Gov refuses home office investigation into historic child sex abuse in Oldham

I've just read on x that Jess Phillips has formally declined Oldham council's request for the HO to investigate the grooming gangs in Oldham. Why on Earth would they do this? Apparently JP says it should be a local investigation? Clearly that is a conflict of interests and if the council are asking for help they should?

The only link I can find other than x is GB news (apologies).

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips has said Oldham should 'take its own approach' instead

@Gunnersforthecup

The government as far as I'm aware have not been as complicit in covering up mass rape and murder.

I can only think Belgium's white march travesty comes close.

Many in the EU want to leave it's not the shining light of wonder by any means and I think this travesty is a national shame yes.

Any society is judged by how it treats it's most vulnerable members.

Good speech now by Yvette cooper.
Thanks Elon

Yes. I can’t imagine it’s a coincidence that YC made that speech. It was very good, however seems that Elon has forced it out of them.

Badenoch is to the far right as Rayner is to the far left - not at all. It's just hyperbole.

Exactly. No one in government or even on the fringe is far anything. It’s all right or left of center.

CandlesOrangesRedribbon · 06/01/2025 18:04

Yc work between police and local council but what when family members and friend's reach into all those police and council

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 06/01/2025 18:11

I'll say again- you still haven't given an explanation of why Badenoch isn't far right.

Can you break down which of Badenoch's policies you'd consider far right?

CamelByCamel · 06/01/2025 18:12

Namechangetry · 06/01/2025 17:54

Rather than asking me to prove a negative, did I miss the part where you explained how Badenoch is far right? You being an expert on political science must know that would mean she is politically aligned to neo nazi, fascist, white supremacist ideology, that's pretty extreme so I'm sure examples of her stated views being on those lines are easy to come by?

Another post where you've failed to back up your claim! And this wouldn't really be proving a negative either, since it's not about evidence of absence. Badenoch has views, so it's simply a question of classifying them. As opposed to harrumphing.

It's interesting that you think potentially having more knowledge about political science than you must mean someone's an expert. Quite the ego you have there. I don't think this, myself. Your contributions so far haven't been very impressive, and this latest is no exception.

I'm surprised to hear you argue that far right must automatically mean being aligned to neo Nazi ideology. That's a strange view to take given that some societies have a far right that's not remotely Nazi aligned. Israel is one example. Certainly some on the far right are neo Nazi, but it's hardly a prerequisite. There are also far right movements whose members aren't even white, like RSS in India. These people are not white supremacist!

We don't have too much of a neo Nazi movement in the UK, thankfully, so the explanation @Alexandra2001 gave of where Kemi fits in our political spectrum is a more sensible one. She's on the far right in British politics. She's authoritarian, economically very right wing, wants limitations on maternity pay, doesn't like the ECHR and is a full on culture warrior.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 06/01/2025 18:16

She's on the far right in British politics. She's authoritarian, economically very right wing, wants limitations on maternity pay, doesn't like the ECHR and is a full on culture warrior.

So she's right-wing politically. That's not the same as far-right, a term so frequently bandied about as to no longer have any meaning.

Anyway this is rather a distraction from the actual topic of the mass rape of children by Pakistani men.

OneAmberFinch · 06/01/2025 18:16

"Far" right (or left for that matter) are terms that are relative to the Overton window in the general population.

"Let's massively increase immigration, particularly from culturally dissimilar countries" (i.e. Tory policy 2019-2024, supported by Badenoch and highlighted as a key point of difference between her and Jenrick in the leadership campaign) is neither objectively far right nor even right-wing relative to the population.

She's made a few comments about trans women and CRT that the Guardian thought were spicy, that's all.

The actual right wing isn't talking about "inquiries".

Alexandra2001 · 06/01/2025 18:17

Anyway, back to the subject, Labour now going to enact the recommendations of the previous report, commissioned by May.

Surely to be applauded? no? nothing to say?

Lucy Duckworth, herself a survivor of abuse is very pleased.

Gunnersforthecup · 06/01/2025 17:38

Now I didn't vote for Labour last election.

But I can't see how Starmer could do more damage to our international reputation than Cameron, Johnson, Truss etc - can you explain that to me???

Yes of course, Starmer looks like he is somehow implicated in racist mass rapes of children and is trying to cover it up. Ditto Southport. The economy is likely to crash. We could have mass power cuts (albeit tories has similar mad energy policies). No relationship with US the most powerful Western country as Labour have engaged in student politics over Trump for 8 years(sure he remembers that pathetic blimp they flew over London last time). All those worse than Bozos incompetence. Musk highlighting on X where he has 210m followers, 3 times the population of UK so most must be non UK.

