To find Philomena Cunk intensely irritating and everything that is wrong with society?

She's like that one irritating twat at the back of the class or on a tour that thinks they are the main character and asks stupid endless irritating questions when everyone else just wants to listen and learn something. They are thinking they're funny and clever but they're annoying and stupid AF.
She's admitted that in real life she finds history and science boring so she just mocks it and talks over educated, interesting people with "jokes" that have been done 100 times and the delinquent knuckle-dragging masses lap it up. Just another example of the media contributing to the dumbing down of society.

I'm sick of people saying she's "brilliant". No, professor Brian Cox is brilliant. Diane Morgan's idiotic character is just some knob sat there asking stupid questions to one of those most fascinating people on TV who pretty much has all the answers to life. It's depressing that people like her tbh.

That's the point?

When she was a Charlie Brooker character she was quite funny.
But I saw it recently and it was embarrassing. She's literally wasting the time of decent people, academics, doctors, regarded highly in their field but not pompous or ripe for piss taking. They're not Tory ministers or arms dealers or tax dodging bankers. Just decent educated people that she's trying to humiliate.

It's still a Charlie Brooker character. Along with 8 or 9 other writers, including Diane Morgan.

The point has also passed you by.

vickylou78 · 14/01/2025 18:07

But isn't the point that it's a parody and supposed to be irritating! I loved it. Don't know how the academics kept a straight face!!

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2025 18:07

“I hear Brian Cox start to talk, and I don't want him to stop.”

I hear Brian Cox start to talk, and I wish he hadn’t started!

Abhannmor · 14/01/2025 18:08

I know what you mean but she still cracks me up sometimes. It's the facial expressions I can't help it.

Yerbumsaplum · 14/01/2025 18:10

My friend went through a phase of showing me her stuff on YouTube. She seemed a bit annoyed that I wasn't keen. But it could have been my contrary side not wanting to be told what's funny. So I might have another look!

AConcernedCitizen · 14/01/2025 18:11

OP acting like they're too smart for Cunk but being too dumb to get the joke is 10/10 😅

I much preferred the character when it was written by Charlie Brooker as a bit part on his series. Doesn't work as well longform, but each to their own!

You'll notice more bits in the "Charlie Brooker" voice though, like a pp posted somewhere above. It's not pure Cunk as was on Screen wipe, but the longer format allows for more. It's still written by many Wipe writers.

I definitely get what's meant to be the "joke". I just find it crass, overdone, and not very clever or creative. Low brow humour, only a short step up from fart jokes, and reeking of ignorance.

It's really not, but it's obviously not your thing, eh.

MummytoE · 14/01/2025 18:28

Get over yourself. Don't watch it if you don't like it

Dotto · 14/01/2025 18:28

What do you make of Al Murray's Pub Landlord, out of interest?

I agree

Even if its funny once. Its not funny twice. So that's hours and hours of it, which just isnt funny imo

Scautish · 14/01/2025 18:30

It’s absolutely fine to not like it!

but it’s not “fart joke” level - it’s obviously going over your head if you think that.

HorrorFan81 · 14/01/2025 18:31

I totally get why people might not like it. But you don't need to insult the people that do

Apples and oranges

Pardon? I'm not saying they're the same.. I'm genuinely interested if you find the Pub Landlord character funny, and if you can explain why/how..

GCAcademic · 14/01/2025 18:34

I love her, and so do all the academics I know.

But with everything you write op, you demonstrate that you don’t get the joke. So I’m confused.

Edited

You're not saying it outright but you're trying to catch me out one way or another. If I say I like him you will say I am a hypocrite and if I say I don't you will say it's clear you were correct that I do not understand that type of humour.

The truth is you can't do either because they are not comparitive enough to do so.

It is possible to find her funny and ALSO appreciate the genius of renowned scientists and academics.

Obviously they are not in the same league.

She is a comedian/ entertainer. Why on earth are you comparing them?

Exactly. OP (and some others) you’re taking this way too seriously. It’s meant to be funny.

I’m a huge fan of a lot of well known experts and scientists, including (like mentioned) Brian Cox, and I adore science and history. I’m a big DM fan too, and I enjoy her humour.

You can like both.

SexAndCakes · 14/01/2025 18:45

I found some of her earlier stuff funny, but the most recent (Clunk on Life, I think) is rubbish. It's lost what limited subtlety it had and there is no way the interviewees don't know they are being mocked now, which was the main source of the humour before. She also deliberately misspeaks so much in the voiceover that it's ridiculous and there is very little wit in it. A shame because I think Diane Morgan is pretty good but the whole thing is now almost a pastiche of itself.

The "our souls" bit was very overcooked
