a point about another country’s warmongering in a thread about the US? Really? War is America’s currency. But which is the dodgy one again?

They obviously don't know about the US training and funding terrorist groups.

Whatever you have said in this comment is not relevant to what I said. Again,I addressed the question of which countries the OP was referring to, It was clear to me, even if it wasn't to you. I don't see the point of you going on about things to me that I never raised anywhere on this thread. I never said anything about th word "dodgy" either. Take it up with those who did.

You literally said ‘Whataboutism is a lame argument’ so I responded to you on that point. Why are you trying to backtrack now?

It’s utterly mind blowing to me. But let me guess, when other countries do it it’s terrorism. When the US does it it’s what? Justice? It’s sickening.

Nor about all the US interference in the ME which partly led to this shit show.

Netflixandchill25 · 16/05/2025 09:39

History. Not present day. That’s like judging all Germans on the holocaust. Grow up.

There is a reason why….in the PRESENT day, so many companies in the wealthy West offshore to poorer countries.

Gissah · 16/05/2025 15:11

I find the cognitive dissonance astounding, the west has no legs to stand on or fingers to point in the morality game. There's not a country on earth without dirty laundry. If we were purely basing trade on morality then we would have sanctions on the US. Ireland would have sanctions on us. The whole of the middle east should have sanctions on the US and the UK. But no, it's just those dodgy middle eastern countries.

Love from me and my dodgy Khaleeji children x

No, my whataboutism for what you said in your first response to me which was irrelevant to begin with. For the third time, my response was to the question "which Arab countries". I thought OP made it clear. So talking about the UK and US was irrelevant.

I'll try to type slowly.

1.First YOU wrote: what about the UK? What about the US? in response to my first comment. That was irrelevant from the get go and I said whataboutism was lame.

2.. Writing about Iran or whatever in your second response, doesn't make it anymore relevant to my initial post, and my first response stands.

3.No matter how many times you keep coming at me, your responses are still irrelevant to my first comment, which is AGAIN about which Arab countries OP was referring to. That and ONLY that.

If you still don't get it, I'm afraid I can't help you. You can keep replying of course if that will help you.

A colonisers position is never valid.

In your opinion.

Todayisaday · 16/05/2025 15:38

Do you know much about the middle east OP?
Stop reading bbc news (basic and somewhat biased news) and broaden your understanding of the world.
Read the economist, watch al jazeera, generally broaden where you get your news from. You need to read from a variety of sources and perspectives to form an opinion.
Just watching bbc news is not giving you the full picture.

Verv · 16/05/2025 15:39

Not even faintly terrified. The US has been in arms cahoots with the M.E for ages. Overtly since at least Reagan era.
Literally nothing is new here.

In the context of the colonisation of South Africa/ apartheid only a racist would think that a colonisers position is valid.

Whataboutery will get you nowhere.

Well I guess that means that any Brit’s opinion on the US in this thread is irrelevant.
