To find Philomena Cunk intensely irritating and everything that is wrong with society?

She's like that one irritating twat at the back of the class or on a tour that thinks they are the main character and asks stupid endless irritating questions when everyone else just wants to listen and learn something. They are thinking they're funny and clever but they're annoying and stupid AF.
She's admitted that in real life she finds history and science boring so she just mocks it and talks over educated, interesting people with "jokes" that have been done 100 times and the delinquent knuckle-dragging masses lap it up. Just another example of the media contributing to the dumbing down of society.

I'm sick of people saying she's "brilliant". No, professor Brian Cox is brilliant. Diane Morgan's idiotic character is just some knob sat there asking stupid questions to one of those most fascinating people on TV who pretty much has all the answers to life. It's depressing that people like her tbh.

You're not saying it outright but you're trying to catch me out one way or another. If I say I like him you will say I am a hypocrite and if I say I don't you will say it's clear you were correct that I do not understand that type of humour.

The truth is you can't do either because they are not comparitive enough to do so.

I don't care about catching you out, but would be interested if you enjoy the parody of the Pub Landlord instead, as the writers also attempt to make him as idiotic as possible.

Is it the idiocy of Cunk you object to, or is it the satire of the idiocy that leaves you cold?

BobbyBiscuits · 14/01/2025 18:51

@Scautish the people she was joke interviewing I saw were just academics. The stuff she was doing wasn't funny. It was literally just wasting their time. It makes no difference whether they knew it was meant to be a joke or not. Because it wasn't funny enough and seemed pointless. Cringe worthy but not in a way like Ali G or whatever. Which I did laugh at when it first came out.

Caerulea · 14/01/2025 19:04

Sacredhandbag · 14/01/2025 18:24

I definitely get what's meant to be the "joke". I just find it crass, overdone, and not very clever or creative. Low brow humour, only a short step up from fart jokes, and reeking of ignorance.

Ahhhhh you're just trolling now, back under the bridge with you

VandalsTookTheHandlez · 14/01/2025 19:06

ItGhoul · 14/01/2025 15:45

@Sacredhandbag Um... you do know the interviewees in her shows are in on the joke, don't you? They are told that she is a comedy character and they are briefed that she will ask incredibly stupid questions. They agree to answer those questions as if they were doing a serious interview.

So she's not making fun of anybody except ill-informed TV presenters. The experts are not being mocked or lampooned. They know it's a joke and that they are playing the straight man to her comic.

There's also a long, long tradition of comedy characters who derive their humour from being unlikeable, stupid or irritating. Think of David Brent, Alan Partridge, Jill from Nighty Night, Chris Morris on The Day Today etc. Cunk is in that tradition.

It's fine that you don't find it funny but it's a bit odd to find it 'depressing' that some people laugh at different jokes to you, and I can't see why you have a problem with the interviews when it's not the interviewees who are the subject of the joke, the interviewees are aware that it's a comedy, and the interviewees have been paid a fee.

Edited

Actually, they aren't. Or at least, they weren't, I suspect now they realise what they're getting themselves into, but in the early days they were not told it was satire.
There was a wonderful interview with Diane Morgan about it from a few years ago where she discussed how they'd just sit and film, sometimes for an hour or more, a lot of her questions were ad libbed, and hope for great responses from the interviewee's.

Thats what made the first couple so bloody good because you could see the absolute bewilderment of the academics as she blathered on about her mate Paul etc.

Youtookmyhandle · 14/01/2025 19:19

The people who sit at the back of the class are the same people she takes the piss out of in interviews. At least that's my take.
I don't like most of her stuff, but I have laughed out loud at some of her comedy. Does that make me a knuckle-dragger?

Ah the old classic - "I don't agree with you, so you must be trolling"

YAB utterly U! I love Cunk. I also love Professor Cox but I'm glad to see that he can have a laugh at the ridiculousness of her questions. I love history and science in a serious capacity but I also love the mocking of it in Cunk.

Never heard of this person, real or a TV character?

Have you heard of Google?

Screamingabdabz · 14/01/2025 19:46

Ahhhh I get I now op. You’re ‘Mandy’ aren’t you? That’s exactly what she’d say. Go and moan to Lola next time you get your nails done…

Gowlett · 14/01/2025 20:06

Sorry, Derek. I’ll be off, now…

I genuinely have no idea who Mandy is. I've seen her mentioned a few times on this thread, I assume it's another character Diane Morgan plays. I've never seen it.

Just looked her up. Hilarious

LuckySantangelo35 · 14/01/2025 20:42

You sound a bit in love with Brian Cox Op @Sacredhandbag

LuckySantangelo35 · 14/01/2025 20:43

Sacredhandbag · 14/01/2025 15:28

I hate it with every fibre of my being. I don't think I've ever seen lovely Brian Cox smile so little :(

@Sacredhandbag

I'm sure he’ll get over it OP.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/01/2025 20:50

The delinquent knuckle dragging professor I share my life with says the op is interesting because it’s the sort of thing people used to say about people who liked Viz, which in his experience encompasses a lot of intellectuals.

I would love to know if the eminent academics who are on it more than once count as delinquent knuckle dragging masses, because presumably they too are lapping it up or they wouldn’t be on it.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 14/01/2025 20:50

I hate it when people look down on people for liking something different to them. You don't have to like it but don't assume people are stupid if they happen to enjoy it.

SoapySponge · 14/01/2025 20:51

It was a good joke the first couple of times but Cunk is now way past her sell-by date and the whole act stinks like rotten fish.

She needs to find a new act/character.

LittleBigHead · 14/01/2025 20:51

Well I was interviewed by her for one of her series, and I think she’s utterly brilliant.

As a fellow delinquent, knuckle dragging academic I agree with him! 😂

RainbowZebraWarrior · 14/01/2025 20:52

I've never been keen on this type of character. It always comes across as 'taking the piss out of, or imitating what they deem to be thick people'

Mind, I'm Autistic so my humour might be rather specific and lots of stuff goes over my head.

We are not worthy.
Did it make all the years of toil and struggle worth it?
