To find Philomena Cunk intensely irritating and everything that is wrong with society?

She's like that one irritating twat at the back of the class or on a tour that thinks they are the main character and asks stupid endless irritating questions when everyone else just wants to listen and learn something. They are thinking they're funny and clever but they're annoying and stupid AF.
She's admitted that in real life she finds history and science boring so she just mocks it and talks over educated, interesting people with "jokes" that have been done 100 times and the delinquent knuckle-dragging masses lap it up. Just another example of the media contributing to the dumbing down of society.

I'm sick of people saying she's "brilliant". No, professor Brian Cox is brilliant. Diane Morgan's idiotic character is just some knob sat there asking stupid questions to one of those most fascinating people on TV who pretty much has all the answers to life. It's depressing that people like her tbh.

It's a comedy, she's meant to be irritating?

If it's a comedy is she not meant to be... funny? I didn't know that comedies are meant to be irritating. Humour of course is subjective but I've never heard of the view that comedies are meant to irritate.

And I am well aware that Cunk is a character played by Diane Morgan and I have mentioned Diane Morgan in my OP. It helps everyone if you read the whole post before you reply to it.

Just because it isn’t funny to you , it is to some . I’m sure there are numerous comedies that I dislike that other people find amusing .

SabreIsMyFave · 14/01/2025 15:39

100% agree. Cunk is as funny as piles. AWFUL. 😖 I am baffled that so many people disagree with you on here actually!

Although, as an actress I quite like her. Enjoyed her in AfterLife, and Phoenix Nights, and Mount Pleasant, but as a 'comedian' she leaves me cold.

Don't worry. It was clear you meant Cunk is unfunny/daft, not Diane Morgan herself. Smile

LionRumpus · 14/01/2025 15:41

It's ok if other people like things that you don't.

Bumcake · 14/01/2025 15:42

I like Diane Morgan in other stuff and on podcasts as herself, but I cannot abide Cunk. I turned it off after ten minutes and that was about seven minutes too long.

@Sacredhandbag Um... you do know the interviewees in her shows are in on the joke, don't you? They are told that she is a comedy character and they are briefed that she will ask incredibly stupid questions. They agree to answer those questions as if they were doing a serious interview.

So she's not making fun of anybody except ill-informed TV presenters. The experts are not being mocked or lampooned. They know it's a joke and that they are playing the straight man to her comic.

There's also a long, long tradition of comedy characters who derive their humour from being unlikeable, stupid or irritating. Think of David Brent, Alan Partridge, Jill from Nighty Night, Chris Morris on The Day Today etc. Cunk is in that tradition.

It's fine that you don't find it funny but it's a bit odd to find it 'depressing' that some people laugh at different jokes to you, and I can't see why you have a problem with the interviews when it's not the interviewees who are the subject of the joke, the interviewees are aware that it's a comedy, and the interviewees have been paid a fee.

Caerulea · 14/01/2025 15:45

delinquent knuckle-dragging masses

Righto 🤪

She's funny as fuck & I even managed to swipe that out on my phone by heaving my fists off the floor all by myself!

It's also perfectly possible to just not like things without being a dick about those that do - at which you've failed miserably. Unless it's Mrs Brown's Boys, obviously.

Well yes, I know that.

But it goes beyond differing tastes. I'm not bemoaning someone liking vanilla ice cream when I like strawberry. I made clear in my post that I feel there's an actual problem.

I am sorry if you didn't get that.

It's created by Charlie Brooker isn't it? TV parody is kind of his thing...

OK if you don't like it, but to claim it's "everything wrong with society" is a bit ridiculous.

But your problem seems to be that people like Professor Brian Cox are being duped, when in fact they are not being duped because they know that Diane Morgan is an actor playing the part of an incredibly stupid TV presenter and have agreed to take part in that and play along.

Floralnomad · 14/01/2025 15:51

@Sacredhandbag The fact that she is stupid and irritating is the comedy .

I don't have any issues with my comprehension, although your attempt to patronise me is noted.

No one died and made you the arbiter of good taste and intelligence. You can share your opinion, but you cannot justify your superiority because everyone else doesn't share it. There's a difference between your opinion and a fact.

Joking Not Funny GIF

That's the point of her

MuseumAssistant · 14/01/2025 15:54

I work in heritage and me and my colleagues think she's brilliant! 🤣🤣

Crikeyalmighty · 14/01/2025 15:55

Love the actress but don't like that concept at all

Welshiegreen · 14/01/2025 15:56

She's brilliant!

Waterboatlass · 14/01/2025 16:02

Ive seen a few clips and understand the concept, she's mocking glib presenters wasting airtime asking vapid questions, not duping experts who are supposed to be there in good faith a la Ali G.

I just don't think it's funny and would prefer that substantive questions were asked in an engaging way whether that's comedy or not.

When a PP said your tone is patronising they weren’t wrong! I’d go as far as supercilious.

I get you don’t like her. Or find her funny. But to imply that this character - and those that find her funny - are what’s wrong with society and anyone who laughs at her is a knuckle-dragging idiot is, well, to be very British about it, a bit much! I think it’s much more intelligent than a lot of comedy around at the moment. I won’t name names because it’s all subjective. As this thread has proved.

GivingUpFinally · 14/01/2025 16:04

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/01/2025 14:44

Isn’t that sort of the point? She’s supposed to be extremely irritating?

I thought this...thought that was the whole point of her character.

Tisthedamnseason · 14/01/2025 16:07

But she doesn't just ask stupid questions.

I've seen a few clips from her American history show.
"They call it the land of the free, which must be a surprise to all the slaves"
"They believe in manifest destiny, which is the belief that god wants them to go west and claim back the land from all the native Americans he put there first by mistake"

VeryQuaintIrene · 14/01/2025 16:09

I loved CUnk on Earth especially the ancient history bits (I am an ancient historian and thought it was very clever and funny.)
