How much rent?

MidnightBloom · 24/01/2025 23:56

Me and dh were just talking about how much private rent is these days. I was shocked when dh said private rents for a three bedroom house would be around £500 per month uk wide Confused

How much is private rents roughly in your rough area (put this because I understand people don't want to say there location)

Am I being unreasonable to say private rent for a 3 bed would be around 1k uk wide?

You are not being unreasonable your dh is right.

OldTinHat · 25/01/2025 09:00

I'm in the SE, on the coast. A single room in a house share starts from £600 pm.

Truth25 · 25/01/2025 09:01

I'm in NW London and it's about 4-6k + for a decent 3 bed.

Noi · 25/01/2025 09:03

Does he know he’s an idiot or? 😂

Phineyj · 25/01/2025 09:08

It's about £1,500 pcm for a 2 bed here in outer London!

TunnocksOrDeath · 25/01/2025 09:08

I was paying £1250 /month for a one bed flat in zone 3 in London 12 years ago! The flat itself was concrete construction and ex-council, but in a really nice area.

Doggymummar · 25/01/2025 09:09

£1409 for a two bed bungalow

Purpleturtle46 · 25/01/2025 09:11

My friend just per her 3 bed small end terrace new build up for rent in a shit hole of an area for £1650 a month!

BackToRealitySigh · 25/01/2025 09:12

The house next door to me was about £2k years ago when the family moved in. Family friends have just moved and are paying around £2.5k.
It's awful - impossible to save for deposit etc and pay this much rent. People must be really struggling.

JMSA · 25/01/2025 09:12

The monthly rent for my area in the UK would be around £2,500.

The reason I put uk wide is because we are in Scotland and he thinks the uk private rents are all equal. Interested to see if there is a difference per country, region, county's etc.

That’s his first problem. A decade ago I paid over £600 for a room in a flat in London Zone 2. Dread to think what the cost would be now.

wendywoopywoo222 · 25/01/2025 09:18

On the south coast.

800 for a en-suite bedroom in a shared house. 1600 -1700 for a small three bedroom house.

It's madness.

For all those who's areas are 1k, 2k, 3k plus for a rental, how do those on minimum wage jobs afford property? It's insane.

I became homeless when I divorced on £35000 a year salary. In Brighton I couldn't rent anywhere I wanted to live at one beds were about £1400 before bills. Moved into air BnB at £65 a night till I found a house share for £800 a month that didn't need a deposit and 30x month rent annual salary. This was over a decade ago.

Hibernatingtilspring · 25/01/2025 09:28

I think a lot of people don't realise how much the rent crisis has affected the whole country, not just London or areas where there are high paying jobs.

Cheapest 3 bed in Salford where I'm from, type of house you'd see on the Corrie intro -red terrace straight onto the street, backyard onto an alley - is £1150pcm. Most are more.

Where I live now, an unremarkable northern town an hour from Manchester where a lot of the local work is still factory work, cheapest 2 bed is £950 if you're lucky, and a 3 bed terrace would be £1250. That would still be two bed and box, no driveway or front garden. If you want a typical modern semi it would be £1400pcm minimum.

I saw an article in the Manchester paper about affordability of minimum wage, and the cheapest houses to rent they found within greater Manchester (so including fairly impoverished places like Oldham, Rochdale etc, not just places close to the city) were £750+ and they were on the outskirts in places like Bolton, anything that was an affordable commute to the city centre was a lot more.

MumofSpud · 25/01/2025 09:31

Where I am a 2 bed flat is £1400 a month

Hibernatingtilspring · 25/01/2025 09:31

Also if he were to look on right move, he might think you can get a Salford house for £600-800pcm.
If you actually click into the adverts, that's what they're charging for rooms in HMO student house shares. Not refurbed houseshares or fancy flats, just £600-800 to rent a room in a Salford terrace. It's awful.

Phineyj · 25/01/2025 09:32

The answer would be readily available on Rightmove of course!

justbeingasmartarse · 25/01/2025 09:34

£1000 for a one bed roomed flat (London)

Feelingstrange2 · 25/01/2025 09:34

I was quoted 1200pm for a 3 bed detached in a medium priced area yesterday.

Miley1967 · 25/01/2025 09:34

East midlands and it would be around £900- £1k per month for a three bed.

Snoopibird · 25/01/2025 09:35

I had a 4 bed semi detached south east for £2200. Now in a 5 bed £2850. But it is much larger.

Intheoldendays · 25/01/2025 09:36

The whole student house is appalling too. Dd is looking for a 2nd year house ans they almost took one - it was 190 a week each plus bills in a corrie esque 2 bed, with the front room turned into another tiny bedroom, tiny bathroom off the kitchen and with a 450 deposit each. It's shit

nachocheese · 25/01/2025 09:36

The four properties available for rent in my immediate area (small Derbyshire town) are between £900 and £1350

Snapncrackle · 25/01/2025 09:43

3 bed house where I live anything from 1600 - 2k plus

1bed flat 1k -1400 depending on area
2bed flat 1500 -2 k plus depending on the area

my son and his partner have a lodger who is paying 700 a month for a large double room in a really gorgeous house

Room share / HMO anything from 500 -900

Nannyfannybanny · 25/01/2025 09:43
