To find Philomena Cunk intensely irritating and everything that is wrong with society?

She's like that one irritating twat at the back of the class or on a tour that thinks they are the main character and asks stupid endless irritating questions when everyone else just wants to listen and learn something. They are thinking they're funny and clever but they're annoying and stupid AF.
She's admitted that in real life she finds history and science boring so she just mocks it and talks over educated, interesting people with "jokes" that have been done 100 times and the delinquent knuckle-dragging masses lap it up. Just another example of the media contributing to the dumbing down of society.

I'm sick of people saying she's "brilliant". No, professor Brian Cox is brilliant. Diane Morgan's idiotic character is just some knob sat there asking stupid questions to one of those most fascinating people on TV who pretty much has all the answers to life. It's depressing that people like her tbh.

I used to like her and Barry Shitpeas on Screen Wipe when it was short little sketches - and I can still laugh at some of the one liners people pick out. But the actual shows gets a bit tedious imho.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/01/2025 17:01

When she was a Charlie Brooker character she was quite funny.
But I saw it recently and it was embarrassing. She's literally wasting the time of decent people, academics, doctors, regarded highly in their field but not pompous or ripe for piss taking. They're not Tory ministers or arms dealers or tax dodging bankers. Just decent educated people that she's trying to humiliate.

WeylandYutani · 14/01/2025 17:03

She is a fictional character. Daft to compare her to actual people with scientific qualifications.

Scautish · 14/01/2025 17:05

that’s simply incorrect - you have misunderstood the show’s premise.

Do you really think Brian Cox didn’t know what Philomema Cunk was all about before he did Cunk on Life?? As well as the professors who had been on previous series? Have a think about it……

But she doesn't just ask stupid questions.

I've seen a few clips from her American history show.
"They call it the land of the free, which must be a surprise to all the slaves"
"They believe in manifest destiny, which is the belief that god wants them to go west and claim back the land from all the native Americans he put there first by mistake"

Those were cracking lines

I think some ppl are missing this aspect entirely. She does it with a lot of things & it's so effective BECAUSE the otherwise idiotic & childlike questions & musings put you on the back foot as the viewer. There are quite a few moments when you go 'oof' & wince at the accuracy they're sneaking in the script with wide-eye innocence.

One thing you cannot accuse her or Charlie Brooker of is being actually stupid, the writing is far cleverer than ppl like OP care to notice.

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 14/01/2025 17:14

Exactly
I like it when the academics try and engage with her at her level, I can't give ab example but sometimes their efforts to explain something to her, apparently in good faith (I know they know really) are quite thought provoking/illuminating
I think that's where Brian Cox was disappointing, he just bluntly contradicted her which wasn't amusing or interesting at all.

beetr00 · 14/01/2025 17:20

Everyone does know that Diane Morgan is an actress, surely.

It is Charlie Brooker the "satirist" who owns and has written this programme!!

He's as funny as Ben Elton.........

SecretChipmunk · 14/01/2025 17:25

Most of the time I don’t find it very funny but I did have a good laugh when she asked if the universe came out of a big bag.

I work in heritage and me and my colleagues think she's brilliant! 🤣🤣

What has you working in heritage got to do with anything? Confused

Ive seen a few clips and understand the concept, she's mocking glib presenters wasting airtime asking vapid questions, not duping experts who are supposed to be there in good faith a la Ali G.

I just don't think it's funny and would prefer that substantive questions were asked in an engaging way whether that's comedy or not.

I’d have thought would be more challenging to make into a comedy programme 🤔

Thing is, whilst I get that Cunk is just satire/a character, (like Barry Shitpeas,) the problem for me is that she isn't funny. Neither is Barry Shitpeas. They are both shit.

Gowlett · 14/01/2025 17:33

Never heard of this person, real or a TV character?

Do you not understand satire???

Cunk is lampooning the idiots you describe. Asking stupid questions of the brilliant people she gets to meet is exactly the point. Ye gods.

RubberDuckyURtheone · 14/01/2025 17:34

Used to like the short bits she did in screenwipe with Charlie Brooker years ago where it felt like she was parodying documentary makers and doing it well but wouldn't watch her now, find it pretty cringey. It's one joke repeated ad nauseum really

Hungryheart2025 · 14/01/2025 17:38

I agree, she's quite crass, it's really pointless. I think that Ali G did it a lot better, at least initially, he took on the pompous and pretentious who were using him for a bit of cread.

Boeufsurletoit · 14/01/2025 17:42

I think the laughs are based on the audience feeling superior to the character, more than on the jokes themselves. That's where my discomfort comes from. She's not playing a flat earther or similar really, is she? Just someone who is generally uncultured and who repeatedly gets the wrong end of the stick.

OneBadKitty · 14/01/2025 17:50

I find it hilarious! Cunk talking to Brian Cox on the Christmas special was comedy genius and kudos to him for playing along for a second time. His deadpan expression was beyond brilliant.

LunaNorth · 14/01/2025 17:51

The one where her eyes filled with tears when she learned about nuclear weapons was very moving.

No33 · 14/01/2025 17:51

She's what is wrong with society? 🤣

Okay.

Exactly, he's done it twice, yet op is falling over herself to feel sorry for him 🤣

Wendolino · 14/01/2025 17:53

I really like Diane Morgan, especially as Mandy, but Cunk is not her finest hour. It's not funny and it's boring. In my humble opinion, of course.

You'd have to watch Cunk on Earth to understand.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/01/2025 18:00

I don’t generally interpret her like this. She usually walks just the right side of not taking the Micky of those she interviews and making the character look stupid (which is the whole premise) instead.

There was one particular professional - a religious figure- where I thought she went wrong in the latest show - and instead tried to make him look foolish. I noticed that as it was a change and I didn’t like it as much.

Prof Brian Cox did really well with her I thought!

EleanorRavenclaw · 14/01/2025 18:04

I quite like Cunk in small doses. I do come away thinking that some of the academics she speaks to are fascinating people and Id like to look up more about them.
