How much rent?

MidnightBloom · 24/01/2025 23:56

Me and dh were just talking about how much private rent is these days. I was shocked when dh said private rents for a three bedroom house would be around £500 per month uk wide Confused

How much is private rents roughly in your rough area (put this because I understand people don't want to say there location)

Am I being unreasonable to say private rent for a 3 bed would be around 1k uk wide?

You are not being unreasonable your dh is right.

What is your husband smoking?

Biffsboys · 25/01/2025 01:47

We live in the outskirts of Glasgow and a 3 bed semi is up for rent for £1000 per month

bridgetreilly · 25/01/2025 00:59

Well, I found 3bed houses on Rightmove from £450 up to £2500 per month. Perhaps you could just introduce DP to the internet?

I think he needs it 🤣

On a serious note I started this thread for real human interaction and information. I never get people on mumsnet saying use Google/no need to post, it's a bit like going into M&S and shouting everyone go to Tesco. Mumsnet is someone's business at the end of the day.

3k for a 3 bed now north london. About 5 yrs ago when we were renting it was 2k. The rise in the last 2 yrs is a problem

RocketNan · 25/01/2025 01:57

You’d get nothing for £500 here.

Thursa · 25/01/2025 02:02

I haven’t lived in Scotland for 12 years and at that time I paid £450 a month for a tiny three bedroom ex-council house.

user1473878824 · 25/01/2025 02:05

Sit down, OP, I’m going to tell you all about this place called “London”.

Bazinga007 · 25/01/2025 02:18

It would be about £2k where I am in Hertfordshire, just inside the M25.

MidnightBloom · 25/01/2025 02:20

🤣🤣🤣

Is that's what's called the big smoke?

@user1473878824 edited to tag you as it didn't work to quote you.

It’s around 1 to 1.2k per month where I live for somewhere decent. If you want to live in the grim bit of town it’s more like £850 per month.

It’s that there 4k for a four bed London yes

Snippit · 25/01/2025 05:21

I live in North Derbyshire and a 3 bed semi is around £800 to £900 a month. A one bed flat is approximately £600.

We rent our flat to my nephew at a much reduced price, fully furnished, he’s a very happy bunny and I have a brilliant tenant 🤗

Zanzara · 25/01/2025 05:43

@HereForTheAnimals that looks very cheap to me for North Leeds.

EvilNextDoor · 25/01/2025 06:02

A quick gander at right move, 3 beds range from £1,625-2,900 per month!!

Renting around here isn’t cheap, but then neither are the houses to buy

nicslackey1 · 25/01/2025 06:10

£430 for a 3 bedroom semi detached bungalow in nice area, near sea and has decent garden, Northern Ireland,

reichs79 · 25/01/2025 06:18

For all those who's areas are 1k, 2k, 3k plus for a rental, how do those on minimum wage jobs afford property? It's insane.

Kingofthetyrantlizards · 25/01/2025 06:22

I've just looked it up on rightmove... private rent a 3 bed house where I am is anywhere been £2k and £3k (home counties)

Completelyjo · 25/01/2025 06:27

MidnightBloom · 25/01/2025 00:02

The reason I put uk wide is because we are in Scotland and he thinks the uk private rents are all equal. Interested to see if there is a difference per country, region, county's etc.

Surely no adult can be that stupid though. Does your DH not think they property prices vary across the UK?
Why does he think rent wouldn’t?

This is from the 2024 ONS report.

For Great Britain in February 2024, the average private rent was highest for detached properties (£1,438) and lowest for flats and maisonettes (£1,201). Average private rent was highest for properties with four or more bedrooms (£1,901) and lowest for properties with one bedroom (£987).

MikeRafone · 25/01/2025 06:32

£1600 for a 3 bed up north

They can’t pass the affordability test, so can’t rent privately in many cases

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/01/2025 06:44

Ah ha ha ha, £500 for a 3 bed house? I paid £450 per month for a room in a 3 bed flat in South London in 2004. It wasn't a fancy area either, we had a crack house opposite us for the first year.

Fizbosshoes · 25/01/2025 07:37

My flat mates paid £500/month for a room in 2002! (My room was cheaper because it was smaller)
London suburbs
I was an apprentice at the time so not well paid

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 25/01/2025 07:49

Where I am in Essex they range from £1300 for a small terraced to £1800 for a slightly bigger semi detached)

atesomanybananas · 25/01/2025 08:00

Just checked on Rightmove. Northwest .. £1,150 - £2,000 pm. £500 would be a single room in a shared house.
