To find Philomena Cunk intensely irritating and everything that is wrong with society?

She's like that one irritating twat at the back of the class or on a tour that thinks they are the main character and asks stupid endless irritating questions when everyone else just wants to listen and learn something. They are thinking they're funny and clever but they're annoying and stupid AF.
She's admitted that in real life she finds history and science boring so she just mocks it and talks over educated, interesting people with "jokes" that have been done 100 times and the delinquent knuckle-dragging masses lap it up. Just another example of the media contributing to the dumbing down of society.

I'm sick of people saying she's "brilliant". No, professor Brian Cox is brilliant. Diane Morgan's idiotic character is just some knob sat there asking stupid questions to one of those most fascinating people on TV who pretty much has all the answers to life. It's depressing that people like her tbh.

Diane Morgan can do no wrong IMHO. I love Cunk and her mate Paul.

FoxtonFoxton · 14/01/2025 14:39

I really like Diane Morgan, but I can't stand Cunk. I find it totally unwatchable and toe curling, I even have to quickly skip past if a clip comes up on instagram.

PersephonesPomegranate · 14/01/2025 14:39

I agree. I like Diane Morgan, in that when you see her being interviewed as herself, she is amusing and entertaining to listen to. I think she seems down to earth, humble and I enjoy her dry sense of humour.

I find the Philomena Cunk stuff cringey, though. I get second hand embarrassment and don't understand why making yourself look thick as mince is considered funny. Also, Ali G was doing this stuff about 15 years ago. It wasn't my cup of tea back then and less so now that it's been done to death.

Celestialwish · 14/01/2025 14:39

Agreed!
She keeps popping up on my YouTube feed at the moment to my chagrin.
Though, to be honest, I've never actually been able to sit through more than 30 seconds or so as her voice tends to get on my nerves!

Scautish · 14/01/2025 14:40

Love her and the academics - how they can keep a straight face I don’t know!

Not a fan of Cunk at all. Avoid where possible.

Arlanymor · 14/01/2025 14:40

Somewhat reminiscent of Dennis Pennis and Ali G - basically mocking the people she interacts with, it's not my kind of humour.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2025 14:41

Missing the point much op?

Diane Morgan is only one of a writing team so hardly fair to blame her, or a fictional character she plays.

Scautish · 14/01/2025 14:42

She’s not mocking them - it’s totally different from Ali G and Dennis Pennis! The academics are absolutely aware this is not serious!

zerogrey · 14/01/2025 14:42

How extremely dare you. 😭

PrincessAnne4Eva · 14/01/2025 14:43

She's taking the piss out of the completely idiotic presenters that some of these programmes have. I remember around 2005/2006, one BBC Breakfast news reporter had an interview with a woman who looked after Elizabethan costumes and when the woman said there was a risk of dust which is why the costumes weren't all out, I shit you not, out of all the questions she could have asked this expert on Elizabethan costumes, the "reporter" said "what IS dust? What are the risks of dust?" like it was some sort of big expose or something and wasted the entire segment. Those sort of dickheads are who she's taking the piss out of and I laugh because there are real people like her out there and the world needs to know how fucking stupid they are.

lilythesheep · 14/01/2025 14:43

The entire point is that she is a parody of the dumbing down 'presenter on a learning journey' that makes so many 'educational' programmes vapid and cringey. If you've watched enough of these programmes (which nowadays instead of being presented by an expert, have to pander to what they think the audience wants by using a minor tv personality who can't stop making it all about them) then the parody is hilarious.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/01/2025 14:44

Isn’t that sort of the point? She’s supposed to be extremely irritating?

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2025 14:45

Scautish · 14/01/2025 14:42

I agree. I found Ali G atrocious. But the academics on Cunk know what it’s about. That’s the difference.

Cunk isn’t mocking the academics. It’s mocking the exact people the op hates and the schlocky dumbed down documentaries they watch that they think makes them an expert.

MaggieBsBoat · 14/01/2025 14:46

Maybe OP is one of the people she is debunking? Just a thought…is that you Coxy?

SharpOpalNewt · 14/01/2025 14:47

Yes, OP, you have hit the nail squarely on the side.

People not watching things properly, totally misunderstanding the point of them then starting stupid threads on the internet to complain about the thing they have misunderstood is intensely irritating and absolutely what is wrong with society.

FuckOffCleanShirt · 14/01/2025 14:48

I thought Cunk was brilliant when it first came out. But it's over-baked now - everyone's in on the joke and she's moved beyond parodying the documentary genre into just stupidness. "Cunk on Life" was painful, especially the weird cut-away bits where they clearly didn't have enough material to fill the time.

VoodooRajin · 14/01/2025 14:49

Ah so if we dont find her funny, thst means we've not understood? Righto

HorrorFan81 · 14/01/2025 14:49

Couldn't disagree more, find her hilarious 😆

NDerbys32 · 14/01/2025 14:50

Similar thoughts here. I avoid her.

I think you’re being a little sensitive. There are clearly some who haven’t understood premise as they are comparing to Ali G and suggesting she is mocking the academics.

but it’s absolutely fine for people not to find it funny!

VandalsTookTheHandlez · 14/01/2025 14:51

I love Cunk, but the first series where the experts had no idea what they were getting into was just a joy.

I don't know mind. Some of them deserve an Oscar for their portrayal of absolute bafflement, if they genuinely are in on the joke.

Perhaps those who don't like the show can stick to watching the programmes of Brian Cox and the like, and graciously accept that people enjoy different things. As for 'delinquent, knuckle-dragging masses'...Brian Sewell lives!

JimHalpertsWife · 14/01/2025 14:53

Cunk isn't my type of humour (generally a fan of DM), so I just don't watch it. It's really that simple to avoid TV shows you don't enjoy.

Mind, I do work with someone who was talking similarly to you about the character and it took me a while to realise she thought Cunk was the actual person, not a character.

Isn't it just what Borat et al used to do back in the early noughties? It's not a new style of comedy by any means.

miliop · 14/01/2025 14:54

It might be funny if the interviewees had no idea, like Brass Eye.

I am really bored of the media talking about itself, though. I don't find TV presenters/newspaper columnists nearly as fascinating as they find themselves.
