How much rent?

MidnightBloom · 24/01/2025 23:56

Me and dh were just talking about how much private rent is these days. I was shocked when dh said private rents for a three bedroom house would be around £500 per month uk wide Confused

How much is private rents roughly in your rough area (put this because I understand people don't want to say there location)

Am I being unreasonable to say private rent for a 3 bed would be around 1k uk wide?

You are not being unreasonable your dh is right.

A 3 bed house is circa £1500 a month in a rougher part of the city

Your DH is WAY out OP! My daughter rents a tiny 2 bed flat in Hampshire and pays £1,200 p.m!

Same.

mindutopia · 25/01/2025 09:47

Our shitty draughty 3 bed cottage was £650 pcm about 12 years ago. 😂 The 3 bed we rented before we bought our current house is now £1650 pcm. We’re in a not posh part of the south west.

sunshine244 · 25/01/2025 09:50

I reckoned it would be about £800 here in my part of Scotland for a 3 bed. Totally shocked to find that even 2 bed was £950.

I'm so glad I bought a decade ago. Before that I was paying £450 for big 2 bed flat.

mondaytosunday · 25/01/2025 09:53

Three bed terrace around my area (SW London) is £3500/month.
I own a very small (less than 600sqft) flat in Fulham that rents for £2850/month.
Another 900sq ft flat in Hastings rents for £1000/month.
My DD has just signed to rent a shared house in Durham - 1950s terrace in typical student condition - total is £2930/month (four beds)...
So average really doesn't mean anything. It's location location location.

PineappleCoconut · 25/01/2025 09:53

Near us a two bed flat is £1200+ pcm

And we aren't in London, but commuter belt small town.

I have a couple of 2 bed flats in London that rent for £2500ish pcm

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/01/2025 09:56

We are in Scotland and he thinks the uk private rents are all equal

I can't begin to understand why he'd think that when a few seconds of googling would show it's so mistaken

I believe (?) there's a cap on rent increases in Scotland, but surely he must realise that not everywhere has the same legislation?

Titasaducksarse · 25/01/2025 09:56

South Wales, 20 miles west from Cardiff so coastal. 3 bed £900 minimum.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/01/2025 10:02

We have a couple of two bed small houses with parking and a garden in SW18, and they are £2750 pcm. Here in Surrey a 3 bed house or flat would be a shade cheaper but an exceptional one could be more.

DS and DIL are paying £2150 for a very nice 2 bed flat in a sought after northern City. It's central.

Lanawashington · 25/01/2025 10:05

8 years ago I rented a room in a shared house Weston-super-mare for £300pm all bills included. The landlord now rents them out at £700! For one tiny bedroom in a shared house!

Average rent for a 3 bed where I am now in Somerset is about £1.2 - £1.5k

hettie · 25/01/2025 10:05

Well I am in an expensive city in the south west but yeah your dh is delusional. Rent would be £1800 to £2800 for a 3 bed terrace.... There are more expensive and cheaper areas but for the bog standard Mumsnet middle-class this is what you'd pay.

MidnightBloom · 25/01/2025 10:05

Surely something needs to happen about these crazy prices soon. How on earth can people pay those rent prices, childcare, bills, food and all the rest of it. How can people save for a eye watering house deposit?

There must be so many people trapped in private renting. I know there's a push to build more social housing but that's not going to scratch the surface of this problem.

£1600+ for a three-bed house here.

Surely your husband can spend 5 minutes looking at Rightmove to see he is wrong?! Does he really think that the whole of the country has fixed prices everywhere for rent-that's bizarre?!

sashh · 25/01/2025 10:08

20+ years ago I was paying that for a studio, it was in London but nothing special.

Intheoldendays · 25/01/2025 10:13

Talking about the 'olden days' (!) I moved into town form home aged 20. I shared a lovelymhousebwithbtwo others and paid £60 a week Inc bills for the smallest room. I did only earn £360 a month though.

As a single parent in the early 90s I rented a 2 bed in a really nice part of town - £320 a month. Now over 1500 a month.

No way could I or anyone on a low wage trying to have a reasonable life do that now. Even with 'top ups' i know and work with younger people who really struggle on a daily basis

TidyingThePantry · 25/01/2025 10:14

South Wales - £795-£1200

ShirkingFromHome95 · 25/01/2025 10:36

I pay £615 for a nice one bedroom maisonette in a cheap part of the country and know the person above me is paying £50 more a month. My landlord has about seven properties and I get on with him so I think he just keeps it like it is as he's rich and not too bothered. Your husband is way out.

Also, I think the poll is a bit confusing. 'not being unreasonable' would usually be to say that you're right.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/01/2025 10:46

£2k for a two bed her, small. Why we can't afford to divorce.

Mahanii · 25/01/2025 10:50

£1200 for a 3 bed in Manchester and I'm delighted with that, it was the cheapest house I could find when I was looking.

PonyPatter44 · 25/01/2025 10:53

A 3-bed house in Milton Keynes costs £1400-£2000/month at the moment. Its absolutely insane.

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 25/01/2025 10:56

Demand outstrips supply and will just continue to do so.

RuralSage · 25/01/2025 10:58

in my area its about 500-600 for 2 bed terrace, depending on area, but a lot get reduced, as there do not seem to be any takers at the higher silly prices that some come on at

Tallisker · 25/01/2025 11:08

There's one in Edinburgh for £6750pcm. It says it's 5 bed, but one of the bedroom is 8' x 7' so not really a liveable space.

I've recently seen a 2 bed in North Yorkshire with one decent bedroom and one tiny bedroom with barely enough room for a single bed, in the middle of nowhere for £850. The next day the estate agents put it up to £950 because of level of interest 😱

Housing costs are utterly ridiculous. I bought a flat in my 20s in my very early career which I couldn't afford now in my 50s.