They do know. As I say, one of the gang rape victims posted and asked people to stop making it a defence of one party over another. Quite right. There is blame all over here. The people who coordinate the trolling are well known and it has been raised before on this thread. It’s all there on chat for anyone who wants to view it to see what is actually happening. Despite the posters gaslighting you into imagining it’s not.

Not great optics for the site. It’s frankly disgusting.

Barr77 · 06/01/2025 18:20

CamelByCamel · 06/01/2025 17:17

Are there really? Where's your evidence of that?

The reality is, we have heard a lot from the far right in the last few days. Denial of that will get you nowhere. You are free of course not to like Starmers comments, but it is plain fact that there are people who are pissed off and concerned about the likes of Musk, Reform and extreme Tories like Kemi who were in government when the enquiry recommendations weren't followed. If you want to dispute the use of far right to describe these people, you'll need to explain why.

Are we in the student union? Where’s my pint?

The term "far right" seems to be applied to anyone deemed to be guilty of ‘wrong-think, and as such it’s losing its potency due to overuse.

J.K. Rowling has been called far-right just for defining what a woman is and defending sex-based rights. See Kathleen Stock, Julie Bindell (oh yes the left-wing feminist) are
deemed to far-right since they’re terrible TERFs.

Dave Chappelle was almost cancelled
for being far right, apparently Ricky Gervais too for having similar views. Far-right wing bigots obvs.

In fact, in your world of student politics, anyone who doesn't think as they ought must be "far-right."

Report the thread?

But i think you'll find that an internet forum is about debate, you know when people disagree.

MN has guidelines, one of which is PBP's shouldn't sneak back in and start threads again.

Also, use Google to find out what "trolling" actually is & you are also filling up the thread by posting nonsense.

I think we will just let the World Wide Web and the general population decide. Hopefully they will be louder than the Starmer echo chamber on here and lead to some form of justice.

Nah.

Starmer is not implicated in the rape/grooming stuff, that is hogwash. The historical stuff happened before he took office.

He did well to take control over the Southport stuff, despite right-wing elements trying hard to stir up unrest.

It is not his fault that the US somehow managed to elect Trump again.

None of this compares to the stunning incompetence of Johnson and Truss.

Musk owns X so who knows whether those figures are accurate.

So, no. None of that holds up.

I didn't even vote Labour, as I say, but I am willing to call out the nonsense.

========================

As for the rape/grooming, it is appalling that some people (including Musk)are using this awful situation as a pretext to attack and try to unseat a newly elected government.

For my part, I was rather surprised by how much fluffy conspiratorial nonsense Mumsnet is tolerating, presumably in the name of free speech.

I can't see how calling for another inquiry would benefit the victims very much, as it would tend to delay all the legal processes by years, and at huge expense.

We have had the inquiry, now let's put in place the recommendations.

I would be very happy to see some thought go into appropriate disposal/ punishment of the perps and support for the victims. Let's hope Labour can move forward with this.

If you want to dispute the use of far right to describe these people, you'll need to explain why.

I'd say the onus is on you to describe why you think they are far right. Or indeed define "far right".
Because otherwise it just sounds like a shorthand for "dismiss these people, they do wrongthinks".

I note no one, despite claiming to want justice for the victims of CSA, are interested in the very positive speech the Home Secretary made this evening.

Ah, so it's alright for you to question other people's morality and make pronunciations about what's 'normal', but nobody can do the same back? Mmmkay.

It's up to you whether you care about Starmer's comments on the far right. That's a matter of opinion. What you are not going to do is pretend that criticism of the far right amounts to criticism of anyone who's got concerns about how any political party has handled this.

Why did you ask MN to remove that comment? Is that how you deal with everything in life that you don’t agree with? Get it cancelled?

I’ll dial back the language if you like. I find it extraordinary that you would question my morality when you are on here, dominating these message boards, in an attempt to obfuscate and deflect attention from the government’s culpability in covering up the sadistic sexual torture of 250,000 white children by Muslim men.

How do you even reconcile that with your own view of yourself as a righteous, progressive intellectual?

Ah, this speech

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/01/06/child-groomers-tougher-sentences-yvette-cooper/

and

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/jan/06/yvette-cooper-says-she-will-force-professionals-to-report-child-sexual-abuse-claims (not behind a paywall)

"Child groomers are to be given longer prison sentences under tougher laws to be announced by Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary.
Grooming will be treated as a statutory aggravating factor when judges sentence offenders for specified child sex offences including rape and sexual assault.

"It will mean that judges will be required by law to hand down an additional length of time in jail on top of the sentence that the groomer receives for any sexual offence committed against the victim.
...
"It will also mean longer sentences for abusers who are part of the gangs but may not themselves have groomed a child, as a child having been groomed will be considered an aggravating factor in itself. The grooming will not have to be sexual."

That does sound good.
