To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:24

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

What cleaning fee?? People do lots of things they're not meant to, vaping is just another one. Human nature. Also why would people vape in your house if you asked them not to, what sort of friends do you have that would do that?

The £100 penalty Premier Inn charges for vaping.

I don't have friends who vape but I see no moral difference between people vaping in a hotel room which prohibits vaping vs my house. Why is it OK to disrespect a stranger or a business rather than a friend?

Sure, people do all sorts of things they shouldn't do, many of which carry penalties and many of which make them dicks.

There's no cleaning fee because vaping is undetected in a hotel room, someone already said this and she works in a Premier Inn, and you're being ridiculous comparing vaping in someone's house to someone having a quick vape in a hotel room🤣Anyway ill continue vaping in the privacy of my hotel room thank you and I'll suffer the consequeces if for some highly unlikely reason I'm detected.

Why is vaping in someone's house different to in a hotel? I do not see the difference.

I'm sure you will continue, but that doesn't make it right.

Because I respect that people don't want people vaping in their home and wouldn't dream of it, but if I'm in the privacy of my own hotel room.and it's not hurting anyone whatsoever and noone is offended because noone knows I will do it, simple as

What if that consequence is the fire brigade being called to a false alarm and not being available for an actual fire. Your selfish attitude is unbelievable.
And don’t think it doesn’t happen, a house in our village was completely destroyed by fire as the fire brigade took longer to get here as they were at a false alarm - thankfully the family had managed to get out.

There's no difference between secretly vaping in someone's spare room and secretly vaping in a hotel room! In neither case does the owner allow it. In neither case do you own the room. In both cases someone else will sleep in the room after you.

I thought the same @Inextremis. there are so many different vape flavours I can’t really square people saying they always know and they hate them all. There are plenty of flavours that aren’t sweet 🤷‍♀️

They were at a false alarm….and you know this was caused by a vape? Really?
False alarms happen all the time. Decades ago, way before vapes were even thought of, I had to leg it out of the shower, suds still in my hair, wrapped in a towel, for a false alarm in a hotel in wales. It happens.

I never said it was caused by a vape. A false alarm is just that, something the fire brigade are called to where they weren’t needed. If someone vaping sets off any sensors, then that will be the result of that persons actions. Ignore the sensors don’t/what about spray deodorants etc. Hotels ask for a reason for people not to vape.

ThisOldThang · 15/12/2024 22:32

I recently stayed in a Premier Inn and vaped in the room. No problems.

I also stayed in a foreign hotel and vaped in the room. No problems.

Unless she's stood on the bed directly vaping into the smoke alarm, she's not going to have any problems.

The smoke alarms need to be able to cope with large quantities of water vapour from a shower that might be left running for 45+ minutes. I think it's highly unlikely that average vape is going to set it off.

As for a lingering smell, I vape menthol so the lingering smell would be 'toothpaste' - hardly a problem in a hotel room.

snowlady4 · 15/12/2024 22:33

Vapers (not all, I know,) do generally seem to think that the no smoking/no vaping rules don't apply to them. I see people vaping everywhere!- pubs, hospitals, shops, airports, hairdressers.. everywhere! I think its so rude and entitled.
But, you can't stop your adult daughter or tell her off. But you can tell her what you think

Oh good god, now we're talking about fire engines coming out over someone vaping and it sets off the alarm, it doesn't happen, stop being so silly. When I vape in hotel I'm not near a fire alarm and the amount that comes out certainly wouldn't trigger it, sure I vape on the house and guess what, alarm never ever went off, nor would I expect it to, silly comparsion

2chocolateoranges · 15/12/2024 22:38

Was away for a few nights in a hotel last winter and due to some selfish individual who thought it was a great idea to vape in the room, the fire alarm went off and we were all evacuated from our hotel rooms at 4am!

not impressed that someone couldn’t follow rules and 4am in winter in Scotland isn’t pleasant!

If I'm staying in someone's house amd they don't like vaping I wouldn't vape, no comparison, also I reckon you've stayed in many a hotel room where people have vape and you don't know, I'd say all sorts happen in hotel rooms, vaping is a minor one 🤣

So all the posters saying they’ve had to evacuate a hotel are lying then. The hotels put the rule in place for a reason and people should respect.

WatchOutForBabyHaggis · 15/12/2024 22:58

Yep.

And to all those posters, come on now.

You know you're lying. We, the evil vapers, know you're lying. Even those that don't vape but don't hate it enough to go to the trouble of lying themselves probably suspect you're lying.

So we all know which makes it a bit of a pointless effort 😆

fivebyfivebuffy · 15/12/2024 23:41

Inextremis · 15/12/2024 19:51

I vape, but I don't vape in hotel rooms - mainly because I worry about setting the alarm off. The thing I do not understand here (and I am not defending vaping where it's not allowed), is posters referring to 'the' smell of vapes. In my experience there is no singular smell - I have vapes (I mix my own liquid) that smell of coffee, or chocolate, or strawberries - and many other flavours/scents. If I were to walk into a hotel room and get a whiff of coffee, I wouldn't think 'vape' - so what is this smell that people experience and dislike so much? I admit to not liking peach smells much, but I can't imagine ever complaining that my hotel room smells a bit peachy...

No idea
I vape in my own home and once I'm not vaping there is no "vape" smell
My dad hates vaping but tolerates me as I quit a 40 a day habit with it, he would tell me if he can smell it in my house

I use a custard one and given I'm wearing ginger biscuit perfume you would be pushed to tell what's me and what's the vape most days!

VWT5 · 16/12/2024 00:22

Please get her to stop - writing this as someone who had to evacuate from the 10th floor of a Premier Inn, down 20 flights of stairs, at speed, with a knee replacement, whilst supporting a partner with cardiac issues - because someone had set off the fire alarm doing similar.

Also currently staying in a hotel with a clear policy - 200 euro fine if caught smoking or vaping in the room, on the balcony, or on hotel premises…

I can assure you that it does happen. We were standing out in the freezing cold at 4am. Hotel sensors are extremely sensitive! The fire staff and hotel management were able to pin point the room that set it off and the person admitted to vaping which causes the sensor to go off!

so stop being a dick and don’t Vape in hotel rooms.

The point is that they all leave a sickly artificial smell. Never mind the plastic waste of the disposables.
