Gov refuses home office investigation into historic child sex abuse in Oldham

I've just read on x that Jess Phillips has formally declined Oldham council's request for the HO to investigate the grooming gangs in Oldham. Why on Earth would they do this? Apparently JP says it should be a local investigation? Clearly that is a conflict of interests and if the council are asking for help they should?

The only link I can find other than x is GB news (apologies).

Labour REJECTS Oldham's call for Government inquiry into grooming gangs scandal

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips has said Oldham should 'take its own approach' instead

I saw Elon Musk's page earlier and was absolutely sickened. There are posts from at least one of the court cases and give graphic detail about what was done to an eleven year old girl. I don't think I've ever read a more horrific account of sexual violence. I have never understood why people weren't - or aren't - more angry? I assume most people agree with that Labour MP and think we should just ignore it "for the sake of diversity"? I can't imagine how those girls can ever recover - not even just from what those pigs did to them, but from knowing nobody cares and that people just wish they'd shut up.

OneLemonDog · 02/01/2025 00:59

I don't know much about the process, here, but isn't it just the case that there has already been a major and lengthy independent investigation, and the Government want to work on implementing its recommendations, rather than conducting an additional investigation? Anyone have any idea what the concerns with the first one were?

Perzival · 02/01/2025 00:59

OneAmberFinch · 02/01/2025 00:52

This has been going absolutely viral on twitter for the last day or so. Not just Oldham but the whole scandal.

There are screenshots of court documents of some of the cases and I am not normally a trigger warnings person but they are honestly horrific. "Grooming" is not the right word for it.

I wonder why it isn't being covered by more news agencies. I only came across it because I was bored and going through "trending".

If Oldham are left to their own investigation there will always be cries of it being not thorough enough. Surely an independent inquiry would be better?

I feel a bit like I've opened a can of worms which I wish I hadn't as I don't feel I know enough about the politics behind it all. I was just shocked that it had been refused.

This is just horrendous. The details from those reports are sickening.

dothedanceofjoy · 02/01/2025 00:56

Your phrasing is completely disingenuous. Do you mean who do I think should be permitted to express an opinion on social media about an outrageous years-long institutional failure to deal with the most depraved criminal behaviour imaginable? The answer to that is anyone who damn well wants to.

No, my question was as stated. Musk is part of the US government and he's calling for a British MP to be imprisoned and interfering in another countries politics.

You seem to think decisions made by the government are a free for all and foreign governments should freely tell us what to do.

Oldham council are going to do an investigation into what happened there and it's about time.

There is a long thread by the guy who made the GB News documentary about it - walking through the media coverup since 2004...

Atissues · 02/01/2025 01:02

The graphic details make me feel sick. The four men comment wtf. I remember this at the time and THAT was never mentioned in any press article that I remember.

Those poor girls. Those vile men - it’s like Giselle Pelicot - all these people abusing together. How do they find each other? How many are still raping? And plenty of Brits had a lot to say about the pelicot trial (quite rightly).

@OneLemonDog People have posted on X saying girls are still being raped.

They've had an independent inquiry already, I think?

Based on Phillips response, though, it sounds as though Oldham council had concerns about its findings.

CaptainBeanThief · 02/01/2025 01:06

I grew up in Oldham and believe me it is an awful place, still is.

Perzival · 02/01/2025 01:07

@OneLemonDog thank you

Agree the details are utterly horrific, it's sadistic torture, some of it. I'm glad the details are finally coming out, the cover up has been shameful. Those girls deserved so much more than how they were treated by the authorities.

paranoiaofpufflings · 02/01/2025 01:08

Isn't it that she's saying the inquiry into abuse in Oldham should be conducted and managed locally in Oldham, just as the Rotherham and Telford inquiries were managed locally in Rotherham and Telford? There has already been a national independent inquiry into wider CSA.

Perzival · 02/01/2025 01:14

Yes I think this maybe the case.

OP posts:
Atissues · 02/01/2025 01:15

But are Oldham part of the cover up? Surely Oldham shouldn’t investigate Oldham - it’s nonsense.

A man called Raja Miah has thanked Jk Rowling and says GM police have been complicit.

‘Very much appreciate you using your voice to amplify this national scandal. I'm afraid the allegations of police corruption are anything but allegations. In my hometown of Oldham
@gmpolice
have been weaponised against both survivors and campaigners. I spent just under 3 years on police bail before the last of the cases against me collapsed. My crime was refusing to look the other way to the gang rape of children. Senior
@UKLabour
politicians objected to my lawful campaigning for a Public Inquiry and targeting politicians at the ballot box. They had my home repeatedly dawn raided by the police’’

Thanks op for posting the GB news article. Im going to spend time reading up on this. It’s an absolute scandal. The hour of so I’ve been on this thread and X has really shocked me. This seems to be a huge cover up.

OneAmberFinch · 02/01/2025 01:17

Judging from twitter...

The issue is that the sheer level of anger from the public on this is not "let's have an inquiry" it's "let's riot, deport, bring back the death sentence for these monsters", this went viral after Elon Musk tweeted about it

And Jess Phillips picked today to announce the Oldham thing, which is just coincidental timing I think but comes across as "...and the UK government thinks this is some minor thing that can be sorted out quietly by the local council"

Perzival · 02/01/2025 01:24

I've reported the thread and asked for it to be taken down. I was just shocked and didn't fully understand the situation which I now see is much more complicated.

I do want those poor girls to get justice and for this to be investigated and spoke about. I don't support vawg. I just don't think I know enough about what is such a sensitive topic.

OP posts:
Atissues · 02/01/2025 01:25

I think the details were downplayed at the time. I watched the news every day during the rape scandals and i do not remember the 4 men. Broken bottles. Etc. It was sanitized as ‘grooming’. The girls were blamed! I think seeing those details would anger anyone who read them (assuming they aren’t a child rapist). But we are letting paedos walk free from jail in the U.K. I can see why people are angry. I’d be more concerned if people were not angry.

If I committed a crime in Spain or the USA I would expect to be deported. Why should Spain or the USA allow me to remain?

Atissues · 02/01/2025 01:26

I think the thread should remain. This is a women’s site and Thousands were raped. Maybe this thread will draw more attention to it.

Atissues · 02/01/2025 01:32

Charlie Peters GB news has posted a history on X if anyone wants to read it - I’m about to but wanted to share in case the thread goes poof.

Why on earth are you saying it should be deleted! What is complicated?

Utterly bizarre.

Sunworshiper · 02/01/2025 01:35

This is what kicked it all off.

These are the sentencing remarks of the Oxford child sex abuse ring, please be aware they are very very shocking and harrowing to read. 😢

Why on earth have you asked for this to be taken down?? It’s an absolute fucking scandal and it needs to be discussed in public. Politicians must not be allowed to hide this any longer.

Mumsnet is a site for women and it’s entirely appropriate that long-running organised sexual abuse of children be discussed. If there is possible corruption by authorities that needs to be investigated. No way am I standing by and letting them sweep this under the rug any more.

@mnhq please do NOT delete this thread. It is a worthwhile topic for discussion here.
