To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:24

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

lol at capers thinking we cannot smell it. It’s a hideous artificial smell.

Well, considering vapers who do vape in hotel rooms are unlikely to stop doing so...I suppose the (unusually high number of) posters who can smell the vape of previous room occupants had better suck it up and get used to it.

Either that or just keep moaning. It makes no odds though really 😂

She’s 19 not 14. She knows your views, it’s up to her 🤷🏼‍♀️

Do alarms go off in people's houses all the time if a person vapes all day while WFH 😊

I'm not bothered by vaping although I don't myself. It's just another of those things along with traffic fumes, perfumes, farts, food smells and so on that are everywhere.

Smoke/fire alarms detect ahem.... smoke and fire. Boiling a kettle or having a shower produces steam vapour, same as the vapour emitted from vape products.

Are there special "vape" alarms now that detect vapour or what? I think the signs saying vapes will set off alarms are just a deterrant, and if you think about it logically, it can't happen purely with vapour. And the powers that be know this too.

People are so sanctimonious and judgemental!
I personally have never known a vape trigger a fire alarm. Maybe the large, belching out clouds of vapour ones would but not a standard small vape.
Nor do standard, small vapes leave a detectable smell behind.
She's alone in the room so not affecting anyone else.
So - I'd be fine with it.
She didn't have to tell you - you'd have been none the wiser.
She's honest and upfront ... and vaping ... not mainlining heroin.
There are worse things I can assure you.

This. You can’t smell most vapes, they don’t set off fire alarms, and many, many people do it in hotel rooms. 👍

I have yet to come across a vspe that didn't reek.
Vapers are noseblind.

She is an entitled little miss, isn't she.

Msrachel · 16/12/2024 10:35

I don’t vape, so not nose blind.

My friends do vape elf bars sometimes, I can’t smell it once they’ve put it away, literally 2 minutes after the Vapor has dissipated, the smell of apple or whatever is completely gone. I honestly can’t understand how people are saying they can smell it in hotel rooms!

She shouldn’t be vaping in a hotel room purely because it’s the rules.

It won’t set off a fire alarm if there’s a kettle in the room, the amount of vapour from an elfbar is less than steam from a boiled kettle. I’ve never heard of a fire alarm being set off by a vape in real life, see it often on MN though, take from that what you will.

Would people get this angry if people had on those steam diffusers with essential oils in hotel rooms? They aren’t banned, but produce more Vapor and more smell. Although I have one of those, and I can’t smell it once it’s been turned off.

I used to vape a long time ago (like 5+ years ago). It was a pen type vape. Looked like a cigarette. Not one of those big machine types. It wasn’t flavoured with anything. I tried to flavoured ones and they made me feel ill. Mine was just a nicotine vape. I vaped in my house all the time. I asked many people who came round if they could tell. Not one person could. There was absolutely no smell from it. Even when I vaped around others they all said they couldn’t even tell. I’m not nose blind at all. I can and could smell those sickly sweet vapes and I couldn’t never have used those. But even now if I get a whiff of one, I may think it’s a bit gross, but it’s gone pretty much instantly. I’ve never noticed the smell of them lingering anywhere or on anyone.

i also used to vape in hotel rooms. Hell I’m old enough to remember covering the fire alarm with a sock and smoking. I have no problem with others vaping in hotel rooms now even though I’ve long stopped.

You are obviously either exaggerating or have major olfactory sensitivities, but no I don't care if you have to smell watermelon briefly. I don't care if you can smell my perfume or my shampoo either. Hell, I even fart sometimes and I wouldn't cry myself to sleep if you smelled that.

The very idea that I would stop vaping, when I can already see huge health benefits and it might very well stop me from being destined to have cancer, because you might have to smell watermelon occasionally is laughable. Get over yourself.

Most people do use the stinky artificially flavoured ones these days - anyone who thinks they don't reek is deluded.

Havalona · 16/12/2024 10:51

Can't wait for the smell of boiled brussels sprouts soon! All over the house, a stinky vape would be most welcome at that point.

Yes I would be angry with people using steam diffusers in a place with a policy banning them.

It's so disrespectful and entitled. The rules apply to everyone, no one is a special case. I think it's pathetic that people can't make the effort to just go outside.

Too lazy...stop thinking about it and use your anger at worst injustices in the world, rather than people secretly vaping in a hotel that isn't harming anyone barr ourselves xx

Bonsaitree7 · 16/12/2024 21:38

Let's be real, who on earth would bother taking the lift to go multiple floors downstairs in order to stand outside in the freezing cold for a mere few puffs? I bet most people who vape do so inside the room and nobody ever hears about it because it doesn't set the alarms off. This wouldn't bother me.

ELMhouse · 16/12/2024 21:45

Rainbow1901 · 15/12/2024 10:03

How childish is she being? Taking up vaping when shes never smoked smacks of keeping up with her mates at the local club!! Vaping in her hotel room when they specifically request patrons not to do so is someone who thinks she can get away with it (like a child) so if she triggers the alarm she can pay the fine and deal with the unpleasantness of turfing every person out of the hotel because she was so ridiculous. Then she might begin to understand how to be an adult!!

Just to play devils advocate Isn’t that how most people started smoking in the past, at some point you have to have done one without the other!
