To find Philomena Cunk intensely irritating and everything that is wrong with society?

She's like that one irritating twat at the back of the class or on a tour that thinks they are the main character and asks stupid endless irritating questions when everyone else just wants to listen and learn something. They are thinking they're funny and clever but they're annoying and stupid AF.
She's admitted that in real life she finds history and science boring so she just mocks it and talks over educated, interesting people with "jokes" that have been done 100 times and the delinquent knuckle-dragging masses lap it up. Just another example of the media contributing to the dumbing down of society.

I'm sick of people saying she's "brilliant". No, professor Brian Cox is brilliant. Diane Morgan's idiotic character is just some knob sat there asking stupid questions to one of those most fascinating people on TV who pretty much has all the answers to life. It's depressing that people like her tbh.

It is possible to find her funny and ALSO appreciate the genius of renowned scientists and academics.

Obviously they are not in the same league.

She is a comedian/ entertainer. Why on earth are you comparing them?

StartingOverIn2025 · 14/01/2025 14:57

Loved her in Mother Land but can't get on board with the Cunk thing unfortunately. A couple of bits made me exhale slightly harder out of my nose than normal, but not many and I gave up on it in the end.

AHFBridport · 14/01/2025 14:58

FuckOffCleanShirt · 14/01/2025 14:48

I thought Cunk was brilliant when it first came out. But it's over-baked now - everyone's in on the joke and she's moved beyond parodying the documentary genre into just stupidness. "Cunk on Life" was painful, especially the weird cut-away bits where they clearly didn't have enough material to fill the time.

Completely agree with this, used to love her but went to bed halfway through 'Cunk on Life' this Christmas. Heard one overegged double entendre, heard them all.

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 14/01/2025 14:59

Loved her in Motherland but not into Cunk or Mandy.

LlynTegid · 14/01/2025 14:59

A joke with a limited lifespan that has had its day.

I think you’re being a little sensitive. There are clearly some who haven’t understood premise as they are comparing to Ali G and suggesting she is mocking the academics.

but it’s absolutely fine for people not to find it funny!

Sorry i was responding to sharpopa, who said op didnt understand

DemonicCaveMaggot · 14/01/2025 15:01

I found her amusing for about 10 minutes and then it just seemed to be the same type of joke repeated ad infinitum. It was boring so I stopped watching her.

There are plenty of things I find funny that other people think are flat out stupid, 'What We Do in the Shadows' and the US version of The Office for instance, so if somebody finds her hilarious I'm not judging them.

Legodaisy · 14/01/2025 15:02

It’s supposed to be absurdist, and she is mocking anti-expert, anti-intellectual types (like dumbed-down presenters). She isn’t mocking the experts. I think that’s pretty straightforward when viewing it, but each to their own.

CranfordScones · 14/01/2025 15:07

The repetition wears thin very quickly. And, I agree, it's either venerating or deriding ignorance, depending on your point of view.

Arlanymor · 14/01/2025 15:12

VoodooRajin · 14/01/2025 14:49

Ah so if we dont find her funny, thst means we've not understood? Righto

Exactly, I get parody, it's just not my kind of humour.

OctopusSexArm · 14/01/2025 15:13

lilythesheep · 14/01/2025 14:43

The entire point is that she is a parody of the dumbing down 'presenter on a learning journey' that makes so many 'educational' programmes vapid and cringey. If you've watched enough of these programmes (which nowadays instead of being presented by an expert, have to pander to what they think the audience wants by using a minor tv personality who can't stop making it all about them) then the parody is hilarious.

So much this! She's a parody.

I swear to god people take things far too seriously now.

This is why decent satire has died.

Arlanymor · 14/01/2025 15:13

You can still mock people even if they are in on the joke you know.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2025 15:16

VandalsTookTheHandlez · 14/01/2025 14:51

I love Cunk, but the first series where the experts had no idea what they were getting into was just a joy.

So, what’s the most political thing that’s ever happened? 😂

Anyone who’s watched Lucy Worsley’s latest “Investigates” series will totally understand what Cunk is mocking. I know Worsley is an historian (so am I!) but she’s become such a parody of herself I can’t watch her now. The “investigates” show has a so much Cunk in it!

happygertie · 14/01/2025 15:17

Erm it's comedy, she is meant to be irritating. Cunk is a character, the comedienne / actress is Diane Morgan, don't confuse the two!

Floralnomad · 14/01/2025 15:20

You do realise it’s comedy , it’s not supposed to be an intellectual history or science programme .Totally agree with pp that the Christmas one this year was not very good , it’s probably had it’s day .

mumda · 14/01/2025 15:21

Watch the Brian Cox video. It's delightful.

Floralnomad · 14/01/2025 15:22

@BitOutOfPractice , I’m the same , used to really like a Lucy Worsley programme but there is so much bias in the new ones we can’t watch them . She needs to get back to her roots .

Boeufsurletoit · 14/01/2025 15:23

She's not mocking the academics, and anyway they can take a bit of ribbing. I don't like it that she's punching down on people who are less intellectual. I get it, and sometimes I enjoy it when the academic is particularly skilled at dealing with her (Ronald Hutton!) but I find it uncomfortable. Give it a few years and I don't think it will age well.

Sasskitty · 14/01/2025 15:23

Can’t bear her or her character here. She does love dogs though, so that’s plus.

CunkonEarth · 14/01/2025 15:25

I really like her (obvs!) but the new one was just way too long. She's better in shorter doses because the same type of joke can't really be stretched out for an hour.

Sacredhandbag · 14/01/2025 15:26

happygertie · 14/01/2025 15:17

If it's a comedy is she not meant to be... funny? I didn't know that comedies are meant to be irritating. Humour of course is subjective but I've never heard of the view that comedies are meant to irritate.

And I am well aware that Cunk is a character played by Diane Morgan and I have mentioned Diane Morgan in my OP. It helps everyone if you read the whole post before you reply to it.

I agree. I watched the others and thought they were hilarious, but Cunk on Luce was just cringe making.

I hate it with every fibre of my being. I don't think I've ever seen lovely Brian Cox smile so little :(

Somewhat reminiscent of Dennis Pennis and Ali G - basically mocking the people she interacts with, it's not my kind of humour.

The difference is these are very much in on it.
